 Phil Jurkovec, Pittsburgh, Player News

  12/04/22 - QB Phil JurkovecrSr/2024, Pittsburgh, 6-5, 243 (DS#31 QB) + More +

Phil Jurkovec, Boston College quarterback and former Pine-Richland High School star, entered the transfer portal Friday and has an interest in possibly coming to Pitt. But he said a number of other schools also had contacted him. Jurkovec spent the past three seasons at Boston College after transferring from Notre Dame. He has an extra year of eligibility because of COVID-19. "It's not like I'm that close to a decision yet," Jurkovec said. Jurkovec said he has heard from Power Five conference schools, as well as colleges from smaller conferences. "I really liked Boston College, but it just wasn't the right situation for me right now," Jurkovec said. "There are no hard feelings. Coach [Jeff] Hafley wishes me the best and he's trying to help me out. I'm not leaning one way or another. I have to take in all the information right now."

Pitt offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti Jr. was Boston College's offensive coordinator for Jurkovec's first two seasons at Boston College. Whether Jurkovec ends up at Pitt might hinge on whether Kedon Slovis uses his final year of eligibility at Pitt, transfers elsewhere or turns to the NFL. "In regards to Pitt, I really like coach Cignetti because of the past. That's a huge draw," Jurkovec said. "Coach [Pat] Narduzzi always has been good to me, too. I'm very interested in Pitt, but we'll see how this plays out and what exactly is the situation at Pitt." - Pittsburgh Post Gazette

Although action doesn't officially start until Monday, among the reported quarterbacks in, or planning to be to enter the transfer portal as of Dec. 1 is Boston College's Phil Jurkovec: Jurkovec began his career at Notre Dame in 2018, transferred to BC after the 2019 season and now is transferring again for his final season of eligibility. Injuries limited him to 14 games in the past two seasons. When healthy in 2020, Jurkovec played well (255.8 passing yards per game, 17 TDs, five interceptions). He struggled the past two seasons because of the injuries – 187.5 passing yards per game, 18 TDs, 12 picks. He and backup Emmett Morehead took a ton of hits this season because of a lackluster line; BC surrendered 46 sacks, the most of any Power 5 school and third-most among the reported all teams. If his new team gets the 2020 Jurkovec, good things can happen. - NFL Draft Scout and online sources

Phil Jurkovec threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns and scrambled for a 33-yard run that set up the game-winning field goal on Saturday as Boston College knocked Louisville quarterback Malik Cunningham out of the game and beat the Cardinals 34-33. Cunningham ran for three touchdowns and threw for another before finishing the game on the sideline. He was taken out for one play in the third quarter following a hit to the head; he came back for two full series before backup Brock Domann handled the last two possessions of the game. The second, after Connor Lytton's 26-yard field goal gave BC the lead with 1:56 left, ended where it started after four straight incompletions.

Boston College then ran out the clock - or tried to. With 2 seconds left for the fourth down play, Jurkovec took several steps back before kneeling and the time showed 0:00. But after the teams left their benches for the postgame handshakes - and some BC fans joined them - the officials put 1 second back on the clock and gave Louisville a final play. Domann's pass was intercepted at the 8 yard line by Kam Arnold. Zay Flowers caught five passes for 151 yards - including touchdowns of 57 and 69 yards - and Alex Broome ran for a 40-yard score for BC (2-3, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference). Cunningham threw for 186 yards and ran for 53 more for Louisville (2-3, 0-3). - Boston College/AP College Football

Phil Jurkovec completed 25 of 37 passes for 320 yards with two touchdowns to lead Boston College past Maine 38-17 on Saturday night for its first victory of the season. Pat Garwo III had two scoring runs, Jaden Williams added one, and Zay Flowers and George Takacs each had a TD catch for the Eagles (1-2). Flowers' was a 51-yarder. Joe Fagnano went 21 for 43 with 289 yards passing with two TDs and two interceptions for the Black Bears (0-3).

