Mohamed Ibrahim rushed for 71 yards on 16 carriers with a touchdown and became Minnesota's all-time rushing leader in the Golden Gophers' 28-20 win over Syracuse in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium on Thursday. Ibrahim, who missed virtually all of la st year with a ruptured Achilles, closed out a solid career in dramatic fashion. After getting injured in the 2021 season opener against Penn State, Ibrahim returned for a sixth season and finished his career with 4,668 yards and 53 rushing touchdowns in 40 games since joining the Golden Gophers as a two-star recruit from Baltimore. Ibrahim broke the school record held by Darrell Thompson (4,654 yards from 1986-89) on a 10-yard gain with about 2 1/2 minutes left in the first half. Before breaking the re cord, Ibrahim scored a gritty 4-yard run with 13:39 remaining in the half before sitting out the final periods. The TD gave him 20 and moved him past Gary Russell (19 in 2005) for the most single-season TDs in school history.Trey Potts replaced Ib rahim in the backfield and had 27 yards on 10 carries. Daniel Jackson hauled in a pair of TD passes - a 20-yard reception in the second and a 25-yard grab in the final minute of the third. Athan Kaliakmanis started at QB for Minnesota (9-4) and completed 7 of 9 passes for 80 yards before being helped off the field with an injury. Tanner Morgan made his first appearance since Nov. 5 and completed 4 of 7 passes for 58 yards. Syracuse (7-6) ended what was a promising season on a down note, playing without star running back Sean Tucker, who declared for the NFL draft on Dec. 17. Syracuse's offense totaled 477 yards, but struggled at times as the Orange lost six of their final seven games after a 6-0 start elevated them to No. 14 in The Associated Press Top 25 Poll. LeQuint Allen replaced Tucker and finished with 103 yards on 16 carries. Garret Shrader faced constant pressure and completed 32 of 51 passes for 329 yards. He ran for both of Syracuse's TDs, and also overthrew receivers at times. - Minnesota/A P College Football

Mohamed Ibrahim rushed for 178 yards and three touchdowns and Minnesota's defense continued its dominance on Saturday as the Golden Gophers defeated Northwestern 31-3. Ibrahim, who carried the ball 36 times, extended his streak of consecutive 100-yard ru shing games to 18, the longest in FBS since 2000. He also became the seventh player in Big Ten history with 50 career rushing touchdowns. The Gophers didn't ask freshman quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis, making his first home start in place of the injured T anner Morgan, to do much. He was 7-for-13 passing for 64 yards and rushed four times for 28 yards. Kaliakmanis relieved Morgan at halftime of Minnesota's game at Nebraska on Nov. 5, rallying the Gophers from a 10-0 deficit to a 20-13 win.The Gophe rs (7-3, 4-3 Big Ten) entered the game with the No. 4-scoring defense in the country, allowing just 14.2 points per game. That average dipped further after they kept the Wildcats (1-9, 1-6) out of the end zone for the first time all season. On the second play of the second half, Gophers defensive back Tyler Nubin intercepted a pass from backup quarterback Ryan Hilinski. Minnesota turned that into a 41-yard field goal by Matthew Trickett and a 17-3 lead. Ibrahim's 1-yard plunge on the first play of the f ourth quarter made it 24-3. It was Ibrahim's 18th rushing touchdown of the season, tying the school record set by Gary Russell in 2005. The Wildcats crossed the 50-yard line just twice in the first half. Midway through the first, they advanced to the Gop hers 16 before Jordan Howden and Terrell Smith teamed to stuff Evan Hull on fourth and 1. Later, the Gophers appeared poised to head into the locker room with a 14-0 halftime lead, as a punt pinned Northwestern at its own 7-yard line with 2:08 to play. B ut two passes later, the Wildcats were in field goal position. - Minnesota/AP College Football

