Michigan defensive back Mike Sainristil is returning for a fifth season. The 5-foot-10, 182-pounder announced his decision on Twitter late Sunday night - one day after the Wolverines beat Purdue to win their second straight Big Ten title. "I want to start off by thanking Coach Harbaugh and the University of Michigan for an amazing 4 years," Sainristil wrote. "The opportunity coach gave me when he offered was one that changed my life beyond football. My family and I can't thank you enough coach! The season is not over. In fact, it is just getting started. Just like my team here at the university. "With that being said, I will be back for my 5th year as a Wolverine and won't be entering my name in the 2023 NFL Draft after the season. Team 143, let's finish the mission and bring the big one home!"

Because the NCAA issues blanket waivers for all student-athletes in 2020, Sainristil has another year of eligibility despite never redshirting. The former three-star recruit from Massachusetts has been one of the biggest surprises in 2022, switching from receiver to nickelback - a vital position in Michigan's defense previously played by first-round pick Daxton Hill. Sainristil immediately earned a starting role in Michigan's defense and has 51 tackles (fourth on the team), seven pass breakups (second) and two sacks this season. He is a 2022 all-Big Ten honorable mention by coaches and media. - Ann Arbor News
