2022 WALTER CAMP FIRST TEAM ALL-AMERICAN: TE Michael Mayer, Notre Dame,...Mayer led all FBS tight ends in touchdown receptions in 2022 while posting a team-high 67 receptions for 809 yards. The Independence, Kentucky, native finished his career at Notre Dame as the greatest statistical tight end in school history, setting program tight end marks for receptions (180), yards (2,099) and touchdown receptions (18) while also owning the single-season tight end records for receptions (71 in 2021), yards (840 in 2021) and touchdowns (9 in 2022). Among Mayer's noteworthy games in 2022 was an 11-catch, 118-yard, two-touchdown performance against No. 16/16 BYU in Las Vegas, a game in which he established a tight end record for receptions in a game.

He piled up six catches for 115 yards and a touchdown against UNLV, seven catches for 88 yards and a score at North Carolina, four catches for 44 yards and a touchdown against No. 5/5 Clemson and eight catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns at No. 5/5 Southern Cal. Mayer, who has declared for the 2023 NFL Draft, led all active FBS tight ends in receptions (180) and yards (2,099). He also finished his career third on Notre Dame's all-time receptions list while becoming the 13th Irish player to amass 2,000 receiving yards in a career. Mayer ended his time at Notre Dame on a 36-game streak of games with at least one reception which represented every game he suited up in the blue and gold. - Notre Dame Football

Mike Mayer caught six passes for 115 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown, Isaiah Foskey blocked two punts to set up a touchdown and a field goal and Notre Dame beat UNLV 44-21 on Saturday, just the second victory in four home games this season for the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame (4-3) hadn't scored a first-quarter touchdown in its first six games, being outscored 27-6, but scored two on Saturday and added a three field goals by Blake Grupe to open a 23-7 lead. It was a familiar story for the Rebels (4-4), who lost their third straight and have been outscored 96-40 in the first quarter. The Irish added another touchdown in the second quarter on a 1-yard run by Mitchell Evans and squandered two more scoring chances, including going for it on fourth-and-3 from the 7-yard line when Drew Pyne's pass to Mayer was incomplete. Pyne also had a deflected pass intercepted at the UNLV 19-yard line by Nohl Williams late in the second quarter.

Pyne, who entered last week's game against Stanford completing 72.5% of his passes before going 13 of 27 against the Cardinal, struggled again on Saturday. He was 14 of 28 passing for 205 yards and threw the touchdown pass to Mayer and added a 4-yard scoring pass to Braden Lenzy. He also scrambled for a 21-yard run to set up the touchdown by Evans. Grupe kicked field goals of 43, 27 and 46 yards. Logan Diggs rushed for 130 yards on 28 yards and Chris Tyree and Audric Estime added scoring runs. Courtney Reese led the Rebels with 142 yards rushing on 11 carries, including runs of 74 and 47 yards to set up UNLV's first two touchdowns. Jordan Younge-Humphrey scored touchdowns on runs of 2 yards and 1 yard. The Rebels have struggled offensively since quarterback Doug Brumfield sustained a concussion in the first quarter two weeks ago. They also were without leading rusher Aidan Robbins, who injured his knee against Air Force last week. Cameron Friel started at quarterback and was 9 of 18 passing for 73 yards. Harrison Bailey was 8 of 15 for 80 yards. The Irish outgained the Rebels 428 yards to 299 yards. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

Drew Pyne threw for 262 yards and three touchdowns, Michael Mayer caught 11 passes for 118 yards and two scores and Notre Dame won its third straight by beating No. 16 Brigham Young 28-20 on Saturday night. The game was the 11th edition of Notre Dame's annual Shamrock Series and marked the first time the Irish faced a fellow FBS Independent since a 44-6 victory over Army in 2016. The Irish opened 0-2 under first-year coach Marcus Freeman with losses against No. 3 Ohio State and at home to Marshall before their win streak. BYU (4-2) was led by quarterback Jaren Hall, who was 9 of 17 for 120 yards passing with two touchdowns. Chris Brooks rushed for 90 yards on 14 carries, including one touchdown, while Kody Epps caught four passes for 100 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Notre Dame improved to 11-0 all-time in its Shamrock Series, in front of an announced gathering of 62,742, the largest crowd for a college athletic event in Nevada history. Trailing 25-6 early in the second half, the Cougars made things interesting by scoring 14 unanswered points to make it 25-20. After Brooks cut Notre Dame's lead to five with a 28-yard touchdown scamper, Cougars linebacker Max Tooley picked off Pyne and put the ball back in the BYU's hands. But the Cougars couldn't capitalize and went three-and-out. Blake Grupe's 20-yard field goal gave the Irish an eight-point lead. BYU then drove into Notre Dame territory but had its drive halted when defensive tackle Jayson Ademilola dragged Cougars running back Lopini Katoa down on 4th-and-1. Notre Dame set the tone early when TaRiq Bracy intercepted Hall on the first offensive play from scrimmage. The Irish's ensuing drive stalled at the BYU 8-yard-line and they settled for a field goal to take an early 3-0 lead. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 2: 7. Michael Mayer, Jr, TE, Notre Dame, 6-5, 265, 1,...Notre Dame's shocking 26-21 loss to Marshall is pushing the Irish down the ratings, but Mayer continues to do his part. Against the Thundering Herd, Mayer led Notre Dame with eight catches for 103 yards and a touchdown. Previous week, No. 7: While ND fans griped about the Irish offense being boring in 21-10 loss at second-ranked Ohio State, they should have no complaints about tight end Michael Mayer. He blocked well and led Notre Dame with five catches for 32 yards. - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

Isaiah Foskey, Jarrett Patterson and Michael Mayer aren't just preseason All-America selections for Notre Dame football. Friday, they learned they would be 2022 captains as well. Joining them on the six-player list are wide receiver Avery Davis, out for the season with his second ACL tear in nine months but still helping out at practice; and linebackers Bo Bauer and JD Bertrand.