Mohamed Ibrahim rushed for 128 yards and two second-half touchdowns, and backup quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis brought Minnesota back from a 10-point halftime deficit in the Gophers' 20-13 victory over Nebraska on Saturday. The Gophers (6-3, 3-3 Big Ten) beat the Cornhuskers for a fourth straight year and became bowl-eligible for the fourth time in coach P.J. Fleck's six seasons. Nebraska (3-6, 2-4) lost its third straight game. Kaliakmanis, who took over at the start of the third quarter after Tanner Mo rgan was injured on the final play of the first half, led the Gophers to scores on four of his first five possessions. Ibrahim's 3-yard run finished an 86-yard drive that tied it 10-10 and Matthew Trickett's 49-yard field goal gave the Gophers the lead. Ibrahim ran in from 3 yards after Terell Smith intercepted a Chubba Purdy pass to set up Minnesota at the Nebraska 33. The Huskers turned over the ball on downs near midfield on their final possession, and the Gophers ran out the clock.Ibrahim, he ld to 18 yards on eight carries in the first half, went over 100 yards for a Bowl Subdivision-best 17th straight game. He finished with 32 carries, his third straight game with at least 30. Purdy made his first start in place of Casey Thompson, who was h eld out after injuring a nerve in his right (throwing) elbow against Illinois last week. The Huskers scored on their first two possessions, with Purdy running in from 2 yards and Timmy Bleekrode kicking a 24-yard field goal. The Huskers' next four posses sions netted 25 yards and Purdy began alternating with Logan Smothers early in the third quarter. Minnesota could get nothing going in the first half against the worst defense in the Big Ten. The Huskers held the Gophers to their fewest rushing yards (mi nus-7 yards) and total yards (31) in a half under Fleck. They also recorded three sacks against a Minnesota offense that had given up a Big Ten-low seven through eight games. Morgan, injured when sacked by Ty Robinson, was knocked out of the Oct. 15 game at Illinois in the fourth quarter with a concussion and he missed the next game against Penn State before starting last week against Rutgers. - Minnesota/AP College Football

Mohamed Ibrahim rushed for 159 yards and three touchdowns on 36 carries to lead Minnesota past Rutgers 31-0 on Saturday to stop a three-game losing streak. Quarterback Tanner Morgan crisply returned from a concussion that kept him out of the previous gam e for the Gophers (5-3, 2-3 Big Ten), who enjoyed a 19-play, 99-yard drive on their first possession that drained 10:24 off the clock. They converted 13 of 19 third downs and were in full control on this sun-drenched 69-degree afternoon, turning the seco nd half into a snoozer and giving coach P.J. Fleck a victory over his mentor and former boss Greg Schiano. The Gophers had the ball for 41:02. Minnesota's revived defense produced a punishing and unrelenting performance against a Scarlet Knights team mis sing leading rusher Samuel Brown V and still dealing with quarterback instability.Gavin Wimsatt made his second career start, going 6 for 17 for 68 yards. He threw the first of two interceptions by Tyler Nubin at the Rutgers 33 early in the fourth quarter that set up Ibrahim's third score and put the game out of reach. That was Ibrahim's 46th career touchdown, breaking the all-time program record held by Darrell Thompson, who cheered the feat from his perch in the radio broadcast booth. Wimsatt w as replaced by Noah Vedral, the sixth-year player who started the previous three games, when he took a shoulder-to-shoulder hit at the end of a run and had his head snap back hard against the turf midway through the fourth quarter. The Scarlet Knights (4 -4, 1-4), who are chasing their first winning record since their inaugural Big Ten season, had just 134 total yards of offense in the type of game that got offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson fired earlier this month and replaced on an interim basis by Nu nzio Campanile. - Minnesota/AP College Football

