Andre Szmyt knocked in five field goals, including the 31-yard game-winner with just over a minute left, and Syracuse held off Virginia's second-half comeback to beat the Cavaliers 22-20 on Friday night. Syracuse led 16-0 at halftime, but Virginia record ed three second-half touchdowns to take a 20-19 lead with six minutes remaining in the game. The Orange (4-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) won their first four for the first time since 2018 despite committing their first four turnovers of the season. B rennan Armstrong threw for 138 yards and a 4-yard touchdown to Lavel Davis Jr. with 5:51 remaining for Virginia. Syracuse responded with a 62-yard drive to retake the lead on Szmyt's final field goal. Virginia's final drive resulted in a turnover on down s. The matchup reunited two of Syacuse's first-year assistants, Robert Anae and Jason Beck, with their old squad.Anae and Beck coached at Virginia (2-2, 0-1 ACC) for the past five seasons before joining Dino Babers' staff this offseason. Syracuse started the game strong, with Trebor Pena returning the opening kickoff 57 yards into Virginia territory, and the Orange punching it in five plays later with Garrett Shrader's 17-yard rushing touchdown. Virginia kicker Brendan Farrell missed first-quarte r field goal attempts from 51 and 49 yards, respectively. The second miss came after the Cavaliers had taken over at the Orange's 37-yard line following a Sean Tucker fumble. For the second straight week, Tucker was unable to find many openings, finishin g with 60 yards rushing on 21 attempts. UVA got back in the game early in the second half when Armstrong pitched to Thompson at the 1-yard line for a touchdown. The Cavaliers, trailing 16-6, wanted to attempt a 2-point conversion, but an illegal substitu tion penalty forced them to kick the extra point instead. - Syracuse/AP College Football

Syracuse place-kicker Andre Szmyt is returning in 2022 for his final year of eligibility. Szmyt made the announcement Saturday in a post on Twitter. "It's too hard to walk away with a year of eligibility left and that feeling like there's unfinished busi ness with this group. I'm looking to walk off like the year I walked on," Szmyt wrote. In four seasons, Szymt has converted 65 of 79 field goals and his 1.6 field goals per game is the top mark in school history. Szmyt originally intended to forgo the extra season grant ed by the NCAA. Andre Szmyt kicked the game-winning 35-yard field goal with no time on the clock as Syracuse used a late turnover to defeat Liberty 24-21 on Friday night. The Syracuse defense came up with the only turnover of the game just when the Orange needed it most . After forcing Liberty quarterback Malik Willis into fumbling the ball with just under four minutes remaining, Szmyt converted the turnover into the game-winning field goal seven plays later. Szmyt's kick was the Orange's first game-winning field in a g ame's final minute since 2015 and handed the Flames (3-1) their first loss this season. The Syracuse defense couldn't stop Willis for most of the game. Willis had shredded Syracuse for 205 yards passing and three touchdowns. He had rallied the Flam es from a 21-7 third-quarter deficit to knot the contest at 21-all less than a minute into the fourth quarter. After Liberty had stopped Syracuse for its third consecutive 3-and-out, the Flames looked primed to claim the victory after taking possession a t their own 27-yard line with just over four minutes remaining. But Syracuse defenders Cody Roscoe and Marlowe Wax forced Willis to cough up the ball as he rolled out to pass and the Orange took over on the Flames' 30-yard line. Syracuse maneuvered the b all into position, eating up the clock as well as all of Liberty's timeouts. After Syracuse's Garrett Shrader gained 10 crucial yards on 3rd down quarterback keeper to get the ball to the 16-yard line, Orange coach Dino Babers let the clock tick down to 1 second before calling timeout and sending Szmyt onto the field. - Syracuse/AP College Football

It's going to be a rough summer for Syracuse football in the preseason prognostication space. The team is coming off a one-win season. The magazines and national experts have Syracuse near or at the bottom of the ACC - again - with few players earning pr eseason recognition. Phil Steele's preseason all-ACC team features six Syracuse players, headlined by kicker Andre Szmyt, a first-team pick on special teams. That's the same number of selections SU had going into the 2018 season, when it won 10 games aft er being picked to finish last.If Syracuse is going to repeat a similar turnaround this fall, it's going to come off the backs of players nobody thinks measures up to its conference brethren. Syracuse coach Dino Babers thinks the season hinges on the play of his linemen who aren't getting any conference recognition. The sixth-year coach said retaining five senior linemen on the offensive and defensive lines was huge after the NCAA granted unusual eligibility relief amid the coronavirus pandemic. "It's the key to the season to give us a chance," Babers said last month during an in-house interview for donors. "We needed the big guys to stay around." - The Post-Standard
