2022 PRESEASON CHUCK BEDNARIK AWARD WATCH LIST: Tyree Wilson, Texas Tech, Senior LB,...Wilson developed into a key piece of the Texas Tech defense in his second year as a Red Raider in 2021, setting the tone as the team leader for both tackles for loss and sacks a year ago. He finished with 38 tackles on the season (26 solo), with 13.5 for a loss and 7.0 sacks marking easily the most productive season of his collegiate career thus far. He was named an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection by the conference coaches at the conclusion of the regular season and went on to earn the Defensive MVP of the AutoZone Liberty Bowl and was recognized on the Associated Press All-Bowl Team for his performance in the Red Raiders' bowl game versus Mississippi State. - Texas Tech Football

When state laws and the NCAA made it legal last year for college athletes to profit off their name, image and likeness, a University of Miami supporter fired one of the first attention-getting shots. Dan Lambert offered $500 a month to any Hurricanes scholarship football player in exchange for promoting the American Top Team mixed martial arts academy he founded, an annual outlay of more than $500,000 if everyone opted in. Now Texas Tech football players can sign up to make four times that amount.

The Matador Club, a non-profit collective organized by Texas Tech donors, plans this week to sign 100 Red Raiders football players each to one-year, $25,000 contracts. Cody Campbell, a founding member of the Matador Club board of directors, said all 85 scholarship players and 15 of the top walk-ons will be covered under the agreements. In return, they'll be expected to do community service and charitable work around Lubbock and, in the future, possibly other West Texas cities. Campbell said payments to players will be made monthly beginning the first week of August, and the community service endeavors will continue throughout the next year. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

Tech fans watched Tyree Wilson look like a man among boys in the first game of his Tech career, against Texas in the 2020 conference opener, and they saw him flash dominance again in the last game of the 2021 season when he was named the Red Raiders' defensive outstanding player of the game. They just need to see the dominance on a week-in, week-out basis. NFL scouts will be paying close attention to Wilson this year, his fourth season in college, so this should be the year he puts it all together. No reason he can't be the first Tech player with double-digit sacks since Pete Robertson in 2014. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

Poised for a 2022 standout season: Tyree Wilson started all 13 games at defensive end last season, and led the team with seven sacks and 13 1/2 tackles for loss. The 6-foot-6, 275-pound Wilson will now get a standing start as an outside linebacker. New coach Joey McGuire said Wilson will be on the edge more, giving the Red Raiders a chance to best utilize his speed and pass-rushing abilities. - AP College Football

When he was a high-school senior two years ago in East Texas and sorting through scholarship offers from more than 20 FBS programs, Tyree Wilson never pictured himself playing for Texas Tech. But Tech coach Matt Wells and defensive line coach Paul Randolph changed Wilson's mind about that this off-season when the big defensive end became disgruntled at Texas A&M and considered alternatives. The Red Raiders are glad he did. The 6-foot-6, 280-pound sophomore showed Saturday in only glimpses how big an impact he can make on their defensive front. In Tech's 63-56 overtime loss to No. 8 Texas, Wilson registered a sack, helped cause one and was credited with a quarterback pressure on another play. His combination of power and agility gave Texas offensive tackles problems.

"We knew what we were getting once we got him to commit to coming here," defensive coordinator Keith Patterson said. "It's going to be exciting to watch his development, but he is definitely going to be a guy that we can impact the quarterback with and do some things as we move forward." Wilson graduated two years ago from New London West Rusk, located roughly between and about a half-hour each from Longview and Tyler. College Station is only about three hours from Wilson's hometown, and he spent two years at Texas A&M, redshirting in 2018 and playing in 12 games last year. He said he left the program because of "issues with the training staff," but declined to elaborate. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

Sophomore defensive end Tyree Wilson has been granted an NCAA waiver that makes the former Texas A&M transfer immediately eligible to play for Texas Tech. Texas Tech announced the waiver Wednesday, four days after its season-opening win over Houston Baptist. Wilson will have three seasons of eligibility remaining at the Big 12 school. The 6-foot-6, 280-pound Wilson played 12 games as a redshirt freshman for Texas A&M last season, when he had 12 tackles. He entered the transfer portal last spring, and got to Lubbock midway through preseason camp last month. - AP College Football

Texas Tech coach Matt Wells continues to beef up his roster with transfers. On Monday, Tech announced the addition of Tyree Wilson, a former blue-chip defensive end who made his college debut last season with Texas A&M. The 6-foot-6, 280-pound sophomore from New London West Rusk played in 12 games last season for the Aggies as a redshirt freshman. He was credited with 12 tackles, including three tackles for loss and 1 1/2 sacks. Wilson had his name put into the transfer portal in February. Tech will apply for an NCAA waiver for immediate eligibility on Wilson's behalf. He began practicing with the team on Friday. Unlike in recent years when early portions of most preseason workouts were open, the Red Raiders' practices are closed this year as a precaution during the COVID-19 pandemic. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal
