Travis Dye, Southern California, Player News

2022 ALL-PAC-12 CONFERENCE FOOTBALL SECOND TEAM: RB Travis Dye, R-Sr., USC,...Dye was one of the most dominant backs in the nation this season. He rushed for 884 yards on 145 carries (6.1 avg.) for 9 TDs. Prior to his season-ending injury in the Colorado game, Dye had eight consecutive games with a rushing TD. The last Trojan with a rushing TD in 8 or more consecutive games in 1 season was Marcus Allen in 1981 when he scored a rushing TD in 9 consecutive games. After transferring from Oregon, Dye arrived at Troy as an immediate leader and was the heartbeat of the team this season. - USC Football

Southern California running back Travis Dye has been taken from the Coliseum field on a cart after injuring his left leg during the No. 8 Trojans' game against Colorado on Friday night. Dye grabbed his left leg immediately after getting tackled awkwardly in the second quarter. He stayed down for several minutes while an air cast was affixed to his leg, and the entire USC sideline came out to gather around the cart before it left the field. Dye has been the heart of USC's ground game in his first season at the school, playing a major role in its transformation from a four-win program last year into a College Football Playoff contender. He is the Pac-12's second-leading rusher with 884 yards, and he had scored a touchdown in each of the Trojans' previous eight games. Dye is a Southern California native who left Oregon to play closer to home this season after a four-year career with the Ducks. USC scored shortly after Dye's injury on a 32-yard TD pass from Caleb Williams to Brenden Rice. The Trojans led 23-3. - AP College Football

ESPN TOP 100 PRESEASON 2022 CFB PLAYERS (Selected Aug. 17): No. 56. Travis Dye, RB, USC, Senior. Notable 2021 stats: 1,271 yards, 16 TDs. Last year's ranking: NR. Through injuries and inconsistent quarterback play, Dye was Oregon's metronome last season. Now at USC this year, Dye will be an ideal No. 1 back as a runner and a pass-catcher. And though he's a classic example of substance over flash, it feels like there's a more explosive version of him that could be unlocked by playing in a Lincoln Riley offense next to Caleb Williams. - ESPN.com

Travis Dye is finally a USC Trojan, after four years as an Oregon Duck and a few months of mixed emotions within the process of change. The puzzle is why it had to take four years for the former Norco High standout to find his way back home. The Trojans - the Clay Helton Trojans - certainly had their chance to recruit him. Dye was an All-CIF Division 2 performer as a runner, receiver and returner at Norco in 2017, and he was that season's Big VIII Offensive Player of the Year in a league that features perennial power Corona Centennial, a school that has sent multiple stars to USC including current Trojans Korey Foreman, Gary Bryant Jr. and Tuasivi Nomura. So, Dye was asked last week, how hard did the Trojans try to recruit him out of Norco? "Not at all," he said.

Did he want them to? "Of course," he said. "I was always a big USC fan. My older brother (Tony, a safety) went to UCLA (2008-11), and so it would have been sweet from the jump to come to USC. But I was never a highly recruited running back coming out of high school. I had two offers, Oregon and New Mexico State, and I wasn't going to go play for New Mexico State, no disrespect." Danna Dye, Travis' mother - and an athletic trainer at Corona Centennial, before taking a leave of absence this school year to more closely follow not only Travis but middle brother Troy Dye, a linebacker with the Minnesota Vikings - noted that USC recruited Troy only late in the game, and he wound up playing at Oregon from 2016-19. And her thought was that USC not recruiting Travis out of high school, while frustrating, was probably for the best. "I'm not going to say I was sad that they didn't recruit him because I was not very impressed with the previous staff," she said in a phone conversation this week. - Orange County Register

2022 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Travis Dye (Sr.), USC,...A fifth-year senior, running back Travis Dye has a degree from Oregon, where he initially enrolled after graduating high school a year early (2018). In his four-year career with the Ducks (2018-21), Dye appeared in 48 games (with 19 starts), he ran for 3,111 yards (fifth most in school history) on 521 carries (6.0 avg) with 21 TDs, caught 83 passes for 869 yards (10.5 avg) with 8 TDs, returned 15 kickoffs for 305 yards (20.3 avg), had 5 punt returns for 52 yards (10.4 avg), made 2 tackles and was 0-of-1 passing. He had 7 100-yard rushing games and 4,337 all-purpose yards in his career. Most of his male relatives played football, baseball or hockey, including brother Troy (Oregon linebacker), brother Tony (at UCLA and Cincinnati Bengals, Junior Olympics), brother Jordan (wide receiver, Sterling College) and father, Mark, (football at San Jose State, baseball in Houston Astros system). So of course Travis will play another year at USC just to keep the family in the game. - USC Football

Travis Dye became the first player in Football Bowl Subdivision history to score touchdowns on four consecutive carries and No. 10 Oregon overcame an early 14-point deficit to beat UCLA 34-31 on Saturday. Anthony Brown had 381 yards of total offense for the Ducks (6-1, 3-1 Pac-12) against the Bruins (5-3, 3-2). Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said that Dye was questionable before the game due to migraines, but was able to give it a go. "They all just rallied around him and showed belief," Cristobal said. "It was a great game and really hard fought. There were big plays all over the place." Dye - who finished with 35 yards on 14 carries - also became the seventh Oregon running back since 2000 with at least four rushing touchdowns in a game.

Before Dye's record day, six players shared the mark with TDs on three consecutive carries, including Illinois' Howard Griffith and Virginia's Tiki Barber. Cal's Joe Ayoob was the last to accomplish it on Sept. 23, 2005, against New Mexico State. Oregon fell behind 14-0 during the first quarter before scoring on five of its next six drives. Dye had 5 yards on four carries in the first quarter before scoring on runs of 1 and 4 yards to tie it at 14. The Ducks trailed 17-14 at halftime, but Dye would score from 1 and 5 yards in the third quarter to give Oregon a 27-17 advantage. Brown was 29 of 39 passing for 296 yards, completing passes to 11 players. He also had six carries for 85 yards. His 43-yard TD run on a quarterback draw extended the Ducks' lead to 34-17 before the Bruins rallied. - Oregon/AP College Football

Oregon running backs Travis Dye and CJ Verdell are on the Doak Walker Award watch list. Initially omitted from the preseason watch list for the award, presented annually to the nation's top running back, the Ducks duo were added later Wednesday, per UO. It's the third straight year Verdell has been on the watch list and first such honor for Dye. Dye led Oregon with 443 rushing yards and 239 receiving yards in 2020. He has 1,840 career rushing yards, 467 receiving yards and 11 total touchdowns. - The Oregonian

Dye had 64 carries for a team-leading 443 yards and a touchdown last fall but it was his nine catches for an obscene 239 yards and four scores that separated him from most any other back in the Pac-12. Getting Dye a head start on routes of the backfield was clearly effective and offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead did so in a variety of ways to create favorable matchups last season. That should only increase next year. "Coach Moorhead used the phrase, 'It's time to take the training wheels off this year,'" Dye said. "I'm very excited; I cannot wait. He's utilizing me really well, the way I want to be utilized and it's going to be a really fun season." With Verdell likely getting a bigger share of carries at full health and Sean Dollars and Trey Benson also likely to see more reps to make up for the loss of Cyrus Habibi-Likio, the proportion of work Dye gets in the fall will be of note. He's clearly an effective weapon, it's a matter of what the balance is for carries and pass protection for the entire group. - The Oregonian
