  Texas Tech was picked ninth in the Big 12 preseason football media poll, which was released on Thursday afternoon. The Red Raiders received 119 points in the poll, which was voted on by media representatives for the conference. They finished ahead of Kansas in the rankings. The Jayhawks came in 10th with 48 points. Baylor received 17 first-place votes to claim the top spot in the poll with 365 points, ending Oklahoma's run on six-straight years as the preseason favorite in the conference.

The Sooners came in second with 12 first-place votes and 354 points. They are followed by Oklahoma State, Texas and Kansas State, respectively. Iowa State was sixth, TCU seventh and West Virginia eighth with Texas Tech and Kansas rounding out the projections. Texas Tech kicks off the 2022 season on Sept. 3 with a 7 p.m. home game against Murray State in Jones AT&T Stadium. The Red Raiders are entering their first season under head coach Joey McGuire after the team went 7-6 in 2021, closing the campaign with a 34-7 win over Mississippi State in the Liberty Bowl. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal
