Arizona State sophomore tight end Nolan Matthews has announced his plans to enter the transfer portal. Matthews, a 6-foot-4, 260-pounder from Frisco, Texas, played in 12 games last year as a true freshman, with six receptions for 36 yards and a touchdown , that scoring play coming against UCLA. He was one of only six Power Five true freshman tight ends to play 200-plus snaps. He played in ASU's 28-27 season-opening loss to USC at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Nov. 7 but did not record a catch. - Arizo na Republic

The Whataburger corporate office further apologized on Friday for an incident involving Arizona State football players being subjected to a racial slur by a customer earlier in the week. In a statement, the company said: "Whataburger is appalled by the i ncident that took place at our Tempe restaurant, where our ASU student customers were victims of horrible racial slurs from a drive-thru customer." "We apologize that these young men experienced this pain and have spoken with - and apologized to - each o f them, some of their families, the ASU athletic partnership staff, and others impacted. "We simply will not tolerate racism at our restaurants. Through our own investigation, Whataburger has reviewed the security camera footage. We have been contacted b y the families and 100 percent support their desire for justice. We are committed to working with authorities on this matter."The statement continued by recounting how the three ASU players - Jordan Clark, Nolan Matthews and T Lee - were on foot a nd not able to purchase food at midnight because the dining room was closed. They asked a woman in the drive-thru line to purchase food for them. She said she would not do so and subsequently complained about the players to an employee then, according to the players, called them "n------" several times before driving away. - Arizona Republic
