 Juwan Mitchell, Colorado, Player News

Texas linebacker Juwan Mitchell is transferring to Tennessee football. Mitchell announced his decision Monday on Twitter, addressing a major need on Josh Heupel's first Tennessee team. "Get ready for the SEC takeover!" Mitchell wrote. "(Vols football) let's ride. Can't wait to ball out in front of 103,000 every Saturday." The 6-foot-1, 230-pound Mitchell played in 21 games and started 13 in two seasons at Texas. Mitchell led Texas in tackles last season with 62. He also had 4½ tackles for loss, one quarterback hurry, one pass breakup and one fumble recovery for the Longhorns. Mitchell, a Newark, New Jersey, played a season at Butler Community College in Kansas before transferring to Texas. Tennessee's linebacker corps were depleted this offseason. - Knoxville News Sentinel

After a short break, Steve Sarkisian's introduction to the football players at Texas resumed Thursday. The Longhorns, whose spring workouts were shut down March 24 because of what the school described as "student-athletes impacted by COVID-19 protocols," returned to the practice field in the morning. "Clearly we had a little bit of rustiness, having the time off," Sarkisian said. "It was good to have remotely close to our full allotment of players, which is key. This time of year, we're trying to teach schemes on offense, defense and special teams." There was one notable player missing from practice, however. Sarkisian confirmed reports that senior linebacker Juwan Mitchell, who led the team in tackles last season, has entered the transfer portal. He started 13 games over the past two seasons. - Austin American Statesman

When Texas opens its 2021 football season, its leading receiver and tackler will both still be wearing the No. 6 jersey. Texas receiver Joshua Moore and linebacker Juwan Mitchell both announced on Thursday that they will return to the Longhorns. Moore and Mitchell separately revealed their plans with videos that were published on their Twitter accounts. A linebacker, Mitchell led Texas with his 62 tackles in 2020. Herman had previously said that Mitchell would be back, but the player had yet to say so himself. The 2021 season will be Mitchell's third at Texas. Mitchell also played at Butler Community College in 2018. - Austin American Statesman

Texas senior linebacker Juwan Mitchell will have to sit out the first half of Tuesday's Alamo Bowl, but at least he isn't going anywhere long term. Coach Tom Herman said Monday that Texas' leading tackler this season has indicated to the coaching staff that he will return to the Longhorns for 2021. The NCAA is giving all players an extra year of eligibility because of the pandemic. Mitchell will have to miss the first half against Colorado because of his targeting call in the second half of the Kansas State game back on Dec. 5. Herman said freshman Jaylan Ford will start in Mitchell's place. Mitchell, who has a team-high 59 tackles, isn't the only senior taking advantage of the NCAA rule change. - Austin American Statesman
