Shedeur Sanders threw for 445 yards and four touchdowns - three to Travis Hunter - and Colorado began Year 2 under Deion Sanders by holding off FCS power North Dakota State 31-26 on Thursday night. A 10 1/2-point favorite, the Buffaloes couldn't shake a pesky Bison team that scored with 2:19 remaining to make things interesting. Shedeur Sanders looked as if he sealed the season-opening victory when he scrambled around and heaved a ball downfield on third-and-8 that drew a pass interference call. It gave the Buffaloes a first down with 1:41 remaining and North Dakota State had just one timeout left. But Colorado chose to pass on first down, which ultimately left time on the clock after Colorado punted. North Dakota State got the ball back with 31 second s remaining. Cam Miller launched a pass from his own 47 as time expired that was caught by Tyler Terhark 4 yards short of the end zone. The methodical play of the Bison in the first half helped keep Heisman Trophy hopeful Sanders and the Colorado offense on the sideline. But once Sanders got out there, he went to work.Jimmy Horn Jr. had seven catches for 198 yards and a score while Hunter hauled in seven passes for 132 yards. His acrobatic, 3-yard TD with a defensive back draped all over him gave Colorado a 31-20 lead with 7:57 left. He celebrated by spinning the ball and going into a dance. Hunter still had that much energy despite playing all night at cornerback, too. Like Sanders, Hunter's mentioned in Heisman conversation. When asked by reporters for a fair quarterback comp for incoming CU quarterback Shedeur Sanders, the new QB1 and son of first-year coach Deion Sanders, Buffs wide receivers coach Brett Bartolone went long. And Strong. As in, former Nevada great Carson St rong. "As far as arm talent goes (the younger Sanders) is as good as I've seen at this level," Bartolone said during a meet-the-assistants news conference for Coach Prime's new hires this past Thursday, the staff's first engagement with Colorado media. " I've been around guys (such as) Carson Strong, who was a two-time (first-team) Mountain West player at Nevada. And I mean, (Strong) could touch anywhere on the field (with a ball) … "(Sanders) understands what defenses are trying to do to him. You know , as a quarterback, he has a very, very high IQ level, he really does." With Sanders, Buffs fans would happily take the second coming of Cam Ward, especially as their backstories share more than a few parallels.Like the younger Sanders, Ward is a talented Texan who transferred from an FCS power (Incarnate Word) to the Pac-12 (Washington State), only his move was between the 2021 and '22 seasons. And like Sanders now, there were questions as to whether the latter would have the same success at Waz zu as he did against lower-level competition. The short version? Ward delivered. After throwing for 47 scores and 4,678 yards at the FCS level in 2021, the young quarterback had 3,231 yards through the air with 23 TD passes during his first season with t he Cougars last fall, helping steer Wazzu to a win at Wisconsin, a 7-6 record and a berth in the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl. Coming off a 1-11 season, Buffs fans would savor seven wins and a postseason berth this fall. "Shedeur is good. He's been very good," B randon Huffman, 247Sports.com national recruiting analyst, told The Post recently. "Sure, it will be a jump, like Cam Ward's was from Incarnate Word to Washington State. "The difference (between Sanders and former Michigan and UNC Bears QB Dylan McCaffre y is that) McCaffrey was pretty average in college and didn't 'wow' you, even in high school - at major events, he struggled and saw his stock plunge. Shedeur Sanders had yet to play his final game at Jackson State before Fox Sports in December labeled him as a favorite to win the 2023 Heisman Trophy for Colorado. Throwing that type of hype on Sanders right away might be a bit much, but the fact that C U has a quarterback being talked about nationally is rare and it's a big deal for the Pac-12 Conference. "The conference will have the greatest collection of quarterbacks going into the season, as far as athletes ready to make sure their universities are in contention," Merton Hanks, the Pac-12's senior associate commissioner for football operations, said to BuffZone in a recent interview.Without having played a snap at the FBS level, Sanders may not be at the top of that list yet, but he's one o f the most intriguing quarterbacks in the country going into next season. In two seasons at Jackson State, Sanders threw for 6,963 yards, 70 touchdowns and only 14 interceptions. He added nine rushing touchdowns, including six this past season. In 2022, he ranked third in the FCS in passing touchdowns (40) and fourth in passing yards (3,732) and completion percentage (70.6%). "I'm looking forward to seeing Shedeur against the Pac-12 defenses," Hanks said. "That's going to be something that I'll be certa inly paying close attention to." - Daily Camera

