Momentum. Drive times opportunity. Heart times hard work. Those are some of the staple phrases in Nebraska's national television spot. Such narration could also be used to describe Northwestern junior quarterback Ryan Hilinski's performance against the C ornhuskers on Saturday. "I was just excited to go out there and play with the guys because man, we've been through a lot this offseason and we're just excited to get out there and play football again," Hilinski said. "Show the people who the Wildcats are and they don't forget again." Hilinski, who didn't find out he was the starter until right before kickoff, was a man on a mission in Dublin. His offseason preparation and confidence both internally and in offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian's play book was evident early in the game. He started out a perfect 8-for-8 before an incomplete pass around three minutes into the second quarter. His next pass? A 41-yard touchdown throw to senior wideout Raymond Niro III. The highlight was a much-needed boos t for NU after opening the 75-yard drive down 14-3 and on the backfoot against the Cornhuskers. "At the end of the day it was (about) playing within myself, playing within the offense," Hilinski said of his early start. "Coach Bajakian called a great gam e. That opening script we had was great and made me feel really calm." - The Daily Northwestern

Ryan Hilinski threw for 313 yards and two touchdowns to help Northwestern rally for a 31-28 victory over Nebraska in Saturday's season opener in Ireland. Northwestern handed the Cornhuskers their seventh consecutive loss going back to last season and add ed more pressure on embattled coach Scott Frost, who took the blame for a failed onside kick that changed the momentum of the game in the third quarter. The Wildcats (1-0, 1-0 Big Ten) finished with 527 yards and gained a measure of revenge after their h umiliating 56-7 loss to the Huskers last October. Nebraska hasn't won since then.Nebraska (0-1, 0-1 Big Ten) was looking for a bounce-back season with a revamped offense following a 3-9 season, but the team and its many fans who made the trip are headed home bitterly disappointed. Quarterback Casey Thompson had a big game in his Huskers debut, throwing for 355 yards, but a fourth-quarter mistake was costly. Cameron Mitchell intercepted Thompson's pass and returned it almost 40 yards. Six plays la ter, Evan Hull ran it in from the 4 to give the Wildcats a 31-28 lead. Hull finished with 22 carries for 119 yards. Xander Mueller picked off a pass that bounced off receiver Wyatt Liewer's hands with 1:27 to play and the Wildcats sealed the win. - North western/AP College Football

Ryan Hilinski threw for 267 yards and two touchdown passes on Saturday afternoon to boost Northwestern to a 21-7 victory over Rutgers. Hilinski, making his third start since transferring from South Carolina, opened the scoring for the Wildcats (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) by capping off a 98-yard drive in the first quarter, hitting Malik Washington for a 64-yard touchdown pass. The completion - Hilinski's longest as a Wildcat - helped his team secure its first conference win of the season. "I think one of the big gest things is that we're continuing to have fun," Hilinski said. "This is a game we played when we were 5 years old. I personally play best when I'm having fun and just recognizing that this is a game we've been playing our whole lives." Washington plow ed through a downfield defender on his touchdown grab and finished with 84 receiving yards on five catches.Fellow wideout Stephon Robinson Jr. had 115 yards, taking pressure off a Wildcats rushing attack that struggled to get going throughout the day. Often a key to Northwestern's offensive approach, the ground game combined for just 135 yards on 48 attempts. "Really proud of the squad," Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said. "The way they bounced back this game and these last couple weeks. I th ought they put a ton of work in to get better fundamentally. We were able to carry our preparation over into the game." - Northwestern/AP College Football

South Carolina fans gave quarterback Ryan Hilinski even more love than a second string QB typically gets in his first start and the freshman with the inspiring backstory responded with a storybook debut. Hilinski completed 24 of 30 passes for 282 yards a nd two touchdowns and ran for another score leading the Gamecocks (1-1) to a 72-10 win over Charleston Southern on Saturday. The highly touted Hilinski earned the backup job in spring practice after enrolling early from high school and was elevated to st arter after senior Jake Bentley broke his foot in the last play of the opening loss to North Carolina. Bentley is out for at least several weeks. While South Carolina was recruiting Hilinski, his older brother Tyler Hilinski killed himself while pl aying quarterback for Washington State. The school promised to do whatever it could to help his family and their Hilinski's Hope foundation in Tyler's honor to help make the mental health of college athletes as important as their physical health. The cro wd chanted "Let's go Ryan!" during his first two drives. Hilinski's parents were in the stands and his mother, Kym, said during an in-game interview with the SEC Network that she caught herself cheering for Tyler as her younger son took the field for Sou th Carolina. - AP College Football
