That whistling in the 35 mph wind was Joey Yellen whipping another pass to a University of Hawaii receiver at the Ching Complex's football field. Six months after transferring from Pittsburgh and four months after ceding the starting quarterback's job, Y ellen has impressed in the first four practices of the Rainbow Warriors' spring training. Head coach Timmy Chang has likened Yellen to Nick Rolovich, who rebounded from a difficult 2000 season to set several UH passing records in 2001."Rolo was on e of the best quarterbacks who played here," Chang said of his former teammate. "If Rolo had another two years, three years or so, imagine what he would have done with this offense. I see Joey in (Rolovich). It's his frame (6 feet 3, 215 pounds). It's hi s demeanor. It's his ability to throw the ball, understand where the ball needs to go on time. He's not going to wow you with his athleticism, but he's going to distribute the ball, and that's what reminds me the most of Rolo." Brayden Schager is atop th e six-quarterback depth chart this spring. But Chang, who will call the offensive plays this season, said there is talent - and competition - in the quarterback room. "Schager gets the No. 1 spot, but Joey's right there," Chang said. "He's competing. He' s throwing the ball right underneath the chin (of a receiver). He's understanding the standard of distributing the ball. I love where he's at. He's in a good place. He's calmer, confident, and he understands." - Honolulu Advertiser

The University of Hawaii football team is set to upgrade its offense with Monday's first of 15 spring practices. Last year's spring training, the first under head coach Timmy Chang, was intended to promote unity following a tumultuous end to the 2021 sea son. This year's aim is to fully implement the run-and-shoot offense that was prolific for 13 UH seasons through 2011 and found revived success in 2018 and 2019. The Warriors used a mashup of schemes last season. Chang and co-offensive coordinators Ian S hoemaker and Roman Sapolu will craft the game plan in meetings and practices each week during the season. But Chang, a record-setting, run-and-shoot quarterback at UH and Saint Louis School, will call the offensive plays during games.Brayden Schag er enters spring training as the No. 1 quarterback. When the Warriors began introducing elements of the run-and-shoot in last season's fifth game, Schager "started making some great throws," according to Chang. "He's gotten better. Schager throws the bal l hard. Schager knows the drops. He's been good." Chang said Joey Yellen, who transferred from Pittsburgh last summer, "reminds me of (Nick) Rolovich 100%." In 2020, Chang joined the Warriors as a freshman and Rolovich transferred from City College of Sa n Francisco. From an initial nine-quarterback field, Rolovich won the starting job. But after two uneven games, Rolovich was replaced by Chang. The next season, following an injury to Chang, Rolovich had a record-setting season. Against Miami (Ohio) and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, Rolovich threw for 500 yards and seven touchdowns. Similar to Rolovich, according to Chang, Yellen has "that intelligence. The ball comes out on time." - Honolulu Advertiser

The University of Hawaii at Manoa is moving forward to expand the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex that would increase its capacity to 17,000 fans. The plan is to have it ready for the 2023 football season. UH was able to expand what was once the pr actice field into a 9,300 stadium last year after the state abruptly shut down Aloha Stadium, leaving the Rainbow Warriors without a home field. Athletics Director David Matlin plans to ask the UH Board of Regents to approve a plan that would expand seat ing capacity to 17,000 fans. One of the main reasons is that UH runs the risk of not qualifying as an FBS or Division One program.UH cites the NCAA rule that stated, "Once every two years on a rolling basis, the institution shall average at least 15,000 in actual or paid attendance for all home football games." Construction will be done from January to August next year, so it should be finished in time for the next football season. Former Gov. Neil Abercrombie is all for it and said it should hav e been done sooner. "It's gonna cost more because we didn't do what we should've done in the first place. Of course, it's gonna cost more, inflation, whether we can get supplies and all the rest of that stuff," said Abercrombie. The total cost is $30 mil lion. UH said it will use money from unused existing funds. - Khon2.com

A new era of Hawaii football will officially be ushered in on Aug. 27 when the Rainbow Warriors take on the Commodores at Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex as Timmy Chang makes his head coaching debut. In the 31 days between the start of camp and the start of the season, Chang will make one of his first big decisions at the helm of the program: Picking a starting quarterback. With two-year starter Chevan Cordeiro now at San Jose State, the 'Bows have a void under center and have whittled the competi tion down to five: Brayden Schager, Cammon Cooper, Armani Edden, Jake Farrell and Joey Yellen.Yellen, the lone player in the group who didn't participate in spring ball, joined UH in the summer after transferring from Pittsburgh, where he spent th e 2021 season as a backup with first-round NFL Draft pick Kenny Pickett. "It's exciting. It's certainly different from some of the camps I've gone through in my past years but it's exciting," Yellen said. "I think we've got a good thing going in the righ t direction, just gotta keep putting some good days together and get ready for Vanderbilt." Despite the late start, Yellen remains squarely in the race, taking multiple reps with the first-team offense on Wednesday. "I'm confident. If you asked any quart erback here, they should say that, right? If you're not, what are you doing? You gotta be confident, you gotta feel like you're the right guy for the job, and I think everyone should feel that way," Yellen said. "I think there's always gonna be room for improvement on the first day, but I thought we have a lot of young guys around, I'm new, it was just a lot of new things for everybody. I think that kind of showed at some parts but I thought it was a good first day. I think we're headed in the right dir ection." - Khon2.com