Maine, a heavy underdog, led 10-7 in the opening quarter before BC scored on three of its next four possessions to open a 28-10 halftime edge. Jurkovec's 2-yard TD toss to tight end Takacs in the left corner of the end zone with just over a minute left in the opening quarter gave the Eagles the lead for good. Williams' 9-yard jet sweep for a score capped the ensuing drive and made it 21-10. Garwo scored on a 1-yard run with just over a minute left in the half. Fagnano's 17-yard TD toss to Shawn Bowman gave the Black Bears their three-point edge. - Boston College/AP College Football

First-year offensive coordinator John McNulty has marveled at his thoroughness, meticulousness, and discipline. When he introduces a concept, Phil Jurkovec grasps it immediately. There's never any gray area, McNulty said, and Jurkovec is never going to wing anything or leave out any possible wrinkle. "He's already processed A to G, so to speak, and he's on to H," McNulty said. McNulty said Jurkovec will be a "hugely intriguing" prospect next year if he breaks out like former Pittsburgh QB Kenny Pickett.

He said he's the old prototypical-size quarterback with new-prototypical skills. "I don't see any reason why he's not in that mix of first-round guys," McNulty said. "There's only so many guys that can do these things." But first, Jurkovec has unfinished business at BC. Shimko talks with him every day, and he's never heard Jurkovec mention the NFL draft. His father, Jim Jurkovec, credits Hafley & Co. for changing the trajectory of his son's journey and helping him regain his mojo. He sees a familiar version of his son that had been absent for too long. "I think it's evident in the people that I speak with that he's a different person," Jim Jurkovec said. "He's happier, he's more content. He's at peace with where he is and who he is." - Boston Globe

2022 PRESEASON WALTER CAMP PLAYER OF YEAR PLAYER TO WATCH: Phil Jurkovec, QB, senior, Boston College,...Jurkovec is one of eight representatives, including five quarterbacks, from the ACC on the list. Jurkovec played in just six games for the Eagles in 2021 following a wrist injury suffered in week two. Despite the setback, he threw for 915 yards and seven touchdowns, while guiding BC to a 4-2 record. He was named the ACC Quarterback of the Week following his return to the gridiron in a win over Virginia Tech. A week later, Jurkovec was identified as one of eight Manning Awards Stars of the Week; averaging 23.9 yards per completion in a win at Georgia Tech. In his career, Jurkovec, who arrived at BC from Notre Dame in 2020, has thrown for 3,473 yards and 24 touchdowns in an Eagle uniform. He has also rushed for 472 yards, averaging 3.7 per carry, and eight touchdowns. - Boston College Football

Boston College coach Jeff Hafley revealed a surprising tidbit at the ACC Kickoff on Wednesday about last year's 17-3 win over Virginia Tech. According to Hafley, starting quarterback Phil Jurkovec played the game with only 50% of his normal grip strength. Oh, and he didn't really practice leading up to the game either. Jurkovec got the surprise start against the Hokies after missing six straight games with a broken bone in his throwing hand.

Boston College's training staff expected Jurkovec to miss the rest of the season, and told Halfey as much. "He wasn't supposed to come back," Hafley said. "But the Friday before [playing Virginia Tech] the doctors told me could be cleared to practice and play. The bone was healed, and he could not hurt it anymore, but he would be at about 50% grip strength." That wasn't an estimate either. The trainers compared measurement's of Jurkovec's grip strength from when he was healthy to numbers after his cast came off. "The doctor has a grip machine," Jurkovec said. "With the hand being immobilized for awhile, the joint suffered from it. The bone was fully healthy, but the joint didn't have any motion." - Richmond Times-Dispatch

A return to college football made sense for Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec. He was on pace to have a blistering 2021 season after a breakout performance in 2020, but any high hopes were quickly curtailed very early into the year against UMass. He was able to return in November, but he was clearly not 100%. Outside of C.J. Stroud and Bryce Young, the 2023 draft board at quarterback is foggy, so if Jurkovec can show he is fully recovered from his setback then he has the opportunity to make a significant rise. - Boston Globe

Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec said on Monday that he will return for his senior season rather than enter the NFL draft. "I will be returning to Chestnut Hill in 2022 to complete my economics degree, improve all facets of my game, and compete nationally," he said in a statement issued by the school. "Let's win!" Jurkovec threw for 2,558 yards and 17 touchdowns in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. This year, he injured his right (throwing) wrist in Week 2 and missed six games before returning on Nov. 11. The Eagles went 4-2 in his starts in 2021 and are 10-6 in his career. He is fifth in school history with six 300-yard passing games in just 16 games played. - AP College Football

Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec accounted for five touchdowns - running for three and passing for two - and the Eagles beat Georgia Tech 41-30 on Saturday to become bowl-eligible. Jahmyr Gibbs, who had a 98-yard kickoff return for Georgia Tech's first touchdown, scored on a 4-yard run with 8:59 remaining, cutting Boston College's lead to 31-30. Brent Cimaglia's potential tying extra point was no good, bouncing off the right upright, preserving the Eagles' lead. The missed extra point set up Boston College's long scoring drive capped by Jurkovec's third scoring run, a 31-yarder. Boston College (6-4, 2-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) became bowl eligible with its second consecutive win following a four-game losing streak. Georgia Tech (3-7, 2-6) took its fourth consecutive loss. Quarterback Jordan Yates passed and threw for touchdowns in his fourth start of the season as Jeff Sims was held out with an undisclosed injury.

Boston College staged a 10-play, 90-yard touchdown drive following Cimaglia's miss. On third and 14 from the Boston College 6, Jurkovec completed a 22-yard pass to tight end Trae Barry to extend the drive. Connor Lytton's second field goal, a 27-yarder, capped the scoring with 25 seconds remaining. Jurkovec completed 13 of 20 passes for 310 yards. The quarterback had eight carries for 71 yards, including scoring runs of 8, 14 and 31 yards. Jurkovec returned from a right wrist injury last week to lead the Eagles to a 17-3 win over Virginia Tech. Jurkovec said this week the wrist was not fully recovered but said "we're working on it." There was some early evidence Jurkovec does not yet have full strength in the wrist as he had two passes float and fall incomplete. The junior kept passing and took advantage of the Yellow Jackets' vulnerable pass defense. - Boston College/AP College Football

Phil Jurkovec didn't take long to get a big hit in his surprising return to Boston College's starting lineup. After that, coach Jeff Hafley knew his QB would be fine. Jurkovec ran for a touchdown in his return, and the Eagles halted a four-game losing streak with a 17-3 victory over Virginia Tech on Friday night in their annual red bandana game. Jurkovec, who injured his throwing hand in Week 2, was thought to be lost for the season after surgery. He completed just 7-of-13 passes for 112 yards, but gave the Eagles (5-4, 1-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) a spark after the offense sputtered in his absence by recovering a fumble on their first drive and scoring the TD.

Hafley said Jurkovec was cleared to play last Friday. "I called him in and I would have said that's a 50-50 chance with the amount of reps he was going to take," Hafley said. "I didn't want to do anything to jeopardize or get him hurt. We wanted to guide him, and he walked in and said: ‘I'm playing. The 6-foot-5 junior was sent sprawling to the ground on a run on BC's third offensive play. "We wouldn't have let him play if we didn't feel confident about him getting hit and getting hurt," Hefley said. "Maybe part of me (was concerned), but when I saw him bounce up and the look in his eye, we felt good about that." Pat Garwo rushed for 116 yards on 30 carries and a 3-yard score for BC. - Boston College/AP College Football

Dennis Grosel replaced injured starter Phil Jurkovec in the first half and passed for 199 yards, ran for a touchdown and passed for another and Boston College beat UMass 45-28 on Saturday. Pat Garwo ran for 160 yards on 15 carries for the Eagles (2-0), who won their 11th straight against UMass. Travis Levy ran 20 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown in the fourth. Jaiden Woodbey scooped up a fumble on a punt return, taking it 41 yards for a touchdown that put the Eagles up 34-14 with 3:04 left in the third quarter.

Grosel completed 11 of 14 passes after taking over for Jurkovec, who was taken to the locker room late in the first quarter with an undisclosed injury. Although BC officials said he was "questionable" at halftime he didn't return. Coach Jeff Hafley said after the game that Jurkovec's injury involved the wrist and hand of his throwing arm, but wasn't sure how bad it was. "They took him for X-rays but I don't have a clue," Hafley said. Jurkovec completed 3 of 4 passes for 22 yards. A redshirt junior who transferred from Notre Dame before last season, he was the ACC co-quarterback of the week after throwing for 303 yards and three touchdowns in a little more than three quarters in a 51-0 victory over FCS Colgate in the season opener. - Boston College/AP College Football

Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec is now on the radar screen with much higher expectations on him in his second season with the Eagles. His first test went well. Jurkovec threw for three touchdowns and 303 yards in a little over three quarters, leading BC to a 51-0 victory over Colgate on Saturday in the season opener for both schools. Jurkovec, a 6-foot-5 redshirt junior who transferred from Notre Dame before last season, completed 16 of 24 passes with no interceptions.