Deion Sanders, known as "Prime Time" during his Hall of Fame playing career and has since transitioned into "Coach Prime," has been named the 28th full-time head football coach at the University of Colorado, athletic director Rick George announced Saturd ay evening. Sanders, 55, joins the CU program from Jackson State University (Jackson, Miss.), where in three seasons the Tigers compiled a 27-5 record and won back-to-back Southwestern Athletic Conference championships competing on the Football Champions hip Subdivision (FCS) level; that mark includes a 12-0 record this season.Jackson State defeated Southern, 43-24, in the SWAC title game on Saturday. "There were a number of highly qualified and impressive candidates interested in becoming the nex t head football coach at Colorado, but none of them had the pedigree, the knowledge and the ability to connect with student-athletes like Deion Sanders," George said. "Not only will Coach Prime energize our fanbase, I'm confident that he will lead our pr ogram back to national prominence while leading a team of high quality and high character." Shedeur Sanders threw for four touchdowns, including two on three first-quarter turnovers, staking Jackson State to a big early lead on the way to routing Southern 43-24 in Saturday's Southwest Athletic Conference championship that was possibly Deion San ders' final game as Tigers coach. Reports swirled before the game that Sanders would announce his departure from the FCS program after three seasons to become head coach at Colorado. Sanders acknowledged an offer from the school earlier this week and add ed that he had talked to other FBS programs about vacancies. Colorado's board of regents called a special meeting for Sunday but hasn't commented on any candidates taking over the Buffaloes. JSU (12-0) quashed any questions about Sanders' future being a distraction by completing the first unbeaten regular season in school history and claiming its second consecutive SWAC championship. The Tigers' top-ranked defense set the tone by quickly pouncing on the Jaguars for three turnovers in eight plays in the first quarter.Shedeur Sanders, the Hall of Fame coach's son, and the Tigers easily converted the takeaways into a 26-0 lead after 15 minutes, a run boosted by Sy'veon Wilkerson's 1-yard TD run two plays after Herman Smith III's 37-yard interceptio n return. Two fumbles created chances for Sanders to hit Shane Hooks for TD passes of 14 and 40 yards and two-point conversions to Kevin Coleman Jr. Sanders' 14-yard TD pass to Coleman made it 33-7 at halftime, but Southern (7-5) didn't quit and even got within 36-24 late in the in third quarter on Glendon McDaniel's 42-yard TD run. Sanders, the SWAC's offensive player of the year, completed 31 of 44 passes for 305 yards. Hooks caught five passes for 98 yards and Wilkerson rushed 15 times for 61 yards. McDaniel was 15 of 34 passing for 220 yards and a TD for Southern. Shedeur Sanders had four touchdown passes and undefeated Jackson State beat Alabama A&M 27-13 on Saturday at the Gulf Coast Challenge to earn the Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern Division berth to the league championship game for the second strai ght season. The Tigers (10-0, 7-0), ranked fifth in the FCS coaches poll, will host the conference championship game on Dec. 3. They play at Alcorn State in their regular-season finale next Saturday.The Bulldogs (3-7, 3-4) had a 10-7 lead after th e first quarter before Sanders threw touchdown passes of 19 yards to D.J. Stevens and 35 yards to Shane Hooks for a 21-10 halftime lead. Shedeur Sanders handled prime time just fine, leading Jackson State to a 35-0 victory over Southern on Saturday for its best start in more than 40 years. The son of "Prime Time" Deion Sanders, now known as Coach Prime of Jackson State and the reason Coll ege GameDay was in town, ran for two scores and threw for another to lead the Tigers to a weather-delayed win. After a scoreless first quarter, Shedeur Sanders took control in the second quarter with three scores for the Tigers (8-0, 5-0 Southwestern Ath letic Conference). He connected with Sy'veon Wilkerson for a 3-yard touchdown to cap an 18-play, 80-yard drive. Then Sanders ran the final 42 yards of a quick three-play 71-yard drive and three seconds before halftime, Sanders scored on a 12-yard burst t hen added a two-point conversion pass. Wilkerson scored on a 26-yard run for the only score in the third quarter and then the game was delayed by more than an hour because of weather. Jackson State coach Deion Sanders said Thursday that his team is not yet ready to play a team like Alabama. Sanders was asked by