Davis and Patterson also held the honor last season, making them the 21st and 22nd two-time Irish captains over the past century. Robert Hainsey (2019-20), Ian Book (2019-20), Drue Tranquill (2017-18), Mike McGlinchey (2016-17), Nick Martin (2014-15), Sheldon Day (2014-15) and Zack Martin (2012-13) also repeated as captains in recent years. Patterson, a three-year starter at center who converted to left guard before training camp, is questionable for the season opener on Sept. 3 at Ohio State with a sprained right foot. Mayer, the record-breaking tight end projected to go in the top 10 of the NFL Draft next spring, is the only junior on the list. Foskey, a fourth-year junior defensive end, is a likely first-round pick in 2022 as well. - South Bend Tribune

Marcus Freeman watches Notre Dame sophomore tight end Michael Mayer strut onto the practice field every day and sees a rare chess piece for which he still hasn't devised an answer. He also sees a potential position switch worth fantasizing and salivating over. "I keep telling him, 'Man, come on to the dark side.'" the Irish first-year defensive coordinator said of his would-be defensive end project.

"I don't think (offensive coordinator) Tommy (Rees) is going to let that happen. God, he is a great football player. And the best part about it is we have to have him for two more years." The 6-foot-5, 251-pound Mayer actually doubled as an elite defensive end at Covington Catholic High School in Park Hills, Ky., racking up 99 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, five forced fumbles and four interceptions for a team that went 15-0 his senior season and 44-1 over his final three years, winning two Kentucky Class 5A state titles. "I think it was more of a personal decision on which one do I like more?" Mayer said of his ultimate college/pro position trajectory. "Which one do I have more fun with? Which one can I play in the league with? "I think I enjoy tight end a little bit more. I enjoy catching touchdowns more. Pancaking people. Running routes. Stuff like that. So I just decided if I'm going to pick this, let's stick with it, work with it and that's what I've been doing." - Indianapolis Star/News

Tommy Rees knows what an offense looks like when its go-to receiver plays tight end. When Rees was a junior quarterback for Notre Dame in 2012, tight end Tyler Eifert led the Irish in receiving yards (685), receiving touchdowns (4) and tied for the team high in receptions (50). So if tight end Michael Mayer becomes Notre Dame's best receiving option as a sophomore in 2021, the Irish offensive coordinator should know how to make that work. "I don't see why it should be any different in terms of being able to feature someone," Rees said Thursday following Notre Dame's 12th spring football practice. Even as a freshman, Mayer wasn't far off from being quarterback Ian Book's preferred target. He tied wide receiver Javon McKinley for a team-high 42 receptions but for significantly fewer yards (450 to 717) and one fewer touchdown (2 to 3).

An increased role for Mayer that results in him outgaining Notre Dame's wide receivers this season might not be a stretch, but it's far too early to predict how his production will stack up with the rest of Notre Dame's offense. That's because Rees is still working to identify the identity the offense will adapt in his second season as a play caller. What is clear, though, is that the 6-foot-5, 249-pound Mayer needs to be heavily involved. "For us, it's all about trying to isolate matchups for Mike," Rees said. "How do we get him in a situation where they cannot help? Where can we get him one-on-one? It really doesn't matter if it's a corner, then he's going to have a size advantage. If it's a safety or a linebacker, he's going to have an agility advantage. "We're going to do as many things as we can to try to isolate him where they can't help with a second player." - South Bend Tribune

Notre Dame will hold its first spring football practice this Saturday, it was announced Wednesday. The Irish unveiled a plan for 14 spring practices running through April 29. Details for the 15th practice, the Blue Gold-Game, have yet to be released. Head coach Brian Kelly is scheduled to address reporters on Zoom press conferences following Saturday's first practice. The first 14 spring practices will be closed to the media and the public. Notre Dame held only one practice last year on March 5 before the rest of the spring schedule was wiped out due to precautions pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic. - South Bend Tribune

In the most unusual year for freshman football players amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Irish have been able to rely on a few freshmen to repeatedly make impacts. Those freshmen will again be called upon when the Irish (10-0, 9-0 ACC) meet No. 3 Clemson (9-1, 8-1) in the ACC Championship Game on Dec. 19 (4 p.m. EST on ABC) in Charlotte, N.C, in a rematch of the 47-40 double-overtime victory for the Irish on Nov. 7. But no Notre Dame freshman has made a bigger impact this season than tight end Michael Mayer. With five catches Saturday, Mayer became the first true freshman tight end to record 30 catches for Notre Dame since at least the reinstatement of freshman eligibility in 1972. Mayer, who has 30 catches for 337 yards and two touchdowns, is about to pass Kyle Rudolph (29 catches for 340 yards and two touchdowns) for receiving yards as a true freshman too.

Only four other true freshman tight ends have recorded double-digit catches during that time frame: Ken MacAfee (14 in 1974), Dean Masztak (13 in 1978), Alizé Mack (13 in 2015) and Derek Brown (12 in 1988). For as impressive as Mayer has been, he's also experienced his share of freshman moments including a one-yard catch on fourth-and-3 against Syracuse on which he tried to run around defenders instead of plunging ahead for the first down. "Mike didn't hit a roadblock, but there was a lot going on," Kelly said. "The tight end position, there are some complexities there with different looks each week relative to what's going on." - South Bend Tribune
