Six of Alabama's past seven football seasons have stretched into the second week of January, making the task particularly difficult for any of its players wanting to also play basketball. Doing so would require shaking off the physical rigors of a 15-gam e football season and then jumping into an SEC basketball schedule, without the benefits of much practice time or experience in non-conference games. But five-star cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry and four-star cornerback Terrion Arnold both arrived at Alab ama last year with aspirations to play both sports, something that was welcomed by Nick Saban and men's basketball coach Nate Oats.Oats said McKinstry would have a spot on the team and he practiced with the team upon his arrival on campus in early 2021. But after turning his attention back to football in the fall, McKinstry did not join the hoops team after football season this past winter. Basketball does not appear to be in McKinstry's future. "When I first got here, I was thinking about playin g basketball," McKinstry explained Tuesday. "I actually did practice with the basketball team, but as of right now, I don't think I'll be playing basketball." - Birmingham News

Ever since college athletes were able to earn revenue from marketing deals beginning last month, one potential partnership has seemed too obvious not to happen. Alabama freshman cornerback Ga'Quincy McKinstry, who goes by the nickname of Kool-Aid on the team's official roster, seems to have finally teamed up with the beverage brand Kool-Aid. The Twitter and Instagram accounts of the beverage brand, which is owned by Kraft Heinz, were changed Wednesday to McKinstry's name. "In honor of our new partnershi p, we've swapped names with Kool-Aid McKinstry and given him the power of OH YEAH," both accounts' new biographies now read. McKinstry's account on Twitter is now "Kool-Aid Man" with the company's branding used on the page. "Honored to partner with Kool- Aid the Brand … I will be sharing the OH YEAH title with the Kool-Aid Man!," McKinstry's bio states. - Birmingham News

McKinstry may be too talented to keep off the field for a defense replacing first-round NFL draft pick Patrick Surtain II. "Kool-Aid" (he just struck an endorsement deal with the beverage maker) is 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds and will likely compete for earl y playing time with no real experienced starting cornerback listed opposite of Josh Jobe. He also practiced with the Southeastern Conference champion basketball team some last season after enrolling early and planned to play both sports. "He is what we t hought he was, but I thought he was more physical." defensive coordinator Pete Golding said. "I think with any freshmen that's very talented — and Kool Aid is no exception — is still the same thing of the consistency." - AP College Football

Alabama had the highest-rated recruiting classes in the history of 247Sports ranking recruiting classes. That said, the top few guys were offensive linemen -- important players but not ones who'll necessarily attract attention in the preseason unless som ething breaks down. McKinstry checked in as the No. 18 overall recruit on the 247Sports board coming from nearby Pinson. He has some of the flash reminiscent of a young Dre Kirkpatrick who came to Alabama as the No. 14 overall recruit in the 2009 class. McKinstry, named male national high school athlete of the year by USA Today, flashed some of his potential on A-Day with an interception. Freshmen have won starting jobs at cornerback including Patrick Surtain, fittingly a first-round pick in April whose spot could be in play this August. - Birmingham News

The Crimson Tide has options, and camp will likely help sort out who earns the most time. Of course, the type of coverage Alabama is in will dictate how many defensive backs are on the field, too. Some of the contenders who could see time in that second spot and/or playing time in general include, but are not limited to, Banks, Armour-Davis and McKinstry. He not only has maybe the best name on the roster, but McKinstry is also a five-star recruit who could play early for the Crimson Tide.As for t he star position, Moore and Branch both have experience there and will likely each see the field this season. At the safety spot, Battle is expected to start again and Hellams and Wright will compete for the spot next to him. Hellams earned starts in big games late last season and made the most of them. He tallied 12 tackles against Notre Dame in the Rose Bowl. - Montgomery Advertiser

Ga'Quincy McKinstry has long been known as "Kool-Aid" McKinstry, but the nickname has reached another level. The Alabama football roster now has dropped Ga'Quincy and lists the freshman defensive back as Kool-Aid McKinstry. He received the nickname from his grandma when he was born because he came out smiling, he told AL.com in 2019. McKinstry also told his kindergarten teacher that was his name when asked. His name isn't the only thing about him that is flashy. A Pinson Valley grad, McKinstry received the No. 1 CB ranking in the country for the class of 2021 from the 247Sports Composite. He also was ranked the No. 17 overall prospect for the class and the top player in Alabama as a five-star prospect. - Montgomery Advertiser
