Florida Gators wide receiver Justin Shorter announced on social media on Thursday that he will skip the bowl game to prepare for the upcoming NFL Draft. A transfer from Penn State, Shorter finished the 2022 season second on the Gators in receiving yardag e with 29 catches for 577 yards and 2 TDs. He caught two long passes for touchdowns from quarterback Anthony Richardson - a 75-yard bomb against Eastern Washington and a 51-yard bomb against LSU. Shorter missed three of Florida's final four games with a hamstring injury. He finished his Florida career with 95 catches for 1,395 yards and 8 TDs. Shorter will take part in the East-West Shrine game, a showcase event for NFL-bound college players. Florida will be down two key receivers, Shorter and Daejon Re ynolds, for the bowl game. Reynolds announced Wednesday he is putting his name in the transfer portal. - Gainesville Sun

After a breakout season for the Florida offense in 2020 things are back to being a little bit of an unknown. Heisman Trophy finalist quarterback Kyle Trask is gone as are his top three pass catchers from a year ago - Kyle Pitts, Kadarius Toney and Trevon Grimes. The three combined for 2,343 yards and 31 touchdowns through the air. Expected to step up in their absence are redshirt juniors Justin Shorter and Jacob Copeland, among others. "I would say that we're not really replacing them. I would say we're just bringing a new crop of wideouts in that are well-trained. I'd say our group is young, but we're all hungry," Shorter said. "Everyone is out there putting in the extra work to really be that big group. We're really putting in that work and we're all just pushing, trying to be great."Shorter, a Penn State transfer, had 25 receptions for the Gators last year for 258 yards and three touchdowns. The 6-foot-5 receiver will likely play on the outside this season as he and the other pass catchers c ontinue to work on their chemistry with new starting quarterback Emory Jones. "Everything is about timing and our big thing was we all got reps with Emory and Anthony (Richardson) and all the quarterbacks," Shorter said. "Every single day we have been ou t there on the field throwing and trying to get our timing down." - Gainesville Sun

A year removed from losing four receivers to the NFL, Florida has to replace the tandem of Trevon Grimes and Kadarius Toney, a first-round pick. Toney's jersey and position now belong to Jacob Copeland, the lone returning starter. He moved to the slot in the spring and was awarded No. 1 this offseason by Mullen. Justin Shorter also has a new number (4) and will fill the void left by Grimes outside. The Gators have several options for their third and fourth receiver spots, with sophomores such as Xzavier Henderson and Ja'Quavion Fraziars competing against upperclassmen Jordan Pouncey and Rick Wells. - Gainesville Sun

Former Penn State receiver Justin Shorter is eligible to play for No. 8 Florida this season. The Gators confirmed Friday that the NCAA granted Shorter's request to waive a one-year transfer rule, meaning he doesn't have to sit out the 2020 season. Schola rship players in the Football Bowl Subdivision are required to sit out one year after changing schools, but the rule can be set aside because of a "specific, extraordinary circumstance." Shorter left Penn State last November and entered the NCAA transfer portal. He landed at Florida three months later. He announced on Instagram late Thursday that his waiver had been granted. Shorter caught 15 passes for 157 yards in two partial seasons in Happy Valley. He was ranked as the nation's top receiver coming o ut of South Brunswick High School in Monmouth Junction, New Jersey, in 2018. - AP College Football
