Lopini Katoa, Brigham Young, Player News

Lopini Katoa barreled into the end zone on a 3-yard run to lift No. 21 BYU to a 26-20 victory over No. 9 Baylor in double overtime on Saturday night. Jaren Hall threw for 261 yards and a touchdown, and added a 22-yard TD catch, to lead BYU (2-0). Chase Roberts had a career-high 122 yards and a touchdown on eight catches for the Cougars. Roberts also threw a touchdown pass to Hall in the third quarter. Blake Shapen threw for 134 yards and a touchdown while Qualan Jones added a pair of touchdown runs for Baylor. Jones and Craig Williams combined for 135 yards on 33 carries. Shapen's incompletion on fourth down in double overtime sealed the upset win for BYU. The Bears (1-1) were one of three Top 10 teams to lose on Saturday along with No. 6 Texas A&M and No. 8 Notre Dame.

Bears kicker Isaiah Hankins missed a 43-yard field goal attempt in the first overtime after missing a PAT on Baylor's only first-half touchdown. Cougars kicker Jake Oldroyd missed a 35-yard attempt with 8 seconds left in regulation and then missed from 37 yards to force a second overtime. After combining to go 3-and-out on five straight first-half drives, Baylor and BYU traded touchdowns right before halftime. The Bears jumped in front 6-3 after Jones punched it in on a 1-yard run. His touchdown capped off a 13-play, 68-yard drive where Baylor converted a pair of third downs. BYU answered with a quick strike to go back in front 10-6. The Cougars covered 75 yards in eight plays, culminating in a 20-yard touchdown pass from Hall to Chase Roberts. Hall completed five of six passes on the drive. Each play gained at least 11 yards. Both teams carried their offensive momentum into the third quarter. - BYU/AP College Football

Last year's running back group suffered a constant barrage of injuries, causing changes to the depth chart on an almost-weekly basis. That can only bode well for the 2020 season. And it served as a learning lesson to those returning. "I think it helped everybody to see you've got to be ready at any point," redshirt junior Katoa said. "Guys can get hurt, so basically you have to have a room full of guys ready to play any Saturday." Katoa is one of the top two rushers coming back and led the team in carries for a second consecutive year in 2019.

The 6-foot-1 running back posted a team-high 853 all-purpose yards last season (358 rushing yards, 288 receiving yards and 207 yards on kick returns). While Katoa loves the running back position, he also enjoys catching the ball and wants to be able to help his team any way possible. So, he hopes to be able to provide the same level of production this year. "I hope to be able to run the ball, catch the ball and just be anywhere on the field where I can make a difference. I'm definitely preparing myself to do whatever it takes to know all positions, to be able to be on the field as much as possible I want to keep that up, to be dynamic." - Salt Lake Tribune

Before 2020 spring camp was cut short by efforts to limit the spread of COVID-19, the BYU football team's one official coaching vacancy - running backs coach - was being filled on an interim basis by former star and recent graduate assistant Harvey Unga. When asked about the spot, Cougar head coach Kalani Sitake would simply say BYU was evaluating potential candidates and that Unga was in the mix to get the job. Thursday morning it finally became official. The Cougars announced in a statement that Unga has been hired as the new running backs coach.

"I am excited to announce Harvey Unga as our running backs coach," Sitake said in the press release. "Harvey is a great young coach who was an elite player for BYU and is an extremely humble person. He knows the game, relates well to the players, and has done an outstanding job the past four years on our staff. We are excited to have him step into this role, and know he will excel in helping the young men in our program learn, grow and develop." With his background growing up in Provo, playing at Timpview High School, starring at running back for BYU and then coaching at his alma mater, this appears to be a perfect fit for Unga. - Daily Herald
