2023 ALL-BIG SOUTH-OVC FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION FIRST TEAM: DL - Ty French, Sr., Gardner-Webb,...French was a First Team All-Conference selection for the fourth straight year. A Buck Buchanan Award Finalist for the second straight year, French set a new scho ol record for career sacks with 30.5. That mark passes GWU Hall of Famer and former Green Bay Packer Gabe Wilkinson (1990-93) who held the old mark of 28.5. French also set a new school record for career tackles-for-loss with 58. His 17.5 tackles-for-los s this season are tied with Jason Burns (1990) for the eighth-most in a single season and are the 10th most in the FCS. The league's sack leader tied a Big South single-season mark with 11.0 sacks in 2022 and contributed 61 total tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss and 15 quarterback pressures. He also forced a fumble and recorded his first career interception. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound junior is only one sack shy of Gardner-Webb's singl e-season mark, set by Chris Mintz in 1999. 2022 BIG SOUTH DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Ty French, DL, Jr., Gardner-Webb,...French (Moultrie, Ga.) is a finalist for the Stats Perform FCS Buck Buchanan National Defensive Player of the Year Award, and finished the regular-season as the Big South le ader in quarterback sacks with 11.0 -- tying the league single-season record. He tallied 61 total tackles, 13.5 tackles-for-loss, 15 quarterback pressures, one interception and one forced fumble. French is fifth nationally in sacks per game (1.00) and 37 th in TFL per contest (1.2).The first Runnin' Bulldog to be voted Big South Defensive Player of the Year since 2008, French had 4.5 sacks in three games vs. FBS opponents this season, in addition to a streak of three-straight games with 2.0 sacks. During the five-game Big South season, French was tops with 5.5 sacks, ranked sixth with 6.5 TFL, and amassed 23 total tackles. He posted a tackle-for-loss in nine of 11 appearances, as well as a sack in eight different outings. French received seven fi rst-place votes and 27 points in the voting, ahead of Bryant linebacker Joe Andreessen (three first-place votes and 21 points) and North Carolina A&T linebacker Jacob Roberts (one first-place vote and 19 points). - Big South Football

French has 22.5 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks in just 14 career games so far, disrupting opposing defenses to the tune of 132 lost yards. MARCH 1 BIG SOUTH FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Gardner-Webb defensive end Ty French amassed 12 total tackles (five solo), 4.0 tackles for loss (-11), 1.5 sacks (-7) and three quarterback hurries to help Gardner-Webb to its 42-20 victory over No. 24 Elon. He was key in the pass rush that limited Elon to just two downfield plays longer than 20 yards. French was on a pair of sacks in the fourth quarter, had a pair of third down tackles in that forced punts, and helped hold Elon to minus-8 yards rushing in the sec ond half.
