TCU quarterback Chandler Morris has a sprained left knee and will miss the next game for the Horned Frogs. Chandler got hurt late in the third quarter of TCU's season-opening 38-13 win at Colorado on Friday night. A defender landed on Chandler's leg at t he end of a quarterback keeper. Coach Sonny Dykes said Monday that Chandler won't play in the home opener Saturday night against FCS team Tarleton. The quarterback will be week to week after that. The Horned Frogs have an open date after the Tarlet on game, then play at SMU on Sept. 24. They open Big 12 play Oct. 1 at home against ninth-ranked Oklahoma, the school Morris transferred from before the 2021 season. In the opener at Colorado, TCU went with Morris as the starter over Max Duggan, the four th-year player who has 29 career starts for the Horned Frogs. Morris completed 13 of 20 passes for 111 yards, and ran four times for 18 yards against the Buffaloes before getting hurt. Duggan was 2-of-3 passing for 27 yards after that. - AP College Footb all

Through the first seven practices of fall camp, TCU has stuck to its process of rotating quarterbacks with the first-team offense everyday. That changed Wednesday when Chandler Morris took snaps with the first-team offense in back-to-back days. Morris ha s also been the primary first-team quarterback in the installation part of practice that occurs before warmups. Head coach Sonny Dykes said he hoped to see some separation this week between Morris and senior quarterback Max Duggan. The decision to let Mo rris take all of the first-team reps in the open media portion seems like a significant development as the Horned Frogs get deeper into fall camp.Morris capped the first-team series with a nice completion to tight end Geor'Quarius Spivey near the endzone. Dykes downplayed the decision to let Morris lead the first-team offense in consecutive days. "I don't think so," Dykes said when asked if it was an indication he was close to making a decision. "I wasn't even aware, I think it's just we're rolli ng through the stuff and getting guys reps. I think we'll have to start to narrow some stuff down pretty quickly. I don't think that's any indication of anything." - Fort Worth Star

After starring at Highland Park High School and then transferring from Oklahoma, Morris was the backup before starting two games late in the season when Duggan was hurt. Morris flashed major upside, throwing for 461 yards and accounting for 531 yards tot al offense in a 30-28 upset of Baylor. Dykes said the two quarterbacks should have a decent idea of where they stand based on the practice reps this spring. He's not ready to anoint a starter just yet. "For us, the quicker we can get it figured out, the better because we can tailor the offense to fit their skill set," Dykes said. "We're just not quite there yet." Dykes admitted that he's always been a believer in the coaching axiom that if you have two starting quarterbacks, you don't have any.He also knows things can change quickly. When he was head coach at Cal, future NFL first-round pick Jared Goff went from fourth-string to a starter in his freshman season. The spring game is another chance, Dykes said, for his quarterbacks to make an impre ssion going into summer, a valuable opportunity to take the next step. "That's the biggest thing that you want at that position, you want consistency," Dykes said. "You've got to have a guy who can go out and execute your offense at a high level game in, game out. It doesn't have to be the biggest, it doesn't have to be the strongest, doesn't have to have the biggest arm. - Dallas Morning News

Gary Patterson wasn't on the sideline at a TCU game for the first time since 1997. The former Horned Frogs coach was watching from somewhere, and feeling proud. Chandler Morris threw for 461 yards and two touchdowns in his first start for TCU and the Fro gs beat No. 14 Baylor 30-28 on Saturday, six days after Patterson and the school mutually agreed to immediately part ways before completing his 21st season as head coach. "It was huge. I mean, I don't know a team more deserving just everything we've been through this week obviously with Coach P, and we were fighting for him," Morris said. "I mean, we deserved it. And I truly believe that." TCU (4-5, 2-4 Big 12) ended a three-game losing streak, and had lost five of its six previous games. The Frogs are now 22-22 since the start of 2018.Baylor (7-2, 4-2, No. 12 CFP), which had its three-game winning streak snapped, was driving and past midfield after the Frogs missed a field goal attempt when linebacker Shadrach Banks intercepted a pass thrown by Gerry Bohanon with 1:03 left. "Yesssssssssssssssss! Go Frogs!," Patterson tweeted after the game. He showed up at practice this week, but said he wouldn't attend the game. Bohanon finished 14-of-20 passing for 214 yards with three TDs and two intercepti ons, and Abram Smith ran for 125 yards to go over 1,000 yards this season for Baylor. Tyquan Thornton had five catches for 121 yards and two TDs. - TCU/AP College Football

Oklahoma has released Chandler Morris from his national letter of intent. Finally. OU coach Lincoln Riley informed Morris on Friday that OU would release Morris from his NLI, a source confirmed. OU had refused to release Morris from his NLI much of this offseason, creating a stir nationally. Riley talked about his belief that student athletes should not be able to transfer within conference without consequence. Those comments came before the Big 12 agreed to waive its intraconference rules requiring pla yers to sit out one season earlier this week. The NCAA also adopted rules that will allow student athletes the opportunity to transfer one time without penalty. OU and Riley relented after the new policies were announced. Morris is expected to compete fo r the backup job behind starting quarterback Max Duggan this season. - Fort Worth Star

Former Oklahoma quarterback Chandler Morris transferred to TCU following his freshman season but has yet to be released by OU. TCU head coach Gary Patterson was asked of Morris' status earlier this week, which currently won't allow him to be eligible for the 2021 season. OU coach Lincoln Riley addressed his program's decision, which he noted had nothing specifically to do with Morris but rather a view his staff holds when players transfers to other Big 12 schools. "This particular situation for us is ab out something that we believe in," Riley said. "Myself, the leadership here at OU, we think it's unhealthy for college football to encourage intraconference transfers."Riley said he isn't against student-athletes transferring to programs outside o f their current conference and becoming eligible right away. He noted the Sooners immediately released freshman tight end Jalin Conyers, who transferred to Arizona State this offseason. "I do think the intraconference can complicate things and the world of coaches understand the big picture and understand that's gonna bring along a lot of negatives that I just don't know that we want in this game," Riley said. - Norman Transcript

Oklahoma has not released former quarterback Chandler Morris from his national letter of intent. Morris entered the NCAA's transfer portal after spending his true freshman season with the Sooners in 2020 and opted to join the Frogs a few days later. At t he time, nobody knew if Morris would be eligible to play this fall. That hasn't changed in two-plus months since he arrived in Fort Worth. "We don't know yet on Chandler," Patterson said on Monday. "It looks like rules are going to change here real quick ly. He still hasn't been released by Oklahoma." There's multiple steps in the process for Morris to gain eligibility next fall, starting with OU releasing Morris from his national letter of intent because Morris is in his first year. If the Sooners do th at, then TCU can pursue an immediate eligibility waiver for Morris from the NCAA. The caveat to the waiver is whether the NCAA will adopt a policy allowing one-time transfers. If it does, TCU and Morris would not need to go through the waiver process. - Fort Worth Star

TCU football added some competition and depth to its quarterback room on Sunday. Oklahoma transfer Chandler Morris announced his intentions to join TCU in a social media post. Morris is the son of former SMU and Arkansas coach Chad Morris. It's to be det ermined if Morris will be eligible to play next fall. There's multiple steps in the process that will make that determination, starting with Oklahoma releasing Morris from his national letter of intent because Morris is in his first year. The NCAA is als o scheduled to vote on whether to allow one-time transfers on Jan. 11 and, after that, the Big 12 will decide on how to handle intra-conference transfers. - Fort Worth Star-Telegram
