Logan Bonner threw three touchdown passes, Calvin Tyler Jr. added 161 yards rushing and Utah State defeated Connecticut 31-20 in a season-opener on Saturday. Trailing 14-7 late in the second quarter, Utah State scored 17 points in the final 3:42 to take a 24-14 halftime lead. Robert Briggs scored on a 23-yard run, Bonner connected with Justin McGriff for a 14-yard score and Connor Coles hit a 45-yard field goal. Noe Ruelas kicked field goals of 47 and 54 yards to draw UConn within 24-20 early in the fourth quarter before Bonner led a 75-yard scoring drive, capped by his 11-yard TD pass to Brian Cobbs. A diving interception by Ike Larsen on UConn's next possession helped seal the win.

Connecticut, playing its first game under coach Jim Mora after going 1-11 last season, took a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Nathan Carter rushed for 110 yards on six carries in the period but his fumble in the second quarter led to Utah State's first touchdown. He finished the half with nine carries for 130 yards and 20 for 190 for the game. Bonner finished 20-of-29 passing for 281 yards. Tyler's 161 yards came on 33 carries for Utah State.   Logan Bonner threw five touchdown passes and Utah State rolled to a 35-10 win at New Mexico State on Friday, earning a berth in the Mountain West Conference title game. The Aggies (9-3, 6-2) needed a win and San Diego State's 27-16 win over Boise State to earn the Mountain Division crown and a date with the Aztecs on Dec. 4. Utah State's only other trip to the MWC title game was in 2013. Bonner was 16 of 23 for 306 yards and became the sixth Utah State quarterback to surpass 3,000 yards. The five touchdowns gave him 32 for the season, tying the school record set by Jordan Love in 2018. In its previous five road games Utah State had to overcome a double digit deficit but with Bonner and a dominant defense, no rally was needed to finish the regular season 6-0 on the road. The defense held the Lobos to 186 yards and forced six fumbles, recovering two.

Bonner connected with Derek Wright for a 27-yard touchdown in the first quarter and threw three scoring passes in the second, the last a 76-yard hookup with Wright. Wright finished with a career high 150 yards on four catches. Jordan Nathan and Brandon Bowling had 39- and 36-yard scoring plays in the second quarter and Justin McGriff a 10-yarder in the third. Star receiver Deven Thompkins was limited to five catches for 35 yards but that was enough to give him 1,543 yards, breaking the school record of 1,531 set by Kevin Curtis in 2001. Utah State went undefeated on the road in 1907, 1911 and 1923 but those wins in total added up to just seven. - Utah State/AP College Football

Logan Bonner threw for 361 yards and four touchdowns and Utah State defeated Hawaii 45-31 on Saturday. Bonner was 21-of-30 passing and combined with Elelyon Noa's career day of 111 yards on 23 carries, the Aggies (6-2, 4-1 Mountain West Conference piled up 564 yards of total offense. Deven Thompkins hauled in seven passes for 176 yards, his sixth 100-yard game this season, the most since Kevin Curtis had seven games with 100 yards in 2002. Thompkins pushed his season yardage total to 1,099, the first 1,000 yard receiver since Curtis in 2002. Noa's short touchdown run and Justin McGriff's 34-yard touchdown reception helped Utah State to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. It was 20-10 at halftime but Bonner threw three touchdown passes in the third quarter to break it open. Chevan Cordeiro threw for 296 yards and three touchdowns for Hawaii (4-5, 1-3). Calvin Turner Jr. and Dedrick Parson combined for 15 receptions and 225 yards. - Utah State/AP College Football

Logan Bonner passed for a career-best 390 yards with four touchdowns as Utah State clawed out of an early hole to rally past North Dakota 41-24 on Friday night. Bonner more than doubled his passing yards from the 143 in Utah State's last-minute upset at Washington State last week, and matched his career high with four touchdowns. The Aggies (2-0) trailed 21-7 after North Dakota's dizzying first-quarter saw three different passers throw for touchdowns on the first three possessions. But from there, Utah State outscored North Dakota 41-3.

North Dakota's Tommy Schuster was 29-of-43 passing for 348 yards with a touchdown. Otis Weah, who posted 114 yards and three touchdowns in the season opener, was held to 47 yards on 17 carries Friday with no scores. After a field goal to open the second half, the Fighting Hawks (1-1), ranked No. 6 in the FCS coaches poll, were forced to punt away their next four possessions while Utah State went on a scoring spree. Bonner had touchdown passes of 54, 4, 75 and 41 yards. One play after his lone interception on the night led to a North Dakota field goal, Bonner found Deven Thompkins on swing pass for a one-play, 75-yard touchdown sprint up the left sideline that put the Aggies up for the first time, 27-24, just 12 seconds later. - Utah State/AP College Football

Logan Bonner threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Deven Thompkins with 11 seconds left to lift Utah State to a 26-23 victory over Washington State on Saturday night. Utah State (1-0) got the ball back on its own 22 with 3:02 left and Bonner drove them to the winning score in Blake Anderson's first game as the Aggies' coach. Bonner completed a pass to Derek Wright for a two-point conversion and the final score.

