The Virginia football team won't have running back Amaad Foston this season, after he suffered a torn ACL, but the Cavaliers did get another back in the fold Monday. Ronnie Walker, who suffered a leg injury in the spring, returned to practice Monday and is expected to be cleared to play this season, UVa running backs coach Keith Gaither said after the workout. "Just kind of see how he progresses on," said offensive coordinator Des Kitchings. "If he gets to the point where he can help us and not be a lia bility to him and us, then we're going to use him. We'll see where that goes."Walker, a 5-foot-10, 218-pounder who transferred to UVa from Indiana before the 2020 season, has been ahead of schedule returning from surgery and was projected to be cl eared sometime in September. Despite practicing Monday, Walker isn't likely to play in the team's opener against Richmond, but the fifth-year senior could still be a factor early in the season. "That means he's going to be cleared for the Richmond game. It doesn't mean he's going to play," said Gaither. "But he's going to be cleared, which means we can start getting him prepared for the stretch, especially conference play." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Virginia's group of running backs is deeper than it was during the spring, and the Cavaliers could get another boost sooner than they expected. "Ronnie Walker [Jr.] looks good," UVa coach Tony Elliott said of his fifth-year running back who was putting t ogether an excellent set of practices in March before suffering a leg injury. "He's ahead of schedule," running backs coach Keith Gaither said.According to Gaither, Walker Jr. was slated for an October return, but is on track now for late Septembe r. Last season, Walker Jr. carried the ball five times for 32 yards and two scores. It was his second year with the Cavaliers after transferring from Indiana, where he showed promise as a freshman in 2018 and rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns. "He' ll still be down for fall camp," Elliott said. "He's not quite where he needs to be yet from a change-of-direction standpoint, but looks good straight ahead." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Indiana transfer running back Ronnie Walker Jr. has yet to hear back from the NCAA on the second part of his appeal process to earn a waiver for immediate eligibility. Mendenhall believes the Virginia native, who said he joined UVa in part to be closer t o his mother, deserves the waiver. Virginia's head coach remained calm, but shared his frustrations Monday with the lack of guidance from the NCAA on the situation. "It seems like our urgency is more than maybe that of who we're working with," Mendenhall said. Even without the running back, UVa's offense has performed well through two games. The Cavaliers are averaging 167.5 yards per game on the ground, up about 45 yards from last year's season average. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

While spring practices remain postponed due to COVID-19, the college football news cycle keeps chugging along. The Virginia football team added Ronnie Walker Jr., a transfer running back from Indiana, on Friday. He adds depth and talent to a position gro up in need of both. The Cavaliers also have a few players with the potential to be selected in next week's NFL Draft. Without spring ball, replacing those impact players could certainly be a challenge. Walker Jr. joins Wayne Taulapapa and Mike Hollins in the running back room. Last season, quarterback Bryce Perkins handled the bulk of the rushing load. With Perkins graduated and heading to the NFL, Virginia likely needs better rushing production from Taulapapa, Hollins and potentially Walker Jr. to find offensive balance. - Charlottesville Daily Progress