In eight days, the University of Hawaii football team will open training camp with an open competition at quarterback. Head coach Timmy Chang and offensive coordinator Ian Shoemaker will wait until at least two weeks of practices before setting a depth c hart at the signal-calling position. The Rainbow Warriors are seeking a replacement for Chevan Cordeiro, a two-time captain who transferred to San Jose State after the 2021 season. The Warriors listed six quarterbacks on their tentative training camp ros ter: Brayden Schager, Cammon Cooper, Joey Yellen, Jake Farrell, Connor Apo and Armani Edden. Chad Owens Jr., whose father was a standout UH slotback who enjoyed a lengthy pro career, appears to be moving to receiver. As a true freshman in 2021, Sch ager was 2-1 as a starter in place of an injured Cordeiro. He directed the first series in the spring game in April. Cooper transferred from Washington State in January. Yellen joined the Warriors this summer after transferring from Pittsburgh, where he was the top understudy to Kenny Pickett, a 2022 NFL first-round pick. "Joey and Cam have a chance to compete (for the starter's job)," Chang said of the extended evaluation period. "We've got to give them that shot." - Honolulu Advertiser

The University of Hawaii football team's quarterback competition is heating up with the addition of a transfer from the University of Pittsburgh. "I'm very excited," said Joey Yellen, a former four-star prospect, of his commitment to the Rainbow Warriors on Monday. "I'm excited about the staff over there and the team we've got. I feel it's a good opportunity." Yellen was the backup to Kenny Pickett, who was the Pittsburgh Steelers' first-round draft pick last week.Yellen said there were several f actors in deciding to transfer, notably offensive coordinator Mark Whipple's move to Nebraska. Whipple recruited Yellen to Pitt in 2020. "I'm definitely thankful for Pittsburgh, and all the experiences they brought me," Yellen told the Honolulu Star-Adve rtiser. "There are only so many people who can say they played under a first-round draft pick for a couple years. Even though I didn't play, I wouldn't trade the experience there." Yellen joins Washington State transfer Cammon Cooper as UH quarterbacks w ho began their careers at Pac-12 schools. - Honolulu Advertiser

Less than 24 hours after Kenny Pickett was drafted by the Steelers and four weeks after Davis Beville entered the transfer portal, Pitt lost a third scholarship quarterback. Joey Yellen, who transferred to Pitt from Arizona State in 2020, also entered th e portal, according to multiple reports on Friday. Yellen will have three years of eligibility available but might have to sit out a season if he joins a Football Bowl Subdivision team due to the NCAA's transfer rules.Yellen's decision isn't neces sarily a surprise considering where he stacks up in Pitt's quarterback room. USC transfer Kedon Slovis and 2021 backup Nick Patti are competing to replace Pickett. Slovis came to Pitt with pedigree after performing at a high level with the Trojans in 201 9 and 2020. Meanwhile, Patti was the next quarterback up and started the Peach Bowl when Pickett opted out this past December. - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi likes to add a quarterback to his roster every year, and he received a verbal commitment for the class of 2023 on Saturday when Kenny Minchey announced his plans to enroll next year. Minchey (6-foot-3, 200 pounds) is a three-star prospect, according to Rivals.com. He threw for 3,280 yards and 32 touchdowns last season for Pope John Paul II High School in Hendersonville, Tenn. While approaching his senior season, he has 17 scholarship offers, including from Power 5 schools Michiga n State, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Virginia Tech and West Virginia. Minchey's commitment surfaced after Pitt lost quarterback Joey Yellen and Davis Beville to the NCAA transfer portal and Kenny Pickett to the NFL this offseason. The Panthers have only three scholarship quarterbacks on their roster, including Kedon Slovis and Nick Patti at the top of the depth chart and Nate Yarnell, a redshirt freshman from the class of 2021. - The Tribune-Review

Former ASU quarterback Joey Yellen got the start for Pittsburgh Saturday afternoon, subbing for injured starter Kenny Pickett. He completed 22 of 46 tries for 277 yards and one touchdown in a 31-19 loss to No. 13 Miami. Yellen served as backup to Jayden Daniels last season but played in only one game, that coming against USC when Daniels was injured. He transferred to January in search of more playing time. Adding a twist to his first start at his new school, it came against Miami, which is where Yelle n's former quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Rob Likens is now serving as wide receivers coach. ASU assistant coach Trey Anderson, who works with quarterbacks, told his players before they headed out to practice that their former teammate was going to be starting. Trent Bourguet, Jayden Daniels' backup, texted Yellen to wish him good luck and got a return text after the game. "We're all really happy for him," Bourguet said. - Arizona Republic
