John Emery Jr., LSU, Player News

Senior running back John Emery was absent from LSU's first practice of the spring Thursday morning. Emery, a former five-star recruit from St. Rose, returned for his fifth season this year instead of entering the NFL draft. Coach Brian Kelly said Emery h as to meet certain academic requirements before he can practice. Emery missed the entire 2021 season and the first two games last year because he was ruled academically ineligible, a decision the NCAA upheld after an appeal."John is focused strict ly right now on his academics," Kelly said. "He's got some marks that he has to hit from an academic standpoint before we talk about football with him. That was the deal with John and talking to his family. If his primary focus was academics and taking c are of his degree, then we would have a conversation about football." Emery wasn't the only running back missing from practice. Fifth-year graduate student Josh Williams and junior Armoni Goodwin did not appear during a 20-minute viewing period as they r ecover from injuries. Goodwin won't be able to practice until preseason camp. - Baton Rouge Advocate

LSU football running back John Emery Jr. is coming back to LSU for the 2023 season, according to On3 Sports. Emery had until Monday's deadline to enter his name into the 2023 NFL Draft. After sitting out the entire 2021 season and the first two games of 2022 with an academic suspension, Emery had 370 rushing yards on 76 attempts. He averaged 3.21 yards after contact while splitting carries with Josh Williams, Armoni Goodwin and Noah Cain. Emery returns to an LSU offense that is bringing back most of its key contributors in 2023. Starting quarterback Jayden Daniels is returning, along with wideouts Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr., tight end Mason Taylor and five of LSU's top six contributors on the offensive line. - The Daily Advertiser

Five returning players most likely to put together breakout seasons in 2022: John Emery Jr., senior running back,...The LSU rushing attack may have looked different last season had Emery been academically eligible. Multiple running backs will get carries this season, but Emery has already shown he can be a productive back in the SEC. In 2020, he ran 75 times for 378 and three touchdowns for an average of 5.0 yards per carry. Against Alabama, he ran seven times for 79 yards, including a 54-yard TD. He ra n for 103 yards and a TD against Vanderbilt. If Emery gets carries more consistently this season, it's easy to see him becoming the Tigers' most productive back. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Despite all the focus on quarterbacks, new coach Brian Kelly knows LSU must be committed to running the ball well to win the Southeastern Conference. He has a promising group, but his best runner is John Emery Jr. He had only four carries for 24 yards Sa turday, but Kelly said Emery was playing hurt because he knows he will be less than 100% during the season. "I was proud of him," Kelly said. - Baton Rouge Advocate

For LSU tailback John Emery Jr., it was virtually love at first sight when he met new offensive coordinator Jake Peetz last January. "He said I can be just like Christian McCaffrey," Emery said of the versatile Carolina Panthers running back who rushed f or 1,387 yards and caught 116 passes for 1,005 yards in a Pro Bowl season in 2019. A year later, he became the highest-paid running back in NFL history in 2020 with a four-year, $64 million contract. "Coach Peetz actually showed me clips of Christian as soon as he came in," Emery said. "And me seeing that, I just knew it was going to be a perfect fit," Emery said.Emery hopes to be a dual-threat like McCaffrey, who became just the third back in NFL history to gain more than 1,000 yards rushing an d receiving in 2019. "Coach Peetz says I kind of remind him of Christian McCaffrey," he said. So far, though, Emery's career is not close to that of McCaffrey, who set the NCAA record for most all-purpose yards in a season at Stanford with 3,864 in 2015. As a freshman reserve in 2019, Emery gained only 188 yards on 39 carries while catching six passes for 60 yards. In 2020, he started three games and gained 378 yards on 75 carries while catching 14 passes for 73 yards. - Lafayette Daily Advertiser

LSU's two returning leading rushers, Ty Davis-Price and John Emery, are both limited with injuries in spring football, head coach Ed Orgeron said Tuesday morning in a radio interview. Davis-Price, who led LSU with 446 yards rushing and three touchdowns i n 2020, has been hurt "for the most part" since spring football began last week, Orgeron told 104.5 ESPN's "Off the Bench," and they "haven't seen much out of him" although Orgeron didn't detail the injury. Orgeron said Emery, who had 378 yards rushing a nd three touchdowns in 2020, has been recovering from shoulder surgery. Emery has been wearing a gold noncontact jersey during practice and can't scrimmage. "He's coming back very well," Orgeron said. "He's doing everything we're asking him to do." - Bat on Rouge Advocate

Tyrion Davis-Price started instead against Vanderbilt, and John Emery became the feature back once he started to have the most success. Emery finished the game with 12 carries for 103 yards and a touchdown. The 5-foot-11, 215-pound sophomore's first 100- yard performance of his career, paired with three catches for 21 yards, showcased the talent LSU expected when they signed him as a five-star out of Destrehan High. "That's the John Emery we recruited," Orgeron said. "It took a little while for him to co me. And, just like any other freshman, everybody grows at their own pace. John's a tremendous young man. He's a confident young man right now." - Baton Rouge Advocate

The five-star tailback sophomore tailback was a non-factor his freshman season, lapped by Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Tyrion Davis-Price and Chris Curry. But with Curry sidelined, Emery came off the bench and ran impressively, breaking tackles and stutter-ste pping his way through a solid Vandy defense for 103 yards and a touchdown. Was it a breakout game for Emery? Certainly a breakthrough. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Will this guy breakout in 2020 like Edwards-Helaire did last season for the Tigers? The potential is there, for sure. Emery was a five-star recruit coming out of high school in 2019 and the highest-rated running back signed by LSU since Leonard Fournette in 2014. Even though his carries were limited as a true freshman last season, he managed to flash his immense potential, rushing for 196 yards and four touchdowns. The battle for the starting role between Emery and Tyrion Davis-Price, Edwards-Helaire's backup last season, should be epic. - Gainesville Sun
