Louisiana Tech football is at a crossroads with the quarterback position. Late in the first quarter, Parker McNeil went down. With less than a minute left in the game with a game-tying touchdown on the line, Matthew Downing went down. Landry Lyddy, a fre shman, stepped up and took the Bulldogs (2-5, 1-2 Conference-USA) into overtime but a failed two-point conversion cost them the game in a 42-41 heartbreaker. Louisiana Tech football coach Sonny Cumbie has a decision to make- who will start against Florid a International on Friday. "I'm excited about the challenge with whomever walks out there," Cumbie said. Unfortunately, Downing is out of the race with a season-ending a knee injury, Cumbie said.Prior the injury Downing had completed 12-of-24 pass ed for 159 yards, two TDs and one interception alongside 40 rushing yards. "It's a tough deal for (Downing), it's a tough deal personally, for the team and anybody who goes through and injury in football," Cumbie said. "I think when you care about your p layers, when you care about their wellbeing its a difficult deal." The typical starter at quarterback this season, McNeil, is being monitored daily to see if he is able to come back for Friday night. With Downing out for the season, sophomore Jack Turner rises into the conversation. Turner has yet to see game action this season. With Duggan out, Downing has emerged as the team's top quarterback. Patterson has liked what he's seen from Downing working with the first team. Former offensive tackle David Bolisomi raved about Downing's "swagger." And Downing's high school coach at Al pharetta (Georgia) compared his playing style to Heisman Trophy winners Baker Mayfield and Johnny Manziel. "He's got the same type of game as those guys," said Jacob Nichols, the high school coach. "He can extend plays and make plays with his legs when n eeded. "Matthew's also one of the hardest working, most dedicated kids I've ever coached. He's not the guy who's going to blow you away with a measuring tape or stopwatch. He's just a ballplayer and gets the job done no matter what the circumstance." Downing is also driven to play at the highest level possible, despite the odds. Recruiting website 247Sports didn't even give him a ranking coming out of Alpharetta. It wasn't like Downing didn't impress in high school, either, starting since his sop homore season. As a senior, he threw for 2,659 yards with 24 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also rushed for 386 yards and three TDs in earning the Region 7, Class 6A offensive player of the year honors. Whether because of concerns over his size or his ability to transition to the next level, he was a lightly recruited prospect. But Downing walked on at Georgia and worked his way up the depth chart to third-string behind Jake Fromm and Justin Fields as a true freshman in 2018. - Fort Worth Star
