In spending the early part of the summer in 2020 working on the family ranch in Florida, Carson Wells kept in shape and gained some strength in preparation for his junior year. Colorado's top outside linebacker gained something else, too. "I finally got some confidence back last year," he said. "And I just keep building off of that." After battling a leg infection during his redshirt year in 2017, Wells had a good 2018, with 4.5 sacks. In 2019, he missed two games with injury and racked up 57 tackles, b ut only one sack. Last year, Wells exploded, leading the country in tackles for loss per game (2.67).Despite CU playing only six games during the COVID-19 pandemic-shortened season, Wells had 16 tackles for loss, including 6.5 sacks. "I knew I had put in the work, especially over quarantine (in 2020)," he said. "I knew I put in the work and it finally showed off. Just doing work in the weight room, doing work studying the film. I was a much smarter player last year and I feel like that was a big difference." This season, the 6-foot-4, 250-pound Wells is aiming to be even better. "There's always room to get better each game," he said. "I'm my hardest critic so I get back in there the next day watching film. There's always something to improve on, so there's still room to get better." - Daily Camera

Members of the media that cover Pac-12 football have projected Colorado for a fifth-place finish in the South division, while several Buffaloes earned preseason all-conference honors. During the COVID-19 pandemic-shortened 2020 season - head coach Karl D orrell's first with the program - the Buffs went 4-2, including 3-1 in Pac-12 games. Dorrell was named conference coach of the year. For the second year in a row, Southern California is projected to win the South division, with Oregon picked to win the N orth. Oregon was the overwhelming favorite to win the Pac-12 title game, as well. Also in a vote by media, CU running back Jarek Broussard and linebacker Nate Landman were voted preseason first-team All-Pac-12. Broussard is the reigning Pac-12 offensive player of the year. - Daily Camera

Although Colorado played just six football games in 2020, outside linebacker Carson Wells did things that hadn't been done in 30 years by a Buffalo. Wells led the country in tackles for loss per game, at 2.67. He had at least three in four consecutive ga mes, becoming the first CU player to do that since College Football Hall of Famer Alfred Williams in 1990. Then, Wells capped his year with 2.5 tackles for loss in the Valero Alamo Bowl. Despite the dominance, Wells didn't collect many postseason honors - he was named All-Pac-12 honorable mention - but his team recognizes his value."Obviously, you start this deal off with Carson Wells, a guy who had a really great season in an abbreviated year," defensive coordinator Chris Wilson said. "Really go od scheme fit for us." Wells suits the Buffs' scheme because he knows the playbook and puts in the work to be ready on game days. Following a dominant 2020, Wells hasn't backed off. "He's only improved this offseason, especially in the weight room," Wils on said. "He had a really good spring, so I really believe just that his continued growth and the way he works and how important it is to him, he puts us in a great position to play well at that position." - Daily Camera

Last week, Colorado head football coach Karl Dorrell said the Buffaloes' revamped defense could give the outside linebackers an opportunity to "pin your ears back and go." A smile came across the face of Carson Wells when he was asked about that comment. "It definitely opens it up for us to make more plays," said Wells, a junior outside linebacker. "We've just got to have that dog mindset in our play every play. This defense is really designed for us to make plays. I don't want to get into it too much b ut it's designed for us to make plays and we've just got to go out there and execute."Wells is coming off a dominant 2020 season in which he led the country with 2.67 tackles for loss per game. Despite playing just six games, he tied for third nat ionally with 16 total TFLs. Nationally, he was one of only 15 players with at least 14 TFLs, and the others each played at least nine games. A 6-foot-4, 250-pound fourth-year junior, Wells is the unquestioned leader of the outside linebacker crew, but it 's a group with intriguing possibilities. "It is a position that we feel confident that we can be very productive and mainly because of what Carson is able to do with his experience," Dorrell said. "We know that he's going to generate some plays on his s ide of it." - Daily Camera

Landman and Wells combined for 27 tackles, 2.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss and Arizona. Landman finished with 16 tackles, one sack and 3.5 tackles for loss. Wells had a career-high 11 tackles, along with four tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. The number s are eye-popping, but not unusual. A week earlier, in a 20-10 win against San Diego State, the duo combined for 16 tackles, eight tackles for loss and three sacks (all by Landman). Landman was named Walter Camp and Bronko Nagurski national defensive pla yer of the week and Pac-12 defensive player of the week after the San Diego State win. Wells was worthy, too. While Landman continues his exceptional career, Wells, is emerging as a star. He has 11 tackles for loss in the last three games. To put t hat number in perspective, it would have been enough to lead the team for the entire season in nine of the previous 11 years. Led by Landman and Wells, the Buffs have taken dramatic steps forward on defense. In the first two games, CU gave up an average of 37.0 points and 437.5 yards per game. - Daily Camera

During the past month, as Colorado football players have been learning remotely and working out on their own at home, Carson Wells has been staying in shape by working on the family farm in Florida. "He's farm strength strong, so he'll be fine," CU stren gth and conditioning coordinator Drew Wilson said of Wells. For now, the Buffs are happy to see Wells handling cattle on the farm, but they'd love to see him wreaking havoc on quarterbacks soon. The spread of COVID-19 has created stay-at-home orders arou nd the country and uncertainty about the 2020 football season, but CU continues to prepare and BuffZone is previewing each position group for the Buffs. In this installment, we look at the outside linebackers.Leading the group is Wells, who is by far the most experienced outside linebacker on the team after the Buffs lost three key contributors to graduation. Five of the eight outside linebackers on the roster have never played a defensive snap for the Buffs and two others - senior Jash Allen and junior Jamar Montgomery - have combined for 53 career snaps at CU. Wells, meanwhile, is one of the top players on the Buffs' defense. He's played 913 snaps over the past two seasons and finished 2019 ranking fifth on the team in tackles (57). - Daily Ca mera