Last season, he threw for 2,558 yards, the most ever by a BC quarterback in his first 10 games. "Just the expectations on Phil going in, everybody's been talking about him now," BC coach Jeff Hafley said. "Now the pressure's on him. The way he handled this today says a lot about him." He responded with his fifth career 300-yard game. After a sloppy first quarter, the Eagles took charge by scoring on their final three possessions of the second, taking a 27-0 edge into halftime. "You could tell we were a little bit shaky early on in the game, we had a couple of drops," Hafley said. "(Phil) looked comfortable, he looked confident running the ball." BC posted its first season-opening shutout since beating Northeastern 54-0 in 2009. - Boston College/AP College Football

Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec has moved on to the advanced courses in his football development. Jurkovec began the process of expanding offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti's detailed playbook for the 2021 season when the Eagles opened training camp on Friday morning inside the Fish Field House. BC, which was picked to finish in third place in the Atlantic Division in the ACC preseason poll, opens the campaign at Alumni Stadium on Sept. 4 against Colgate. "We have everything in and everybody is feeling really comfortable about that," said Jurkovec following the two-hour practice in gold helmets and maroon shorts. "We can add or adjust and I'm sure we will put in a lot of new stuff and make changes throughout the season. Talking to the receivers and all the guys on offense, we feel comfortable with it because we have gone through it a lot right now. And, our spring was big for getting back to fundamentals."

The redshirt junior transfer from Notre Dame enjoyed a stellar debut season in the ACC on a team that exceeded all expectations in the age of COVID. Under first-year coach Jeff Hafley, BC went 6-5 with five league wins. BC played 11 games without a bye week and elected not to participate in a bowl game. Jurkovec started 10 games and threw for 2,558 yards, the most by any BC quarterback over his first 10 games in program history. Jurkovec also became the first BC quarterback to toss for more than 300 yards in four of his first five starts. - Boston Herald

Boston College coach Jeff Hafley presided over a house divided during Saturday's annual Jay McGillis Memorial spring football game at Alumni Stadium. The roster was equitably split into Team Boston, led by quarterback Phil Jurkovec, and Team Eagles under the command of Dennis Grosel. Both quarterbacks were also listed as the team's respective head coaches on roster handouts. Jurkovec and Grosel effectively executed nondescript game plans in the first half. The contest went to running time with situational football in the second half. Graduate student safety Deon Jones was the recipient of the Jay McGillis Memorial Scholarship during a halftime ceremony. "I wanted the kids to get out in the stadium and have it go back and forth a bit and play hard and have some fun," said Hafley. "Everybody got in which was cool to see and that was my objective and I'm happy everybody stayed healthy." Jurkovec completed 14-of-20 passes for 196 yards that included a pair of touchdown strikes to wide receiver Zay Flowers in the final minute of the second quarter. Grosel connected on 12-of-26 for 128 yards with two interceptions. - Boston Herald

Quarterback Phil Jurkovec began his career at Boston College executing what coach Jeff Hafley described as a "vanilla" game plan in the 2020 opener at Duke. Jurkovec aced his first audition by completing 17 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns in a 26-6 victory that put tight end Hunter Long on an accelerated path to the NFL. Over the course of the season in which BC went 6-5 and 5-5 in the ACC, Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti was able to expand the playbook. Jurkovec, a Pittsburgh product who transferred to BC from Notre Dame, was effectively able to accommodate Cignetti's growth spurts. "You have to remember when Phil came in here last year he was like the rest of the guys, everything was new to him," said Cignetti. "The terminology, the actual schemes and the fundaments and the techniques.

"The process was great, the players responded to the coaches and the coaches did a great job teaching the system. The players took it from the classroom to practice. "But it being our first time together, we had to kind of figure out who we were in terms of personnel. As the season went on, we learned more about ourselves and how we would call the game." Jurkovec started 10 games and played the latter half of the season managing a left shoulder injury. Jurkovec completed 205 of 336 passes for 2,558 yards with 17 touchdowns, five interceptions and a 138.8 quarterback rating. That is an amazing stat line for a guy who started at square one in a new system with limited college experience to draw from. - Boston Herald

