Ricky Pearsall, Florida, Player News

Receiver Ricky Pearsall tossed Gators fans some good news on Saturday. "I'm back," he posted on Twitter. Pearsall announced that he plans to return for his final year of eligibility in 2023. Pearsall debated whether to declare for the draft or return to school, finally revealing his decision on social media. The Gators and head coach Billy Napier will gladly welcome Pearsall back for his second season at UF. Pearsall transferred last spring from Arizona State and proved to be one of Florida's most produ ctive players. "He's a great competitor," Napier said last month. "A guy last made our team better."A fourth-year junior in 2022, Pearsall was hobbled early in the season by a foot injury suffered the first week of preseason camp. However, once he returned to full speed, Pearsall became one of the team's most dangerous offensive weapons. He caught 33 passes for a career-high 661 yards and five touchdowns, and rushed for 113 yards and a score. He had his best game in the regular-season finale at F lorida State, catching five passes for a career-high 148 yards and two touchdowns. - Florida Gators Football

Ten days after being sidelined with a reported foot injury, wide receiver Ricky Pearsall took part in an individual drill with receivers for the first time since the injury. But Pearsall, still in a non-contact jersey, did not do live routes with quarter backs. Instead he went back to the sidelines to ride the exercise bike and later did some resistance training in the end zone, towing teammate Justin Shorter with an exercise band tied around his waist. Pearsall, an Arizona State transfer who had 48 catc hes for 580 yards and 4 TDs last weekend, flashed the first week in camp for the Gators. - Gainesville Sun

A spot was taken just six days prior when the Gators reached into the transfer portal and added Arizona State transfer wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, the Sun Devils' leading pass-catcher during the 2021 season. Pearsall has already arrived in Gainesville in time for the phase five, summer regimen, of Napier's eight-phase plan, giving him more than two months to acclimate to the program and develop relationships with his teammates and new coaches. With Pearsall hailing from Arizona State, where Napier pre viously worked as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator, there was familiarity between the parties prior to his decision and arrival in Florida. As the talent-acquisition portion of the upcoming season draws closer to a close, the Gators hav e made recent moves to improve the roster, whether it's via the transfer portal or elevating a walk-on to scholarship. "We felt like Ricky's skill set fit our team, fit our offense. We had some familiarity. There was some relationships there because the year in Arizona State some of our staff members, some of the common relationships," Napier said. "So I think Ricky's a good person. I think he's competitive. I think that he's proved himself...I think he can catch the ball. He's proved to be a run-after- catch player. I think he's got some toughness to his game. He can play on special teams. I think he gives; we're adding a player that has had a ton of production in the past and we feel like the player can help our team." - Gainesville Sun

The numbers don't accurately convey Ricky Pearsall's worth. Not the 48 catches last season at Arizona State. Not the three stars assigned to his high school recruiting ranking. Certainly not the clunky 4.65 time he posted at a camp several years ago. On Wednesday afternoon, as the former Pac-12 receiver boarded a connecting flight from Tempe to Gainesville, his father spoke with The Athletic about why the coveted transfer chose Florida over Oregon, the impact of teaming up with quarterback Anthony Richa rdson, and why the NIL component of his recruitment is being overblown. "Ultimately, it came down to Billy Napier and his staff," said Ricky Pearsall Sr., who described the daily communication from Florida as "pure and genuine" over the past month. Pears all entered the portal April 21, though the thought of transferring had been weighing upon him ever since his close friend, quarterback Jayden Daniels, departed in February for LSU.The family visited Florida's campus in late April, and Pearsall's father called the trip impressive, featuring an array of touchpoints, including a training staff "that's superior at keeping athletes healthy and on the field." It boiled down to an Oregon-Florida duel as the Pearsalls dug into evaluating both quarterbac k situations. They looked at spring film of Richardson and Ducks newcomer Bo Nix, himself a transfer from Auburn. Whereas Nix was a three-year SEC starter with more than 1,000 college pass attempts, Richardson has started one game and thrown 66 passes. " Anthony has a great amount of potential that we really liked, but he hasn't seen the field as much because he's young," said Pearsall Sr. "Bo Nix has shown that he can produce." - The Athletic, Florida

The Arizona State football team is two weeks removed from the completion of spring football and the program has been dealt some serious blows as two of its top players are headed to the transfer portal. The duo consists of sophomore linebacker Eric Gentr y and junior wide receiver Ricky Pearsall. Sources close to the program say the moves are NIL-driven. Media covering Notre Dame have indicated that the Fighting Irish are pursuing Pearsall. The loss of Pearsall is crucial because it is perhaps ASU's weak est position. The Corona Del Sol product was the top performer in that unit with 48 catches for a team-high 530 yards. His 132 receiving yards against UCLA was the only 100-plus yard performance from an ASU receiver last season. - Arizona Republic
