Michigan defensive back Mike Sainristil is returning for a fifth season. The 5-foot-10, 182-pounder announced his decision on Twitter late Sunday night - one day after the Wolverines beat Purdue to win their second straight Big Ten title. "I want to start off by thanking Coach Harbaugh and the University of Michigan for an amazing 4 years," Sainristil wrote. "The opportunity coach gave me when he offered was one that changed my life beyond football. My family and I can't thank you enough coach! The season is not over. In fact, it is just getting started. Just like my team here at the university. "With that being said, I will be back for my 5th year as a Wolverine and won't be entering my name in the 2023 NFL Draft after the season. Team 143, let's finish the mission and bring the big one home!"

Because the NCAA issues blanket waivers for all student-athletes in 2020, Sainristil has another year of eligibility despite never redshirting. The former three-star recruit from Massachusetts has been one of the biggest surprises in 2022, switching from receiver to nickelback - a vital position in Michigan's defense previously played by first-round pick Daxton Hill. Sainristil immediately earned a starting role in Michigan's defense and has 51 tackles (fourth on the team), seven pass breakups (second) and two sacks this season. He is a 2022 all-Big Ten honorable mention by coaches and media. - Ann Arbor News

One of the potential stars in the defensive secondary is Mike Sainristil, who has played receiver and special teams during his Michigan career. During spring practice, Harbaugh decided to give him a look on defense at nickel and cornerback. He also took offensive reps and is going to factor into special teams, giving him the potential to be a three-way player. In June, Harbaugh said he knows Sainristil is going to stick on defense this season because he stood out defensively in the spring. Several players during Big Ten media days said he's going to be a player to watch this season. Camp will go a long way toward establishing Sainristil as a significant factor in the defensive secondary. - Detroit News

Teammate and fellow receiver Ronnie Bell isn't surprised by Mike Sainristil's success. He says the Michigan coaching staff has tinkered with Sainristil on defense for years now, only to eventually send him back to the offensive side. "Once they kept him over there, I knew it would just take him a couple practices and he would get it down," Bell said. "And that's exactly what happened. "He stepped over and went from losing a couple reps to not losing no more reps." The result? Michigan plans to deploy Sainristil in many different ways this fall, with Harbaugh projecting him as a two or three-way player. "He's going to play special teams as well," Harbaugh. "Super excited. Super excited." - Ann Arbor News

Michigan has converted wide receiver Mike Sainristil into a nickel cornerback, and according to head coach Jim Harbaugh, the former three-star recruit is a natural at the position. "I know he's gonna stick on defense because he just went through spring practice where he not only stuck, but he really, really stood out," Harbuagh said. Sainristil was the fourth leading receiver on last year's squad, hauling in 21 receptions for 305 yards and two touchdowns. - On3.com
