Four years ago, CorMontae Hamilton took a gamble with Ohio State football. The former Whitehaven High School standout took a 24-hour bus ride to a camp in Columbus hoping for a scholarship. Back then, he said, playing at Memphis wasn't an option. He got the scholarship and played three seasons with the Buckeyes. Now, Hamilton is taking another risk returning home for a fresh start and more playing time. "I just wanted to go somewhere else," Hamilton said of his college recruitment. "But being away and s eeing the progress, being from Memphis, it makes you want to be on this team just so we can continue the uprise. Hometown kids come here to make it even better." Hamilton, who played 13 games at Ohio State, has turned heads since transferring after the s pring.Coach Ryan Silverfield singled him out as a standout from the team's first preseason scrimmage, and defensive line coach Kyle Pope raved about his work ethic from summer workouts. Of course, it helps he knew the defense a bit. Hamilton went to Ohio State as a tight end before switching to defense and playing his final season under defensive coordinator Matt Barnes, now with the Tigers Barnes knew Hamilton would be an asset after seeing his intensity in learning a new position at Ohio State. "He is a man on a mission. It was only a year or so that he got to spend on the defensive line, so it was a learning curve," Barnes said. "It was Mars for him, at first, but even when didn't know where to line up and what to do, his effort to the ball w as unmatched." - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Memphis added another transfer Monday with a local connection in former Ohio State defensive end CorMontae Hamilton. Hamilton, who announced his decision on Twitter, was a former three-star recruit as a tight end at Whitehaven High School. He signed with Ohio State in 2019 after earning a scholarship following a solo Greyhound bus trip from Memphis to attend a Buckeyes football camp in June 2018. Per Hamilton's post, he has three years of eligibility remaining and will be a junior this season. He appear ed in 13 games over two seasons and entered the transfer portal in February. He's also the second defensive linemen the Tigers added after the spring game. Former Sam Houston lineman Kamren Washington, the reigning WAC Freshman of the Year, committed on Sunday. - Memphis Commercial Appeal
