Asa Martin, Troy, Player News

Former Auburn running backs Asa Martin and Jordon Ingram have joined the football program at Troy, a school spokesman confirmed to AL.com. Both Martin and Ingram are enrolled in spring semester classes and will participate in spring practice for the Troj ans, the 2022 Sun Belt Conference champions. Martin has one year of eligibility remaining, while Ingram has three. Martin - who spent the last four seasons at Memphis - signed with Auburn in the 2018 class after being name Mr. Football by the Alabama Spo rts Writers Association at Decatur's Austin High School the previous fall. A four-star prospect coming out of high school, he played in five games mostly on special teams as a true freshman. Then-Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn later admitted the Tigers pl anned to play Martin in only four games that season to preserve his redshirt year, but staffers apparently miscounted and played him in five. Martin transferred to Miami, but never played for the Hurricanes before transferring a second time to Memphis. A fter sitting out the 2019 season under NCAA transfer rules, Martin played three seasons as part of Memphis' running back rotation. He rushed for a career-best 435 yards and seven touchdowns and also caught 36 passes this past season for the Tigers, and e ntered the portal as a graduate transfer two weeks ago. - Birmingham News

Memphis running back Asa Martin has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, according to On3's Matt Zenitz. The senior back posted 435 yards on the ground this season to go along with eight total touchdowns in 2022. Not coincidentally, the move comes just afte r the Tigers landed another running back out of the portal in Mississippi State's Ke'Travion Hargrove. Martin announced in December that he would return to Memphis in 2023. Martin played high school football at Decatur (AL) Austin, where he was a four-st ar prospect. He was the No. 174 overall recruit in the 2018 cycle. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Another senior for Memphis football will be back for a final season as running back Asa Martin announced he'll return for the 2023 season. Martin made his decision on the latest episode "Inside Memphis Athletics" podcast Sunday. He was eligible for an ad ditional season along with every college athlete who played in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Martin is second on the Tigers with 392 yards rushing and eight touchdowns while also being third with 722 all-purpose yards ahead of the First Responder Bo wl against Utah State on Dec. 27 (2:15 p.m., ESPN). He also shares the team lead with Eddie Lewis with five plays from scrimmage that went at least 30 yards. He's the fifth Memphis player to announce a return next season after quarterback Seth Henigan, t ight end Caden Prieskorn, defensive lineman Jaylon Allen and linebacker Geoffrey Cantin-Arku. Senior receiver Eddie Lewis has yet to decide but offered a hint by not participating in Senior Day activities this season. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

When the sophomore - a rare two-time FBS transfer (Auburn to Miami to Memphis) - takes the field for the first time as a Tiger, it will be his first game action in almost two years. Although he's listed as the No. 2 running back on Silverfield's Week 1 d epth chart (behind Clark), Jeremy Perkins (who coached Martin at Austin High School in Decatur, Alabama) said he's got enough versatility to fill a number of roles. Which is a good thing because the Tigers planned to use Gainwell as more of an all-purpos e back than they did a year ago. "I think Memphis got a steal with him," Perkins said of the former Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year and Mr. Football. "For us, he returned kicks, split out and played some receiver. He was our main running back. He eve n played some wildcat quarterback. He has great hands, great vision and is very explosive." - Memphis Commercial Appeal

The Asa Martin era for the Miami Hurricanes might be coming to an end just six months after it began. Martin, who transferred to Miami in January after a frustrating freshman season with the Auburn Tigers, has entered his name into the transfer portal, a Hurricanes athletic spokesman confirmed Monday.A former four-star prospect in the 247Sports.com composite rankings for the Class of 2018, Martin announced his transfer to Miami during the early signing period last year and arrived in Coral Gables in January. Martin was going to have sit out the 2019 season, and coach Manny Diaz said in March the Hurricanes were not putting in a waiver requesting immediate eligibility for the tailback. - Miami Herald
