Virginia Tech's 2021 captains aren't lacking experience. The Hokies picked tight end James Mitchell, linebacker Dax Hollifield, safety Chamarri Conner, offensive lineman Brock Hoffman and offensive lineman Tyrell Smith to be captains this fall. Smith is a notable selection as a rare three-time captain. He was voted captain by his teammates in 2019. The veteran lineman initially planned to be a graduate assistant in the weight room this season, but reversed course after spring camp. He's the only p layer remaining on the roster who signed with Tech during coach Frank Beamer's tenure. He's played in 54 games during his career and played in every game for Tech from 2016-18. Smith's co-captains last year were safety Divine Deablo, defensive tackle Jar rod Hewitt and linebacker Rayshard Ashby. This year his co-captains all have prominent places on the depth chart as well. Mitchell briefly flirted with the idea of entering the NFL Draft, but decided to come back for another season. As the team's startin g tight end last year, he had 26 catches for 435 yards with four touchdowns. - Roanoke Times

Virginia Tech senior tight end James Mitchell and junior defensive end Amare Barno and Virginia junior linebacker Nick Jackson were all named to the ACC's preseason all-conference football team, the league announced Tuesday. The 6-foot-3, 242-pound Mitch ell, who is on the Mackey Award watch list as one of the nation's top tight ends, has 47 career receptions for 796 yards in 36 games for the Hokies. He's caught six touchdown passes, including a team-high four last season, and has rushed for five more sc ores.A highly-regarded NFL prospect, Mitchell opted to return to Tech for his senior season. Since then, he's worked to improve his route-running and added about 10 pounds of muscle, he said, without sacrificing speed. "I'm running well. I'm as st rong as I've ever been," said Mitchell. "That was a huge part of me coming back, was continuing to get stronger. I play down there in the trenches. Continue to be able to block those guys on the line." - Richmond Times-Dispatch

Virginia Tech fans witnessed a string of high-profile departures from the team in December. Starting left tackle Christian Darrisaw announced he was leaving early for the NFL, defensive stalwarts Rayshard Ashby and Jarrod Hewitt opted to pass on the COVI D-related extra year of eligibility from the NCAA and multiple starters transferred. Fans grew increasingly anxious about what starting tight end James Mitchell was going to do as they counted down the days to 2021. Mitchell posted a video on social medi a to announce he was coming back on Dec. 29, but told reporters on Tuesday that he had already made up his mind a week earlier.Mitchell said it was a pretty straight forward process that started with putting his name into the NFL college advisory committee for feedback. He also sat down with his family and had multiple meetings with various Tech coaches from head coach Justin Fuente to defensive line coach Bill Teerlinck, who has maintained strong ties with NFL personnel. - Roanoke Times

Tech ran for 260 yards against a North Carolina team that allowed 108 rushing yards combined in the first two weeks. "He's becoming a really really good blocker just downfield, sealing edges," Tech running back Khalil Herbert said. "Makes it easy for me to run around. Shout out to the guys in the tight end room. They're doing a really great job." That was on display when Mitchell created the room Herbert, who leads all FBS running backs with 149.7 yards per game, needed on an 8-yard touchdown in the sec ond quarter. Herbert bounced to the outside as Mitchell drove defensive back Ladaeson DeAndre Hollins back 5-yards from the line of scrimmage with an impressive pancake block. It was a play Mitchell might not have been able to make early in his career. | | | | |
