Devon Matthews, Indiana, Player News

Somewhere, in the midst of a soul-searching offense inside IU's North End Zone football facility, safeties coach Jason Jones asked his star safety what brought him back. Devon Matthews - better known by his nickname, "Monster" - probably would've had NFL options. He'd accomplished a tremendous amount in college, both individually as one of the Hoosiers' best defensive players across the past four seasons and collectively as part of a group that guided Indiana to back-to-back bowl games in 2019 and 2020. Jones, then, was curious: After a tremendously disappointing 2021 season, why did Matthews elect to use his COVID season and opt for one more year in college? "The reason that he chose to come to Indiana was because he wanted to come here and do s omething different," Jones said. "He said, 'Coach, we didn't finish the right way. I want to come back, and we're gonna finish this thing the right way." As Tom Allen's program tries to rebound from its dismal 2-10 performance last season, the Hoosiers w ill lean heavily on their most experienced players this fall. Players for whom last year's bottoming out was an aberration across the course of 4-5 years spent either in the bowl field or pushing up against it all the way into the final weekend of the re gular season. Nowhere on his roster can Allen count more of those players than in his all-important defensive backfield. - Indianapolis Star/News

Indiana junior safety Devon Matthews enjoyed a breakout 2020 season for the Hoosiers, one that ended with him earning third-team All-Big Ten honors. Now, IU safeties coach Jason Jones is challenging Matthews to take another step in his development next s eason in terms of being a more vocal leader on defense. "He now understands what is going on in the back end with the safeties, the husky and the two corners," Jones said. "Now let's take the next step and understand what the linebackers are doing and wh at is happening up front to see the entire picture. He is a smart young man and understands that we could put a lot on his plate and give him different options."We are putting more on his plate, and he has done a good job at embracing it. He is ta king and running with it." The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Matthews, nicknamed "Monster," proved to be a playmaker in his first year starting at strong safety for IU, finishing with 40 tackles, two tackles for a loss, one sack, one interception, six pass breakup s and one QB hurry. "I have definitely progressed very well going into last year," Matthews said. "I think I stepped up more last year and being more vocal. This year, I am even taking it up more of a notch. I am just talking more, communicating more." - Herald Bulletin
