Tyler Huff threw two touchdown passes to lead Furman to a 27-14 victory over East Tennessee State on Saturday night. Ian Williams kicked two field goals and Huff hooked up with Wayne Anderson Jr. for a 15-yard touchdown with 22 seconds left in the first half to give Furman (2-1) a 13-7 lead in its Southern Conference opener. Huff connected with tight end Ryan Miller for a 3-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter to stretch the Paladins' advantage to 20-7.East Tennessee State (1-2, 0-2) c losed within 20-14 on Tyler Riddell's 11-yard scoring strike to Einaj Carter. Furman didn't wrap up the win until Dominic Roberto raced 46 yards for a touchdown with 48 seconds remaining in the game. Huff completed 24 of 40 passes for 218 yards for the P aladins. Huff also rushed for 98 yards on 13 carries. Riddell had 272 yards on 22-of-44 passing with three interceptions for the Buccaneers. Jace Wilson threw a pair of long touchdown passes in the second half and Furman stopped VMI twice in the closing minutes to earn a 37-31 victory Saturday. The win snapped a string of three straight losses for Furman (5-5, 3-4 Southern Conference). After the Paladins took a 17-0 lead on a 39-yard touchdown run by Wayne Anderson Jr., Seth Morgan fired a 56-yard touchdown pass to Michael Jackson and Hunter Rice punched over from the 2 to bring VMI back within 17-14 at intermission. Morgan hit Jackson again from 3-yards out to make it 24-21 with 6:28 left in the third quarter, and after Wilson launched a 64-yard touchdown pass to Chase Abshier, the pair combined for a third touchdown to trail 30-28 after three quarters.Wilson hit Ryan Miller with a 73-yard touchdown pass to start the fourth quarter and the Keydets answered with a 28-yard Jerry Rice field goal, but Furman stopped VMI (6-4, 4-3) on downs on its final two possessions to end the game. Wilson was 13 of 24 for 269 yards passing without a turnover. Dominic Roberto carried 17 times for 100 yards and a touchdown and Anderson carried nine times for 73 yards. Devin Abrams, who hails from Pensacola, Fla., and ran for 595 yards a nd six touchdowns while averaging 6.5 yards per carry, was joined in the backfield by Wayne Anderson, from Prosper, Texas, who rushed for 305 yards, among which were 66 and 63-yard touchdown runs against Charleston Southern and Wofford, respectively. - F urman Football