Max Borghi ran for 86 yards and a touchdown for Washington State (0-1) of the Pac-12, which finished 1-3 last year. "Food is going to taste better. Beds are gonna be softer," Anderson said after becoming the first Utah State coach in more than 40 years to win his opening game. "This is a memory I'll never forget." "I'm not surprised at all," Anderson said of the upset win. "We did not play our best football," he said. "All in all we made the plays we absolutely had to make." Anderson said the outcome did not settle the battle over who should be the team's starting quarterback. - Utah State/AP College Football

Anderson brought on his former quarterback Logan Bonner, from Arkansas State, to compete for the starting spot against returners Andrew Peasley and Cooper Legas. But Bonner has been recuperating from a broken bone in his foot all spring, Anderson said, so his inclusion into the fold will have to wait. Bonner's injury left the bulk of the quarterback minutes to Peasley and Legas, who both played well in Saturday's scrimmage. Peasley went 16 of 24 for 234 yards with one interception and threw three touchdown passes. Legas was more efficient, going 11 of 16 for 132 yards with two TD passes and no interceptions. Two other quarterbacks saw time, but Peasley and Legas seem like the current frontrunners. "Competition is still out there. We still have a lot of work to do at that position," Anderson said. "But I do think they've both improved through the course of the spring and have a good grasp of what we're wanting to do in this offense." - Salt Lake Tribune

When quarterback Logan Bonner arrives in Logan as an official member of Utah State's football program, he will be joined by a close personal friend. A week ago, Bonner announced he would be transferring from Arkansas State. Wide receiver Brandon Bowling, one of Bonner's go-to targets during the 2020 season, will also be a future Aggie. Bowling made his decision known Monday on Twitter. Bowling is a graduate transfer with one season of eligibility remaining, while Bonner has two seasons left. Both former ASU players plan on enrolling at USU for the upcoming spring semester. - Herald Journal Tribune

A few things are starting to fall into place for new Utah State head football coach Blake Anderson on the recruiting front. For starters, a quarterback Anderson knows very well will be making his way to Cache Valley. Logan Bonner, who played for Anderson at Arkansas State from 2016-20, announced his commitment to the Aggies on Tuesday on Twitter. One day later, wide receiver Deven Thompkins announced via Twitter he would be returning to USU. Thompkins played the first four games for the Aggies this past season before electing to enter the transfer portal. Both Thompkins and Bonner have two years of eligibility remaining. - Herald Journal Tribune

Junior quarterback Logan Bonner will take the first snap Saturday in Arkansas State University's season-opening matchup with Memphis, Coach Blake Anderson announced Monday. But sophomore Layne Hatcher also will see the field, Anderson said, after he started the final nine games for ASU last season when Bonner suffered a season-ending injury. Bonner and Hatcher have been battling all fall, with Anderson saying it was Bonner's job to lose. Although Bonner is the official starter, Anderson indicated that doesn't mean Hatcher won't play more in the game or start the next week.

"Logan Bonner was the starter going into fall camp and he still is. He did nothing to lose that job," Anderson said. "But we are going to play Layne Hatcher some as well. How many snaps it is, where that happens - not absolutely certain. That's still a day-to-day conversation. "So Logan Bonner is going to go out with the first [team offense] and then somewhere during the course of the game you're going to see Layne Hatcher play." Bonner started the first four games last season before hurting his throwing hand. He threw for 1,052 yards and 10 touchdowns with 1 interception. - Northwest Arkansas Times

Logan Bonner passed for 320 yards and four touchdowns and Arkansas State defeated FCS-member Southern Illinois 41-28 on Saturday. Kirk Merritt added 131 yards receiving with two touchdowns for the Red Wolves (2-2). Bonner threw three touchdown passes in the first half when, after a 14-14 tie through the first quarter, ASU scored 17 points in the second quarter for a 31-14 halftime lead. The Salukis (2-2) closed to within 10 points in the third quarter but Bonner's 89-yard hookup with Omar Bayless gave the Red Wolves a 38-21 lead.

Leading 41-28 midway through the fourth quarter, Arkansas State stopped Southern Illinois on 4th-and-goal from the ASU 5-yard line then ran the final 6:04 off the clock with an 11-play drive that reached the SIU 18 yard line.
