  2022 ALL-CAA FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM: Tristan Wheeler, Richmond, LB, Jr.,...Wheeler has 97 tackles, nine tackles for loss (-24 yards), two sacks, two interceptions, three pass breakups and three quarterback hurries. He recorded a career-high 19 tackles to open the season at Virginia. His total tackles this season and tackles per game (8.8) rank fourth in the CAA. He has helped lead Richmond to the third-best defense in the CAA, allowing just 29 touchdowns on the season while holding opponents to 330.5 yards per game. - Richmond Football

He is a three-time All-CAA selection with two of those coming as First Team selections. He was named Second Team All-America by Stats Perform last fall and was a First Team Sophomore All-America honoree by HERO Sports. He led the team and the CAA in total tackles in the regular season with 114.

He ranked eighth in the nation in total tackles and tackles per game (10.4). He enters the season with 256 total tackles in 27 career games. Wheeler was a Buck Buchanan Award Watch List honoree last fall and has posted back-to-back full seasons with over 100 tackles. He was a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award during the shortened spring season in 2021 after posting 38 tackles in four games. The 2019 CAA Defensive Rookie of the Year is now a two-time First Team All-Conference selection in the spring season and the fall. Wheeler led the entire CAA in tackles this year and ranked eighth in the nation with 114 tackles, averaging 10.4 tackles per game. He added six tackles for loss, one sack and two interceptions in the Spiders' final three games on the year. All Wheeler has done since stepping on campus is make plays as he has 256 tackles in 27 career games.   2019 ALL-COLONIAL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION THIRD TEAM (COACHES): Tristan Wheeler, Richmond, LB, Fr., Bethlehem, Pa.,...Wheeler was named the league's Defensive Rookie of the Year, marking the first time a Spider has won the award since 2007 when Eric McBride picked up the honor. He was just named one of the 20 finalists for the Jerry Rice Award, given to the top freshman in NCAA FCS by STATS, Inc. He finished his rookie campaign tied for the team lead and leading all freshmen in the country in tackles this year with 104, despite not starting until the fourth game of the year.

He becomes the first freshman in the NCAA FCS to reach the 100-tackle mark in a season since 2017 when Bryson Armstrong of Kennesaw State accomplished the task on his way to winning the Jerry Rice Award. Wheeler becomes the first true freshman in Colonial Athletic Association history to reach the 100-tackle mark in a single season and the first freshman of any kind since Gage Steele (redshirt freshman) of James Madison in 2013.   2019 JERRY RICE AWARD WATCH LIST: Tristan Wheeler, LB, Richmond: 76 tackles (36 solo), 3 TFL, 1 sack, 1 PBU, 1 FF (9 games),...Wheeler is second on the team and second in the country among all freshmen with 76 total tackles, averaging 8.4 tackles per game. Wheeler, who did not start until the fourth game of the year, ranks seventh overall in the Colonial Athletic Association in total tackles and is the top freshman tackler in the league.

Wheeler has posted four games this season with at least 10 tackles, including a career-high 13 tackles against Fordham. He has also 3.0 tackles for loss and 1.0 sack on the season while forcing one fumble.   The University of Richmond football team opened the 2019 season in impressive fashion, scoring 31 first half points on its way to a 38-19 victory against Jacksonville Thursday night at Robins Stadium. The Spiders have won 14th straight home openers dating back to 2005, the ninth longest streak in the NCAA FCS level. Redshirt-junior quarterback Joe Mancuso (Blairsville, Ga.) finished with 208 total yards and scored two touchdowns. He rushed for a career-high 77 yards on the ground while also passing for 14-for-19 with 131 yards passing.

The Richmond offense ran for 320 yards, including four touchdowns from Mancuso (two) and one each from redshirt freshman running backs Aaron Dykes (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Milan Howard (Charlotte, N.C.). The Spiders opened the game with a 10-play 80-yard drive capped off by a four-yard touchdown rush by Mancuso. Freshman linebacker Tristan Wheeler (Bethlehem, Pa.) led the defense with 12 tackles in his first career collegiate game. Junior linebacker Tyler Dressler (Covington, Va.) added nine tackles, most in the first half, while Ritten and Jackson each finished with a tackle for loss in the win. - Richmond Football