It took until Week 3 for a player to rush for 200 yards in game. It happened four times Saturday. Eastern Michigan's Samson Evans carried 36 times for 259 yards and a touchdown against Arizona State, picking up 108 yards in the fourth quarter alone. In h is 19 other career games, he had never gone for more than 89 yards. UNLV's Aidan Robbins ran 29 times for 227 yards and three TDs against North Texas. The Louisville transfer had never run for more than 84 yards in any of his previous six games. UAB's De Wayne McBride had his second career 200-yard game, carrying 28 times for 223 yards and four TDs against Georgia Southern. Minnesota's Mohammed Ibrahim had 23 carries for 202 yards and three touchdowns against Colorado, his fourth career 200-yard outing. - AP College Football

Mo Ibrahim ran for three touchdowns, Tanner Morgan threw for three more and the Minnesota Gophers' defense stifled the Colorado Buffaloes in a 49-7 win on Saturday. The Gophers' offense, ranked first in FBS in total yards and seventh in points scored ent ering the week, racked up 500 yards, including 349 yards in a 35-point first half. The starters scored touchdowns on six of their eight drives. Ibrahim scored the team's first three touchdowns, the last an 18-yard run in the second quarter that tied him with Darrell Thompson for Minnesota's career rushing touchdowns record. Ibrahim compiled 202 rushing yards, a school-record fourth time he's run for 200-plus yards.Morgan completed 11 of his 16 passes for 157 yards. After throwing an interception in the second quarter, Morgan threw two touchdown passes in the second quarter - a 39-yard strike to Chris Autman-Bell and a 16-yard throw to Dylan Wright - and added another in the third quarter. Meanwhile, Colorado's offense was nearly non-existent as it continued to rotate Sophomores J.T. Shrout and Brendon Lewis at quarterback. Shrout started the game but was replaced by Lewis for the second series after Shrout was striped and sacked on the Buffaloes' first offensive snap. Shrout completed 4-of-11 p asses for 24 yards and one touchdown. Lewis completed 2-of-6 passes for 14 yards. Colorado managed 227 yards, 136 of which came in the fourth quarter with most of the Gophers' starters out. The Buffaloes' fourth quarter touchdown, a 4-yard touchdown thro w from Shrout to Aubrey Smith, was the second touchdown the Gophers' defense has allowed all season. It's the second year in a row that Minnesota has shut out Colorado. The Gophers beat the Buffaloes 30-0 in Boulder, Colo. last season. - Minnesota/AP Col lege Football

Jerry Kill's unexpected return to Minnesota with his rebuilding team was a predictably emotional night for New Mexico State's new coach. After some apparent reconciliation with P.J. Fleck, Kill was given an up-close reminder that a Gophers program he nev er wanted to leave is still in pretty good shape. Mo Ibrahim rushed for 132 yards and two touchdowns for Minnesota in his seamless comeback from a season-ending injury in the opener a year ago, and Fleck and the Gophers overwhelmed the Aggies 38-0 on Thu rsday night to spoil a homecoming of sorts for Kill. "I guess I take it as a blessing that I got the opportunity to come back," said Kill, who had a cordial pregame conversation with Fleck, his former assistant at Northern Illinois of whom he'd been crit ical in the past.Fleck and Kill shared an extended postgame handshake, too, after Minnesota outgained New Mexico State a whopping 485-91 in total yardage. Fleck said he approached Kill by thanking him for his impact on his career. "I appreciate Je rry's passion, because I know how bad Jerry loves this place," Fleck said. "The one thing I'll say is, So do I. I know how he feels, because I want to be here. It's a very special place to me, and I couldn't imagine not being here." Ibrahim, who tore his Achilles in the loss to Ohio State last Sept. 2, started his sixth college season in style. He bounced off and bashed into the Aggies over 21 carries, extending his school-record streak of 100-plus yards to 10 straight games and moving into a tie with M arion Barber III for second place in Gophers history with 35 career touchdowns. The return of Kill was even more remarkable in Minnesota, where he inherited a bottomed-out program in 2011 and won the Big Ten Coach of the Year award in 2014 before epileps y-related health problems forced him to retire midway through the 2015 season. - Minnesota/AP College Football