Hafley said quarterback Phil Jurkovec has been practicing and should play against the Cavaliers' suspect secondary and pass rush. Jurkovec emerged from a collapsed pocket in the third quarter of last Saturday's 34-27 victory over Louisville with a left-knee injury and did not return. Jurkovec was an efficient 15-of-19 for 203 yards before being helped off the field with 6:16 to play. He has completed 205-of-336 passes and his 2,558 passing yards are second to North Carolina's Sam Howell (2,842) in the ACC. Jurkovec is fifth in the ACC with a 255.8 yards per game average and he's thrown for over 300 yards in four games. "Phil looks good and I feel confident as long as he continues to progress, he will play as long as he doesn't have many setbacks," said Hafley. - Boston Herald

Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec got a clear X-ray on his injured left knee following the Eagles' 34-27 win over Louisville on Saturday and his status for next weekend's season finale at Virginia appears favorable. Jurkovec was injured in a collapsing pocket with 6:16 to play in the third quarter and did not return. Backup Dennis Grosel came on and led BC to victory with a pair of touchdown passes.

"The X-ray came back clear and I'll go down and find out what we need to look at but that's all I really know right now," said BC coach Jeff Hafley on Sunday. "I texted him and he said it is sore but nothing too bad. I'm pretty optimistic at this point so we'll see what happens," he added. Jurkovec injured his right shoulder in the second half at Clemson on Oct. 31 and saw limited practice time in the week leading up to the game at Syracuse. Grosel was able to practice with the first unit and that experience came into play against Louisville. - Boston Herald

Phil Jurkovec threw for 145 yards and two Boston College touchdowns, adding 94 yards on the ground on Saturday as the Eagles greeted Georgia Tech by scoring on their first seven full possessions to win 48-27. Fresh off a 73-7 loss to top-ranked Clemson, the Yellow Jackets fumbled twice in the first half - including one that safety Mike Palmer returned 33 yards for a touchdown to make it 24-0. Jeff Sims responded with 32- and 33-yard TD passes, but the Georgia Tech defense wouldn't make its first stop until there were two minutes left in the third quarter. BC (4-2, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat the Yellow Jackets for the first time since 2007, when Matt Ryan led the Eagles to a win in a matchup of ranked teams. Georgia Tech (2-4, 2-3) had won the last three meetings and had never lost in Alumni Stadium. - Boston College/AP College Football

After a stunning 358-yard air-raid performance against Pittsburgh last week, BC just couldn't seem to connect on the long balls against Virginia Tech. Last week, Jurkovec tossed a couple of dimes to Zay Flowers on the run, one which went for 44 yards and the other which went for a staggering 77 yards. But when the Eagles got to Blacksburg, the deep ball connection disappeared. The combination of VT's stout pass rush-which sacked Jurkovec once-and a lockdown secondary kept BC from hitting explosive plays in the air. The Hokies' secondary notched six pass breakups and two interceptions on the night. The Eagles notched their longest completion of the night on a 43-yard pass to Jaelen Gill. Other than that, BC, which had previously found a weapon in Jurkovec's cannon of an arm, struggled immensely as Jurkovec threw into tight coverage deep down field. - The Heights

There aren't many quarterbacks in college football attempting more passes a game than Boston College's Phil Jurkovec (38 per game). He has 1,181 yards (65.1%) with eight touchdowns and helped first-year coach Jeff Hafley reshape the team's offense without running back A.J. Dillon. Jurkovec will be looking to take advantage of a depleted Tech secondary that struggled against North Carolina. Divine Deablo's return to the lineup should give the group a boost, but he's not going to magically fix all the issues Tech had last week. - Roanoke Times

Boston College has developed a passing combination that is tough to match in the ACC. Eagles quarterback Phil Jurkovec completed three touchdown passes to wide receiver Zay Flowers including a 25-yard in overtime in a 31-30 victory over Pittsburgh on Saturday at Alumni Stadium. "It started way back last spring, we started connecting and talking and it really came together when we got back after quarantine break," said Flowers, who finished with six receptions for 163 yards. "That's when we really built the connection and now we are just going." BC (3-1, 2-1 ACC) got the ball first in the extra frame and faced a third-and-10 from the 25 when Jurkovec found Flowers in the end zone for the third time. Pitt needed 11 plays, twice converting on fourth down, to score on a slant pass from Kenny Pickett to Taysir Mack. BC won the game when Alex Kessman's extra point attempt sailed wide right. "I was coming off the edge and I almost blocked it," said cornerback Brandon Sebastian. "Then I looked and went 'oh my god he missed, he shanked it,' and I was just screaming." Jurkovec completed 19-of-35 for 358 yards and three touchdowns, becoming the first BC quarterback to pass for over 300 yards in each of his first four games. - Boston Herald

