Texas Tech was picked ninth in the Big 12 preseason football media poll, which was released on Thursday afternoon. The Red Raiders received 119 points in the poll, which was voted on by media representatives for the conference. They finished ahead of Kansas in the rankings. The Jayhawks came in 10th with 48 points. Baylor received 17 first-place votes to claim the top spot in the poll with 365 points, ending Oklahoma's run on six-straight years as the preseason favorite in the conference.

The Sooners came in second with 12 first-place votes and 354 points. They are followed by Oklahoma State, Texas and Kansas State, respectively. Iowa State was sixth, TCU seventh and West Virginia eighth with Texas Tech and Kansas rounding out the projections. Texas Tech kicks off the 2022 season on Sept. 3 with a 7 p.m. home game against Murray State in Jones AT&T Stadium. The Red Raiders are entering their first season under head coach Joey McGuire after the team went 7-6 in 2021, closing the campaign with a 34-7 win over Mississippi State in the Liberty Bowl. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

Texas Tech coach Matt Wells told the Houston Chronicle on Wednesday that wide receiver Erik Ezukanma resumed catching footballs last week and running back SaRodorick Thompson is participating in summer workouts on a limited basis. There's no assurance either will be cleared for the Red Raiders' Sept. 4 season opener against the University of Houston at NRG Stadium. Wells reiterated, as he had said weeks ago, he will have a better handle on that during preseason practice in August. Ezukanma underwent surgery April 16 on his right arm to repair two fractures he suffered in practice the day before. Thompson underwent surgery the week before that for a right shoulder injury, also suffered in spractice. Wells was in Houston to speak at a Red Raider Club event. Thompson was the Red Raiders' leading rusher for the second year in a row, carrying 109 times for 610 yards and eight touchdowns. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

The Red Raiders return 99.2% of their rushing total, losing only three yards from Alan Bowman and ten from KeSean Carter. The three-headed monster of SaRodorick Thompson, Xavier White, and Tahj Brooks has the potential to be the best running back trio in the league. The key will be if they can stay healthy, which was a problem for 2020. If all three are available, that's when the unit shines the most as each brings a different skill set to the table. - Dallas Morning News

Depth at running back appeared to be a plus for Texas Tech coming out of the 2020 football season. The Red Raiders might get a chance to prove it earlier than they want in 2021. SaRodorick Thompson, the team's leading rusher each of the past two years, underwent surgery on his right shoulder last week and will be out through summer conditioning work, Tech coach Matt Wells said Tuesday. It's uncertain if Thompson will be ready for the Sept. 4 season opener against Houston at NRG Stadium. "Hell be back into practice in August," Wells told reporters on a Zoom video conference, "and then I'll be able to probably comment on his availability as we see him coming out of rehab late August, end of (preseason) practice. "Whether it's season opener, week two, week three, it's hard to say because that's the time frame toward the end of the recovery. Some guys recover quicker. We'll see how the thing heals and as he goes through the summer." Thompson ran for 765 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2019 and ran for 610 yards and eight touchdowns last season. The Red Raiders' running-back room also returns Xavier White, Tahj Brooks and Chadarius Townsend and will add state top-100 signee Cam'Ron Valdez from Rockdale this summer. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

After back-to-back 100-yard rushing performances to start the season, Tech running back SaRodorick Thompson managed only 46 yards on 12 carries at Kansas State and 14 yards on six carries at Iowa State. The emergence of Xavier White, who went for 113 yards on 12 carries at Kansas State, has something to do with that. And the Red Raiders had only 19 snaps in the first half at Iowa State. "We didn't have a whole lot of running plays," Wells said, "and we didn't have a whole lot of running plays that worked well. We were going to rep Xavier and rotate him in. What did we have in the first half? Sixteen, 19 snaps total? So not very many carries for anybody when you can't stay on the field, which we could not. "We need that rhythm. We need those reps. That gives you more carries. It gives you more touches for guys out on the perimeter. There's several guys, I would say, that didn't get as many touches as I would like, but that kind of goes back to the big-picture issue of not staying on the field, not converting on third down." - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

