2022 OUTLAND TROPHY FINALIST (OUTSTANDING INTERIOR LINEMAN): Calijah Kancey, Pittsburgh,...In addition to the Outland, Kancey is also a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, presented to the nation's top defensive player. He is the only player selected a finalist for both the Nagurski and Outland honors by the FWAA. Kancey is the first Pitt player to be named a finalist for the Outland Trophy since 2013, when defensive tackle Aaron Donald became the Panthers' second winner of the coveted award. (Donald also won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy that season.) Pitt's initial Outland Trophy winner was offensive tackle Mark May in 1980. The 6-foot, 280-pound Kancey (Miami, Fla./Miami Northwestern) has been one of college football's most dominant players regardless of position this season. He compiled 31 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks in 11 games played. - Pittsburgh Football

Pittsburgh defensive tackle Calijah Kancey, the ACC's Defensive Player of the Year, will miss the team's bowl game due to injury. Kancey, a junior, made the announcement in an Instagram post on Friday. Kancey sustained an injury in the second half of a win over Duke on Nov. 19 and did not travel with the team for a victory at Miami on Nov. 26. "Thanks to the best trainers in the country at Pitt," Kancey said. "I know they will help me get back to 100% soon." Kancey collected 7 1/2 sacks and 14 1/2 tackles for a loss in 11 games this season for the Panthers (8-4).

He is the first Pitt player to win the conference's highest defensive honor since Aaron Donald in 2013. The 6-foot-1, 280-pound player has been coy about his intentions next year, though the Miami native likely has worked himself up NFL draft boards over the last three months. Kancey did say he plans to help teammates prepare for whatever bowl they might be headed to. Pitt did not defend the ACC title it won a year ago but finished strong, winning four straight to end the season to come in second to North Carolina in the ACC's Coastal Division. - AP College Football

2022 BRONKO NAGURSKI TROPHY FINALIST: Calijah Kancey, DT, Pitt (6-0, 280, Jr., Miami, Fla.): Kancey has already topped his 2021 statistical numbers in leading the Panthers' defense with 14.0 tackles for loss (t-11th in FBS) and 7.0 sacks (t-26th). His career highs of 3.0 sacks (vs. Virginia 11/12) and 3.5 TFL's (vs. Georgia Tech 10/1) have come within Pitt's last six games. Kancey - pronounced Kah-LIE-jah and rhymes with 'Elijah' - is seventh on the Panthers' defense with 29 total tackles with 17 solos. Bolstered by Kancey, Pitt leads the nation in sacks with 3.7 per game. Pitt already boasts a defensive tackle as a former Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner - Aaron Donald won the award in 2013 and is the only Pitt player to reach finalist status. Three of Pitt's five FWAA All-Americans over the past four seasons - Jaylen Twyman on the 2019 second team, Rashad Weaver on the 2020 first team and now Kancey - have come from its defensive line. - Football Writers Association of America

Even if you put the statistics aside and just watch Pitt's film from last year, it's obvious that No. 8 - the other No. 8 - was Pitt's most impactful defensive player. Calijah Kancey made a routine of speeding past linemen, barreling over running backs in pass protection and sending quarterbacks into a new dimension. "The guy is magical. No matter what position he's in, no matter the call, he always wants to make a play. And he usually does," middle linebacker SirVocea Dennis said. "Being behind him, it's like I'm watching greatness right in front of my eyes. It's fun." "His quickness, man, sometimes I can't catch him," Pitt offensive tackle Carter Warren said on their reps in practice. "Sometimes I'm asking (left guard) Marcus (Minor) for help. Calijah is the real deal. He puts in the work, day in and day out. He's the last one in the weight room and the last one on the field. He does the little things you need to do to be where he wants to be in life." That was the common thread speaking to players and coaches on both sides of the ball on Monday: Kancey's work ethic and focus is among the best in the building.

That approach has made his attention-filled summer easier to manage. Partridge acknowledged there's a delicate balance between confidence and cockiness after the type of year Kancey had. The coaching staff emphasizes that preseason accolades don't mean anything unless you work to make them a postseason reality. Kancey has taken that message to heart. "The watch lists don't mean nothing to me," the fourth-year player said. "It's all about getting better and getting ready for the first game. It's really not that important if you're not on the watch lists at the end of the season." - Pittsburgh Post Gazette

2022 PRESEASON OUTLAND TROPHY WATCHLIST: DT Calijah Kancey, Pitt,...The 6-foot, 280-pound disruptive force helped the Panthers win their first outright conference title in program history with several big plays in ACC games, including sacks versus Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Virginia. Kancey remarkably recorded a TFL in eight consecutive games down the stretch for Pitt through the ACC Championship Game against Wake Forest and forced a fumble against Clemson. Kancey's combination of quickness and power has drawn comparisons to another former Pitt standout defensive tackle: three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald, who won both the Outland and Nagurski after his outstanding senior season for the Panthers in 2013. - Pitt Football

Last season was Pittsburgh defensive lineman Calijah Kancey's first as a consistent starter and he delivered, earning first-team All-ACC honors and even a nod from the Associated Press' All-American third team. The defensive tackle led the Panthers with 13 tackles for loss and finished second in sacks with seven. If he can build on that disruption with another season of starting experience under his belt, he will certainly grab the attention of the NFL's shot-callers. - PittsburghPanthers.com