Phil Jurkovec threw three touchdown passes to Zay Flowers - the last a 25-yarder in overtime - and ran for a score as Boston College beat Pittsburgh 31-30 on Saturday night when the Panthers missed an extra-point attempt to end the game. Jurkovec, a sophomore transfer from Notre Dame, was 19 of 35 for 358 yards passing as the Eagles (3-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) rebounded from a frustrating close loss to then-No. 12 North Carolina. Flowers had six catches for 162 yards.

Kenny Pickett completed 25 of 48 passes for 266 yards for Pittsburgh (3-2, 2-2). He threw two TD passes, ran for a score, and then limped off the field late in the third quarter but returned in the next series to throw an interception. On BC-s first possession in OT, Jurkovec threw a strike down the middle to Flowers in the end zone on third-and-10. Pickett hit Taysir Mack with a 3-yard TD pass, but Alex Kessman missed wide right on the PAT. He had hit a 58-yard field goal with 40 seconds left in regulation. BC-s Aaron Boumerhi was wide left on a 52-yarder as time expired to force overtime. Pittsburgh rallied from a 10-point deficit. - Boston College/AP College Football

Boston College had its finest effort of the season undone by a missed two-point conversion. The Eagles went blow for blow against No. 12 North Carolina before falling 26-22 on Saturday at Alumni Stadium. BC fell to 2-1 and 1-1 in the ACC while the Tar Heels improved to 2-0 in the league. BC quarterback Phil Jurkovec, a transfer from Notre Dame, outdueled Carolina's more celebrated signal-caller Sam Howell. Jurkovec was 37-of-56 for 313 yards and two touchdowns. Howell completed 14-of-26 for 225 yards, two touchdowns and a pick. UNC had 401 yards of total offense to 353 by the Eagles.

Jurkovec managed the two-minute offense after taking possession on the BC 31 down eight points with 5:46 to play. Jurkovec used the short passing game to get the Eagles to the UNC 10. BC had two touchdowns taken off the board because of penalties before getting one that counted. Wide receiver CJ Lewis has a 10-yard touchdown reception negated by an offensive pass interference flag. Then Jurkovec's 22-yard touchdown pass to tight end Hunter Long was called back on a holding penalty. BC finally cut the lead to 24-22 on a 6-yard scoring toss from Jurkovec to Lewis with 45 seconds remaining. Jurkovec's pass on the 2-point conversion was intercepted by Trey Morrison, who returned it to the BC end zone to put UNC up by four. "The last possession we just had a lot of confidence because we know from last week, we can make those plays in the two minutes," said Jurkovec. "The last play, basically we had a play called up with a couple of side looks and they had it zoned off and there wasn't much there." - Boston Herald

Jurkovec struggled as a passer for most of the game, gaining just 5.5 yards per attempt and repeatedly demonstrating poor decision-making ability by throwing into double or even triple coverage. Still, he demonstrated how his abilities as a runner make him an effective weapon even when the pass game isn't clicking. Jurkovec was the Eagles' leading rusher on the night, picking up 37 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the ground. At 6-foot-5, he adeptly uses his long legs to quickly pick up chunks of yards and has an impressive ability to dive forward for extra yards while still avoiding big hits. Jurkovec's strength and aggression as a runner also made him particularly effective on the QB sneak, and the Eagles took advantage of it to score two touchdowns. With BC's running backs and O-line struggling for most of the game, Jurkovec was a great option in short yardage and goal line situations. Jurkovec came alive through the air in the final few minutes of the game, completing five straight passes to bring the Eagles within scoring range. - The Heights

Boston College scored 10 points in the final 1:11 to secure an improbable 24-21 plug-ugly victory over Sun Belt Conference spoiler Texas State in BC's home opener Saturday night at Alumni Stadium. Aaron Boumerhi, who waited out three straight timeouts, kicked a 36-yard field goal with 3 seconds remaining to complete the Eagles' remarkable comeback. BC improved to 2-0 and will host North Carolina next Saturday. "That was something else and its very rare there are three timeouts left at that point," said Boumerhi. "But I was kind of expecting it, what else were they going to do with them?"