SaRodorick Thompson had to break a 75-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter to do it, but nevertheless he became the first Texas Tech running back since 1998 to start a season with two straight 100-yard rushing performances. That was according to Tech research on Monday. Ricky Williams was the back who did it in 1998 on the way to rushing for 1,582 yards and earning second-team all-America recognition. Thompson, bottled up by No. 8 Texas for most of the day, finished with 16 carries for 104 yards and two touchdowns in a 63-56 overtime loss at Jones AT&T Stadium. He carried 22 times for 118 yards and two TDs in the opener against Houston Baptist. Tech coaches have given Thompson breaks by rotating in Alabama transfer Chadarius Townsend, converted receiver Xavier White and true freshman Tahj Brooks. "SaRodorick's playing very well," Tech coach Matt Wells said. "He'll be the bell cow, and continues too be. I'm proud of SaRodorick. He's done a great job in the open field, makes you miss with the ball in his hands, either as a running back or as a receiver. He's done a very nice job in (pass) protection. I think he's had two solid games back to back." - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

A second Texas Tech football player accused of racing vehicles during an incident in late June was arrested Monday. SaRodorick Thompson, a 20-year-old running back from Irving, was booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center just before 2 p.m. Monday, according to jail records. After posting a 10% personal bond at $2,500, Thompson bailed out later in the afternoon. Records indicate he faces a Class B misdemeanor charge of racing stemming from a June 27 racing incident in which he's accused of fleeing the scene while a fellow teammate was arrested. Thompson was the Red Raiders' leading rusher last season and again in the 2020 season opener.

Tech announced later Monday that he can play in Saturday's Big 12 opener against Texas. Texas Tech running back SaRodorick Thompson was the Red Raiders' leading rusher last season. (Ray Carlin/USA Today) "SaRodorick Thompson was notified late last week that there had been a misdemeanor warrant issued in his name," the statement said. "Thompson and his lawyer are currently cooperating with the Lubbock Police Department and have done so since the incident in late June. Texas Tech Athletics will handle the matter consistent with its student-athlete discipline policy and any discipline will be handled internally. Thompson is expected to play in Saturday's Big 12 opener versus Texas." - Austin American Statesman

2020 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD WATCH LIST: SaRodorick Thompson (So.), Texas Tech,...Thompson led the Red Raiders in rushing as a redshirt freshman in 2019 as he compiled 765 yards on the ground after redshirting the 2018 campaign. He became the eighth Red Raider to lead the team in rushing as a freshman and just the second since 2002. Thompson found the end zone 12 times on the ground and added 39 catches for 154 yards through the air while playing in all 12 games and making seven starts. He carried the bulk of the load during Big 12 play as injuries plagued the running back room and went on to earn honorable mention All-Big 12 accolades by the conference coaches. - Texas Tech Football

SaRodorick Thompson took over as Texas Tech's lead running back during the 2019 football season, gradually becoming a workhorse and a top-10 ground gainer in the Big 12. That's not likely to change soon, barring an injury to Thompson, a rapid rise by incoming freshman Tahj Brooks or an addition from outside. The Red Raiders are, for the most part, pinning their hopes on Thompson and Brooks to handle the position. Alante Brown's failing to meet freshman eligibility requirements last summer and Ta'Zhawn Henry's decision to transfer just before spring practice leaves the Red Raiders with a thin running-backs room.

As a redshirt freshman, Thompson carried 160 times for 765 yards and 12 touchdowns. Within the Big 12, he ranked sixth in carries, eighth in rushing yards and third in rushing touchdowns. The Tech offensive staff can take heart from the fact he's handled a heavy load. "He kind of showed that last year, especially at the end of the season with the amount of reps he was taking," Tech offensive coordinator David Yost said. "He continued that on to when we started spring ball. It's like, 'Well, that's the guy we can lean on." - Lubbock Avalanche Journal
