One of West Virginia's most experienced players is returning for a fifth and final season of college football. Doug Nester, the Mountaineers' right guard, announced Thursday he is coming back for a third season at WVU, which will be his final go-around a t the college level. A native of Kenova and former standout at Spring Valley High School, Nester began his college career at Virginia Tech where he played in 19 games and started 17 at right guard over the 2019 and 2020 seasons.Nester then opted t o transfer to West Virginia and started all 13 games at the same position in 2021. In his second season with the Mountaineers, Nester made 11 starts between right tackle and right guard. With the exception of last season's loss to TCU, Nester has started each of West Virginia's other 24 games over the last two years. Nester had previously said he was undecided on whether or not he would return in the week leading up to WVU's final game of the season at Oklahoma State. - WV MetroNews

Much has been made about the fact that West Virginia returns all five starters across the offensive line. But experience alone won't be enough to tilt the scales for an offense that has largely struggled in three years under coach Neal Brown. However, ri ght guard Doug Nester believes that familiarity will be the driving force behind the needed improvement as he appeared in front of the media on Monday after the team's latest practice. "I think our chemistry is just so much better up front," Nester said. "You can tell the room has changed a lot since I got here last winter or two winters ago. Just the chemistry in there. We're all so close now and we all worked so hard together in the offseason. I think it's a whole different room." For the Mountaineers to turn the corner under new offensive coordinator Graham Harrell, it will likely have to be.By now, the struggles have been well documented. Last season WVU ranked last in the Big 12 in rushing (123.6 yards per game) and gave up the most sacks i n the league (38). Those sacks led to 294 negative yards, over a hundred more than the next highest total in the conference with Oklahoma yielding 33 sacks for 188 yards. For Nester, a standout at Spring Valley High School and a transfer from Virginia Te ch, much of his personal growth will come with health. Last season, the 6-foot-7, 320-pounder battled through a hand injury, requiring a large cast that he didn't shed until late in the season. Since spring practices, Nester has been healthy (and sans ca st) and he said that has made - and will continue to make - a big difference in his performance. Mountaineer offensive lineman Doug Nester smiles before he even hears the question. He knows it, or some form of it, is coming, and he knows that only one thing can stop it. "Will the offensive line be better this year?" That's the query posed by basical ly every media member, and pretty much every fan, when discussing the Mountaineer forward wall in advance of the 2022 season. While many other questions must be answered with positive results if WVU is to exceed last year's six-win total, there's no ques tion that betterment of play up front is the first item that has to be put in place. From it, everything else springs, from running room for the backs to time to throw for the QBs. With that understood, Nester and his linemates are working on technique, breaking the facets of line play down into their smallest components while getting as many reps as possible in to hone their craft. With no contact allowed over the summer, that's the most they can do in trying to get better.Along with that comes a focus on developing as a unit, of getting to the point where every man knows what the teammate next to him is going to do even before he does it. "We really don't talk a lot about improvement," said Nester, who handles the repetitive questions with goo d grace. "We just talk about coming in each and every day and trying to get better, at least one thing a day. I think we are ready to show that we are improved." "That's a big thing for us, the first step off the ball. The Mountaineers got a chance to size up offensive lineman Doug Nester, a transfer from Virginia Tech, during spring practice following his enrollment at WVU last January. Over the summer, West Virginia added four more transfers from other four-year coll eges - linebacker Lance Dixon from Penn State, defensive lineman Darel Middleton from Tennessee, linebacker Deshawn Stevens from Maine and cornerback Charles Woods from Illinois State.All five of those transfers are expected to play important role s for the Mountaineers in 2021. Nester got a chance to prove his ability in the spring and appears likely to have won a starting job at right guard. Former Spring Valley offensive lineman Doug Nester was in the giving mood on Christmas Day. Nester gave West Virginia fans the news they'd waited to hear when he announced on social media Friday evening that he was committing to the Mountaineers and head coach Neal Brown. The announcement comes after Nester entered the transfer portal last week following two seasons at Virginia Tech. "I wanted to go somewhere that can get me to that next level that I want to go," Nester said. "I see what Neal Brown and those guys are putting together up there. I feel like I'd fit in really well there." Virginia Tech offensive linemen Doug Nester and Bryan Hudson will likely enter their names into the transfer portal this week, a source close to the situation has told The Roanoke Times. A Virginia Tech school spokesperson said as of Tuesday night their names weren’t officially in the transfer portal, but declined comment on whether they intended to transfer.