Sophomore quarterback Phil Jurkovec flawlessly executed short and intermediate passes on the Eagles' final two drives. He completed 7-of-9 passes and tied the game 21-21 on a 5-yard toss to tight end Hunter Long with 1:11 to play. The Bobcats imploded on their final possession and gave BC the ball back on its 33 with 47 seconds remaining. With the Bobcats playing a prevent defense, Jurkovec completed five straight short passes to set up the winning field goal. "Coach (Frank) Cignetti was dialing up some multiple coverage beaters that had check-downs whenever they were dropping out," said Jurkovec. "I just decided to check the ball down and get whatever was open with what they were giving us." - Boston Herald

Phil Jurkovec threw for 300 yards and two touchdowns, Zay Flowers had 162 receiving yards, and Boston College beat Duke 26-6 on Saturday to give Jeff Hafley a win in his first game as a head coach. Hafley, who served as Ohio State's co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach last season, replaced the fired Steve Addazio in December 2019. Jurkovec, the former four-star quarterback who transferred to Boston College from Notre Dame in the offseason, led the Eagles (1-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) to a touchdown on their first drive, only to see the offense sputter. But, gradually, Jurkovec started to find his rhythm. In the third quarter, Jurkovec completed 6 of 7 passes for 151 yards and both of his touchdowns. The second, a 61-yard strike to Flowers, pushed the Eagles' lead to 23-6, from which point there was no looking back. Despite tallying 351 total yards, Duke's offense was unable to capitalize in Boston College territory. Chase Brice completed 23 of 42 passes for 217 yards and two interceptions for the Blue Devils (0-2, 0-2). - AP College/Boston College Football

Boston College coach Jeff Hafley held off on naming his starting quarterback for Saturday's noon ACC opener against Duke at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, N.C. Hafley said the competition between incumbent Dennis Grosel and Notre Dame transfer Phil Jurkovec remains ongoing and the starter will be a game-time decision. The BC depth chart included the ambiguous word "or" between Jurkovec and Grosel's names and at several other positions. "You'll get a clarification when the ball is kicked off and whomever walks out of the huddle," said Hafley during his Tuesday Zoom conference. "Right now, it is 'or' so both could be starting. There are a couple of 'ors' on the depth chart and that's just how we feel right now. It's not just the quarterback position. I want to build this thing on competition."

Grosel started seven games last season so there is available game film on him. But BC employed a run-oriented offense last year. Hafley and offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti have introduced a pro set offense so BC has a whole new look. Jurkovec saw limited action last season at Notre Dame. "They both did a good job and they are both competing and it's not just the quarterback position," said Hafley. "I want there to be an urgency and I want guys coming in every day to get better." - Boston Herald

Boston College sophomore quarterback Phil Jurkovec was granted immediate eligibility from the NCAA on Tuesday. Jurkovec transferred to Boston College in January from Notre Dame. He will have three seasons of eligibility with the Eagles. Jurkovec and the Eagles begin preseason camp Thursday morning in Chestnut Hill. In six games for the Fighting Irish in 2019, Jurkovec was 12-of-16 passing for 222 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 130 yards and averaged 5.9 yards per carry as Notre Dame's backup quarterback. - Boston College Football

Five days of spring football practice is too limited a sample for a newly-organized coaching staff to make accurate player assessments. That's all Boston College had after first-year head coach Jeff Hafley had to suspend the Eagles' remaining 10 practice sessions and the annual Jay McGillis Memorial spring football game in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the small window, Hafley and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Frank Cignetti formed a favorable impression of Notre Dame transfer quarterback Phil Jurkovec. "I just think from practice one to practice five he looked like a different kid," said Hafley during a conference call. "He started to get really comfortable with the system and the players and you could start to see some leadership pop out of him."

Jurkovec, a 6-4, 227-pound, redshirt sophomore from Pittsburgh, performed his tasks under a veil of uncertainty. Jurkovec applied for a waiver to the NCAA's transfer regulation so he could eligible for the 2020 season and is awaiting their decision. Jurkovec will compete for the starting job against incumbent Dennis Grosel, who replaced injured starter Anthony Brown (knee) on Oct. 5 at Louisville. Grosel won three of the five ACC games he started and finished with a Birmingham Bowl loss to Cincinnati. - Boston Herald
