Clayton Tune connected with Nathaniel Dell for a 12-yard touchdown with 20 seconds remaining, and Houston rallied from a 13-point deficit to beat Louisiana-Lafayette 23-16 in the Independence Bowl on Friday. The TD pass was Tune's third of the game and 4 0th of the season, tying him with Western Kentucky's Austin Reed for the most in the nation. Before the winning throw, he completed a 41-yard pass to KeSean Carter on third-and-30 to move Houston into Ragin' Cajuns territory. The Cougars (8-5) never led until that late touchdown as Tune heated up amid unseasonably cold temperatures in northwest Louisiana. It was 25 degrees at kickoff, with a wind chill of 12 degrees. Louisiana-Lafayette (6-7) led 13-0 midway through the second quarter and 16-6 at halfti me. Tune, who finished 19 of 28 for 216 yards, led Houston on a 13-play, 70-yard drive to open the second half and hit Dell for a 2-yard touchdown that made it 16-13.Clinging to a three-point lead, Louisiana stuffed Houston on fourth-and-short at the Ragin’ Cajuns 5-yard line midway through the third quarter, but the Cougars eventually tied the game on Kyle Ramsey's 19-yard field early in the fourth. The Ragin' Cajuns wasted a chance to retake the lead when running back Chris Smith fumbled at t he Houston 4. Louisiana-Lafayette, located three hours south of Shreveport, took the opening kick and orchestrated a 15-play, 75-yard drive that ended when tight end Johnny Lumpkin made a dazzling touchdown catch in the corner of the end zone. The Cajuns got three field goals in the first half from by Kenneth Almendares (42, 42, and 22 yards). Chandler Fields finished 17 of 25 passing for 169 yards and a touchdown. Tune's first TD toss was a 33-yarder to Carter in the second quarter. "I cannot express our true appreciation. It's incredibly impactful and it makes a very definitive statement about where we're going and what we're doing." The gift is part of the athletic department's Houston RISE cam paign that aims to raise $150 million to upgrade and build facilities as the Cougars enter the Big 12 in July 2023. Tune enters his fifth and final season in search of an elusive conference title - and to join some of the Cougars' all-time quarterback greats in the record book. With 7,920 yards, Tune is on pace to join Case Keenum (19,217) and Kevin Kolb (12,964) as t he only 10,000-yard passers in school history. His 64 passing touchdowns are currently fifth. Perhaps, most importantly, with the Cougars expected to be among the preseason favorites in the AAC, Tune has a chance to become just the sixth quarterback (Dan ny Davis, Delrick Brown, Chuck Clements, Kolb and Greg Ward Jr.) in the past 46 years to lead the Cougars to a conference title.Tune is coming off his best season with career highs in passing yards (3,544), touchdowns (30), completions (287) and c ompletion percentage (68.3 percentage) to lead UH to the AAC championship game and just the third 12-win season in program history. What changed? A hamstring injury. Specifically, Tune developed more of a pocket presence, relying more on a backfield led by Alton McCaskill and 1,300-yard receiver Nathaniel Dell, as he recovered from the injury suffered in Week 2. Rather than rely on instincts and athleticism, Tune began to look at defenses differently and become more comfortable at calling plays at the l ine. - Houston Chronicle

Clayton Tune and the Houston Cougars punctuated an impressive season with a win in Southeastern Conference country. Jake Herslow caught a 26-yard, go-ahead touchdown pass from Tune with 3:27 left to help lift No. 21 Houston to a 17-13 victory over Auburn on Tuesday in the Birmingham Bowl in front of a mostly orange-and-blue crowd at Protective Stadium. The Cougars (12-2) marched 80 yards in eight plays to cap the third season in program history with at least 12 wins. They snapped a four-game bowl losing streak and won 12 of their final 13 games, the only loss after the opener coming to No. 4 Cincinnati in the American Athletic Conference championship game.Houston coach Dana Holgorsen said this win was similar to "some other ones that we've had t his year." "Just a bunch of guys that fight hard and win," Holgorsen said. "Basically, winning this game solidified this 2021 football team at the University of Houston as a great football team." The Tigers (6-7) went in the opposite direction at the end of coach Bryan Harsin's first season. They ended with five straight losses for the first time in 71 years and dropped their third bowl game in a row. Harsin was already looking ahead to, he hopes, better things. "Nobody's going to go in there and just h ang their head and say, ‘Well, this is just how it is,' " Harsin said. "We're going to change it. We're going to fix it, and we're going to get better. "I mean, there is no Plan B. There's Plan A, and we're here to make this work." Game MVP Tune comple ted 26 of 40 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns with an interception while also rushing for 43 yards. Nathaniel Dell caught 10 passes for 150 yards, while Alton McCaskill ran for 66 yards and caught a touchdown pass. - Houston/AP College Football

UH quarterback Clayton Tune was sharp in last year's season finale, throwing for 393 yards and a career-best four touchdowns in a 56-41 loss to Navy. Clayton Tune's No. 3 jersey underwent a minor alteration this summer. A "C" patch was sewn into the top right corner of his football jersey, identifying Tune as one of the University of Houston's team-elected captains for this season. "It means a lot," Tune, set to begin a season as the Cougars' starting quarterback for the first time, said Wednesday durin g a Zoom call with reporters. "I don't take it lightly. I think it's a testament of the work I've put in for guys to vote for me to be a captain. It's a great honor." It's not uncommon for a quarterback to be selected a captain, although it's not a given . Tune's selection after only nine career starts over the last two seasons shows how quickly he has taken a leadership role and earned the respect of teammates. "He's got the ear of the team, the respect of the team," coach Dana Holgorsen said. - Houston Chronicle