WVTM13 about Tide coach Nick Saban saying Tuesday that he would "very much be in favor" of scheduling HBCUs, including those in-state. "He's not gonna play us right now," Sanders said at SWAC media day in Birmingham. "We're not ready to that. We're not into sacrificing our kids to get a check. He got to give me another year." Alabama has not yet announced an FCS opponent for i ts 2023 season. It will play Austin Peay from that level of competition this November.Alabama does not have a history of playing historically-Black colleges and universities, prompting a question of Saban at SEC media days earlier this week on the topic. Sanders sees size as the roadblock to his team being able to compete in such a game. "I got to beef up in the front," he said. "The difference in Power 5s and HBCUs right now is those big guys in the middle. It's not the quarterbacks, it's not th e receivers and DBs or the skill positions. It's those big dogs in the middle. The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced its 2022 Preseason All-SWAC Football selections and Predicted Order of Finish on Thursday during SWAC Football Media Day at the Sheraton Hotel in Downtown Birmingham. The Preseason All-SWAC teams, Individual Winners, and Predicted Order of Finish was voted on by the league's head coaches and sports information directors. Jackson State's Shedeur Sanders was named Preseason Offensive Player of the Year while Florida A&M's Isaiah Land was tabbed Preseason Defe nsive Player of the Year.The league's 2022 Predicted Order of Finish was also announced as Jackson State (116) was selected to finish in first place in the SWAC Eastern Division. Florida A&M (108), Alabama A&M (87), Alabama State (60), Bethune-Coo kman (56), and Mississippi Valley State (35) round out the East Division Preseason Poll rankings. Southern (111) was tabbed to finish in first place in the SWAC Western Division. Shedeur Sanders threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to Malachi Wideman to help Jackson State beat Southern on Saturday night to clinch a berth in the SWAC Championship Game and end a 9-game losing streak against the Jaguars. Jackson State (9-1, 7-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) forced a punt and took possession near midfield with 7:34 to play and trailing 17-7. Sanders completed five passes on a six-play drive that culminated when Wideman caught a 13-yard TD less than two minutes later and, af ter Southern (4-6, 3-4) went three-and-out, Sanders was sacked for a 12-yard loss and the Tigers were penalized for a false start and a delay of game before Wideman caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Sanders to make it 21-17 with 1:42 remaining. Jackson State - which clinched the East Division title, its first title since 2013 - closes the regular season at home against Alcorn State next Saturday and will host the SWAC Championship Game on Dec. 4. Shedeur Sanders threw a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown passes to Malachi Wideman and JD Martin ran 51 yards for a score as Jackson State broke a 21-21 third-quarter tie to earn a 41-21 win over Texas Southern Saturday to remain unbeaten in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Jacorey Howard carried just two times for three yards, but each run ended in the end zone and his two-yard run with 5:44 left in the third quarter pulled Texas Southern even at 21-21. Peytton Pickett finished with 104 yards on 15 carries to lead Jackson State and his 54-yard dash four minutes into the game gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead.Howard punched in from the 1 and Dominic Franklin scored from the 5 to put Texas Southern (2-6, 2-4) in front, 14-7 early in the second qua rter, but Jackson State rallied with a pair of touchdowns to lead 21-14 at intermission. Shedeur Sanders threw three touchdown passes, Al Young returned a fumble for a touchdown, and Jackson State held off Mississippi Valley State 28-19 on Saturday. In addition to Young's fumble recovery, the Jackson State defense compiled six sacks and four interceptions. Sanders completed 18 of 31 passes for 257 yards with two interceptions and was sacked twice. Jalani Eason's 23-yard touchdown pass to Datavio Porter gave MVSU a 12-7 lead early in the third quarter but Jackson State regained the lead on a 41-yard touchdown pass from Sanders to Malachi Wideman. Shedeur Sanders threw for three touchdowns and Jackson State held on downs inside its own 10-yard line in the final minute to hold off Division II Delta State 24-17 on Saturday. A 24-yard punt return by Robbie Evans set up Delta State at the 25-yard line with less than three minutes remaining, trailing 24-17. Junior Muratovic threw three consecutive incomplete passes before being sacked by James Houston and Cam'Ron Silmon on fourth-and-10 to seal it.
