 Gavin Bartholomew, Pittsburgh, Player News

As a second-team freshman tight end All-American in 2021, Pitt's Gavin Bartholomew already has his fair share of accolades going into his sophomore season. According to Panthers coach Pat Narduzzi, Bartholomew added another honor to his resume during a team gathering on Thursday night. "Gavin won the cornhole championship last night, so I saw he kicked the heck out of Matt Altzman and Nick Patti. Him and Dylan Bennett," Narduzzi said before Pitt's Friday morning practice. "But on the field, he's done a great job." He may have a knack for cornhole, but Bartholomew's specialty lies in his soft hands and smooth route-running ability as a 6-foot-5, 255-pound tight end. Bartholomew caught 28 passes for 326 yards and four touchdowns as a freshman while splitting time with the since-graduated Lucas Krull, who signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent.

Now viewed as the leader of a deep position group that features a pair of transfers in Karter Johnson (TCU, Butler Community College) and Dylan Deveney (Georgia Tech) as well as redshirt junior Kyi Wright, Bartholomew has had no choice but to grow up fast. He seems to be embracing his new role so far, even sporting a nifty mustache for preseason camp. "I watched Lucas [Krull[ very diligently. Everything he did, everything he taught me - I'm just trying to transfer that over to the guys we have now," Bartholomew said. "You've got to bring the juice and the energy and get the guys going." - Pittsburgh Post Gazette

2022 PRESEASON JOHN MACKEY AWARD WATCH LIST: GAVIN BARTHOLOMEW, PITTSBURGH,...Bartholomew (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue Mountain) went from unheralded recruit to impact true freshman last season in helping the Panthers win the 2021 ACC title. Forming an extremely productive one-two punch with Pitt veteran presence Lucas Krull, now with the New Orleans Saints, Bartholomew became one of Kenny Pickett's favorite targets as the season progressed, especially in third down and red zone situations. Bartholomew played in all 14 games during his debut season for the Panthers, compiling 28 catches for 326 yards (11.6 avg.) and four touchdowns. - Pittsburgh Football

The ACC's divisional structure is about to be a thing of the past. The conference announced Tuesday that it will scrap its current model of two seven-team divisions for football in favor of a single-division format beginning in 2023. Under the new rules, each team will face three opponents annually for the next four seasons. For Pitt, those teams will be former Big East rivals Syracuse, Virginia Tech and Boston College. The Panthers' other five conference opponents each year will rotate between the league's 10 remaining teams.

For example, they will see Florida State, Louisville, North Carolina, Duke and Wake Forest in 2023. Then N.C. State, Virginia, Georgia Tech, Miami and North Carolina in 2024. The result will be more variety of opponents on the conference slate, with each team facing each other team in the conference twice in the next four campaigns. At the end each season, the teams with the two highest conference winning percentages will meet in the conference title game. The format will be in place until at least the end of the 2026 season, the end of the four-year cycle. However, it will not affect the 2022 schedule, which will be the last played under the two-division format. - Pittsburgh Post Gazette
