2022 PRESEASON RIMINGTON TROPHY WATCHLIST: Mike Novitsky, Kansas,...Novitsky, the starter at center in all 12 games last season for the Jayhawks, was one of 40 centers nationally chosen for the watch list and one of six Big 12 centers selected. The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding center in NCAA Division I football. Novitsky, a transfer from Buffalo, was selected for the 2020 watch list with the Bulls. He then made it back-to-back appearances on the watch list last year when he was selected prior to his first season with the Jayhawks. The Victor, N.Y., native was the anchor of an offensive line that allowed just 16 sacks in 12 games last year, after surrendering 43 sacks in nine games in 2020 without Novitsky in the fold. - Kansas Football

Before Novitsky transformed into a first-team All-MAC center at UB, the prep tight end from Victor, N.Y., Leipold said, had no problem being recruited as an O-lineman, even though the coach noted it can even be hard to find high school tight ends who want to play as blockers instead of passing targets. "He's embraced it. He's got a smile on his face each and every day," Leipold said of Novitsky. The veteran center who redshirted with Buffalo in 2018 before taking over the starting center spot, Leipold added, possesses good footwork and studies the game. Those and the aforementioned attributes, according to the coach, give Novitsky the chance to be a "pretty darn good" center for the Jayhawks.

Since officially joining the roster this summer, Novitsky has impressed his new teammates. Veteran receiver Kwamie Lassiter II said Novitsky immediately stepped up and showed that he can and will be a leader for the team. KU's O-line encountered numerous issues in 2020, including a lack of continuity at center, where four different players - Adagio Lopeti, Api Mane, Chris Hughes and Garrett Jones - started at least one time in a nine-game season. Lassiter thinks Novitsky is "really helping that group out" already this summer. "He came from the offense that we're in," Lassiter said of Novitsky's experience not only with Leipold, but also offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki and O-line coach Scott Fuchs. "So I do see improvement on that O-line, and that helps a lot." - Lawrence Journal World

New Kansas football center Mike Novitsky enters the 2021 campaign as one of the top players at his position. Novitsky was named to the Rimington Trophy Watchlist on Friday, the Boomer Esiason Foundation announced. Novitsky, a redshirt junior transfer from Buffalo who arrived in Lawrence this summer, is one of 40 centers nationally to be recognized. He is one of five centers in the Big 12 to make the list along with Colin Newell of Iowa State, Oklahoma State's Danny Godlevske, Steve Avila of TCU, and Texas Tech's Dawson Deaton. Given his resume, it is no surprise that Novitsky was named to this watch list. Novitsky started 20 straight games at center for Buffalo over the 2019 and 2020 seasons and was named first-team All-MAC last year. Last season, he helped block for an offense that ranked second in the nation in rushing yards per game and allowed only one sack on the year. - Lawrence Journal World

The migration from the University at Buffalo football team continues. Three players who were on UB's roster during the 2020 season have entered the transfer portal, according to Rivals.com and 247Sports: defensive tackles Eddie Wilson and Tyrece Woods and center Mike Novitsky. The transfer portal entries follow news that several of UB's football staff members will depart, including linebackers coach/co-defensive coordinator Chris Simpson and defensive coordinator/safeties coach Brian Borland. Multiple sources told The News on Monday that at least four assistant coaches are expected to leave UB for Kansas and join Leipold's staff, either as assistant coaches or in support roles, and Yahoo! Sports reported that as many as seven could join Leipold's staff at Kansas.

Wilson confirmed in a post on social media Tuesday morning that he has entered the transfer portal. Novitsky was UB's starting center the last two seasons, on an offensive line that gave up one sack in seven games in 2020. Novitsky, a 6-foot-5, 295-pound redshirt sophomore from Victor, was a first-team All-MAC selection who helped UB finish second in the country in rushing offense (287.43 yards per game) and fifth in scoring offense (43.4 points per game). - Buffalo News