Early during practice on a sunny, 85-degree Tuesday, Gophers football coach P.J. Fleck put his team through a drill that featured two blockers matched up with two defenders at different levels, while a ball-carrier tried to pick his way through the mass of bodies and sprint out the other end without being tackled. All the while, teammates formed a tunnel with the offense on one side and defense on the other. First up in the drill for the offense was running back Mohamed Ibrahim, the sixth-year senior wh o is back on the field and taking full contact nearly a year after a ruptured left Achilles' tendon ended his season in the opener against Ohio State. In the drill, Ibrahim powered his way through a would-be tackler to his teammates' delight. Tuesday was n't the first time since the injury that Ibrahim was back absorbing hits - that came last week - but the Baltimore native met with the media for the first time since last training camp and declared his recovery at "100 percent." "It was weird,'' he said of his first contact since his Achilles' surgery. "I hadn't been tackled since Sept. 2, so it's a rhythm thing. You just gotta learn how to do it all over again."That shouldn't be too difficult for Ibrahim, who was doing it quite well before his i njury. The 2020 Big Ten Running Back of the Year rushed for 1,076 yards and 15 touchdowns in that seven-game season, averaging 153.7 yards per game, second best in the nation. Last Sept. 2, he was picking up where he left off against No. 4 Ohio State at Huntington Bank Stadium. He tore through the Buckeyes for 162 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries during a 45-31 loss. On his 30th carry, however, Ibrahim's left calf had a telltale ripple as he planted his foot, stretching for extra yardage. Ibrahim lay on the turf, clutching at his leg, but he didn't initially believe the injury was that serious. "I thought it was just a cramp," Ibrahim said. "[Team medical staff] didn't tell me what it actually was until I was walking into the locker room. It was surprising." - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Minnesota saw a fearsome foursome stay in the Twin Cities for 2022. Quarterback Tanner Morgan, running back Mohamed Ibrahim, wide receiver Chris Autman-Bell and offensive lineman John Michael Schmitz all enter their sixth collegiate seasons for the Gophe rs. Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck rattled off a nickname for the quartet of super-seniors: the "Encore Four." Morgan leads the Gophers offense with 8,072 passing yards and 56 touchdown passes to his name from 2018-21. Autman-Bell emerged as one of Morg an's targets, catching 36 passes for 506 yards and six touchdowns in 2021 (114 career receptions for 1,756 yards and 12 touchdowns in the last four seasons). Schmitz, a second-team All-Big Ten selection by the coaches in 2021, recently claimed Outland Tr ophy and Rimington Trophy watch list honors for the upcoming season.Ibrahim comes back to Minnesota with two 1,000-yard rushing seasons already on his résumé, along with being named a first-team All-Big Ten selection and the Ameche-Dayne Big Ten running back of the year in 2020. His 2021 season started hot, scorching Ohio State for 163 yards on 30 carries with two touchdowns in the opener before a torn Achilles cost him the rest of the year. "Decided to come back, not only for himself, but for his teammates, and I think that kind of spread through our entire team," Fleck said. "John Michael Schmitz's coming back, Tanner Morgan coming back, 'Crab' coming back, Chris Autman-Bell. They made choices based on really what Mo was going to do. "Mo cou ld have gone to the National Football League because as he would say, 5'8" is 5'8". He's not getting any taller. But he did it for the team, and he did it to kind of put a different ending to what happened." - Wisconsin State Journal

Mo Ibrahim and Trey Potts weren't cloaked in bubble wrap during spring practices in March, but the affect was the same as the Gophers' top running back duo watched as teammates went through contact drills and scrimmages. That will change on Monday. After serious injuries ended their 2021 seasons by early October, Ibrahim and Potts have been cleared for full contact and will have a month to prepare for the season opener against Jerry Kill-coached New Mexico State on Sept. 1 at Huntington Bank Stadium. | | | | |
