South Carolina starting quarterback Luke Doty needs surgery on his injured foot and will miss the rest of the season. Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer said Tuesday Doty would have the operation later this week and would not return until spring practice. Beam er said former graduate assistant coach Zeb Noland would start for South Carolina (4-3, 1-3 Southeastern Conference) this week at No. 17 Texas A&M (5-2, 2-2) on Saturday night. Doty is a 6-foot-1, 210-pound sophomore who missed the first two games this s eason due to the injury when someone stepped on his foot at practice in August. Doty came in for an injured Noland at No. 1 Georgia in week three, then started the next four games. With South Carolina trailing 20-14, Noland subbed in for Doty on the fina l drive and led a 75-yard touchdown drive in the Gamecocks 21-20 victory Saturday night. - AP College Football

South Carolina sophomore Luke Doty will get his first start of the season at quarterback. Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer said Tuesday that Doty would get the call at home against Kentucky on Saturday night. Doty hurt his foot in practice last month and mis sed the first two games of the season. However, he entered early in a 40-13 loss at No. 2 Georgia when starter Zeb Noland was hurt. Beamer said Doty had no lingering effects from the injury. Doty was on track to start for South Carolina (2-1, 0-1 Southea stern Conference) before his injury. Noland is the one-time graduate assistant who joined the team when Doty got hurt this summer. Noland started the first three games of the season, but left early against Georgia when his hand got stepped on. Beamer exp ected Noland would also be ready to go against Kentucky (3-0, 1-0) if called on. - AP College Football

South Carolina coach Shane Beamer said expected starting quarterback Luke Doty sprained his foot and could miss the team's season opener. Beamer said Saturday that Doty, the 6-foot-1, 210-pound second-year passer, got his foot accidently stepped on at pr actice Friday. Exams showed that the injury was not as bad as originally feared and that Doty was hopeful he could play in the team's first game against Eastern Illinois on Sept. 4. Doty started the final two games last season as the Gamecocks went 2-8. He completed 43 of 71 passes for 405 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Beamer said there was no reason to panic about the quarterback position as Doty will be day to day with the injury going forward. "Luke's in great spirits and is opti mistic he'll be able to play in the first game," Beamer said. "But if he's not, it'll be shortly after that." If Doty can't go, the Gamecocks will rely on St. Francis (Pennsylvania) transfer Jason Brown or freshman Colten Gauthier, neither who has taken a snap in a game for South Carolina. - AP College Football

He's stayed on his workouts, an average day at the operations building lasting from 5:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Even on break, as the coaching staff grabs some R and R after a thrilling but exhausting month of camps and recruiting, Luke Doty hasn't relaxed, call ing the South Carolina teammates who are scattered around Doty's native Myrtle Beach and inviting them to work out at Doug Shaw Stadium, where Doty started his journey to become the Gamecocks' starting quarterback. That's the work required to remain wher e he is: Clear-cut QB1 exiting spring practice. That's the want-to he's always shown, from getting a Division I offer as an eighth-grader to not being a full-time starter until his junior season at Myrtle Beach to being named the state's "Mr. Football" a s a senior."He's definitely more vocal now. Last year he was a younger person," said right tackle Dylan Wonnum, who saw Doty take over at QB at halftime of USC's third-to-last game last year. "I feel like he's getting more comfortable, which means you can get more vocal. I've seen a lot of improvement from Luke." Doty is doing all he can to be in tip-top shape once Aug. 5 comes and the Gamecocks report for preseason camp. The physical attributes are being tweaked and goaded toward the best they c an be every day of the summer. Yet playing quarterback is only part of it. Doty, the former Myrtle Beach High star, took the first snap in the first spring practice because he was the only one who had done it before. Beamer said not to draw any conclusions from that. Yet after the first four spring practices, Doty still was No. 1. And from what offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Marcus Satterfield said, that seems to be the norm now and going forward. Not that Satterfield wasn't complimentary of Gauthier, Brown and Jordan. He was. But Gauthier's a freshman, Jordan's a va luable guy but it's all been behind the scenes and Brown, while athletic and talented, is transitioning from a spread offense to a pro-style offense. Again, it's only been a week of spring ball but it seems to be Doty's job to lose."I knew he was an above-the-line passer, but I didn't know how natural he was. I'm really excited to continue to work on his fundamentals and creating the best him we could possibly do," Satterfield said. "But I'm really excited about how he's throwing the ball right n ow. Obviously, he's athletic and can run and make the plays with his legs, but it's really good to put him in situations where he's got to use his arm." Doty "debuted" last year as a wide receiver who would sometimes run routes and sometimes get behind c enter for a running play.
