We knew the cornerback position was one of the team's biggest question marks heading into 2020 after losing starters Lavert Hill and Ambry Thomas. But this year's starters Vincent Gray and Gemon Green acquitted themselves well in the opener against Minne sota. Saturday was a different story. Both got beat deep on multiple occasions, and they also combined for three penalties in coverage. Gray's struggles reached a tipping point in the second half, with Michigan benching him for redshirt freshman Jalen Pe rry, who was making his college debut. Perry didn't fare much better, begging the question: what does Michigan do at cornerback moving forward? It doesn't have much experience outside of that trio. Redshirt freshman DJ Turner and redshirt sophomore Sammy Faustin are options, but neither has appeared in a game at corner (Faustin appeared in three games at safety in 2019). Expect defensive coordinator Don Brown to make adjustments before Saturday's game at Indiana. - Ann Arbor News

When Rocky Lombardi dropped back to pass on first-and-10 from Michigan's 34-yard line with 6:36 to go, he saw a familiar scene playing out. Michigan State freshman receiver Ricky White was streaking down the right sideline, single-covered by cornerback J alen Perry, with a beat on his defender. Lombardi let the ball go and delivered it to White for a 31-yard completion, setting up the go-ahead touchdown in the Spartans' stunning 27-24 win over Michigan on Saturday. It was a result that played out time an d again for the Wolverines, whose inexperience in the secondary and unwillingness to change schematically gave MSU a pathway to victory. "We've got to look at that," Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh said of his secondary's struggles. "Every single guy. W hat they can do and what they can do better. Every coach, too. We've got to look at all facets of it."On first-and-10 from the Michigan 30-yard line at the 10:57 mark of the first quarter, Lombardi found White running down the left sideline a step ahead of Michigan cornerback Gemon Green, a redshirt sophomore who made his first collegiate start a week earlier against Minnesota. It was the first sign of a long day ahead for Michigan's secondary, which was caught off guard by the Spartans' deep-bal l game plan. "We didn't really expect those - because the game plan was just to hone in on the run," safety Daxton Hill said. "But they threw some (deep) shots in there, so we had to adjust." Michigan's other starting corner, Vincent Gray, had a difficul t day in coverage as well. The redshirt sophomore was flagged twice, once for holding and once for pass interference, on MSU's final drive of the first quarter. Don Brown may have jumped the gun. Asked last week during a video conference call with reporters about Michigan cornerback Vincent Gray, who is set to enter his redshirt sophomore season this fall with more responsibility than ever, the 64-year-old defen sive coordinator described a player with an incredibly high ceiling. So high, in fact, he fears Gray may decide to declare for the NFL draft before his eligibility is up. "Not that I begrudge that - because I wouldn't at all," Brown said. "But I think he 's an outstanding player with tremendous range."Gray, listed at 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, is next in line to fill an open spot at corner, a staple of Michigan's in-your-face, blitz defense in recent years. With Lavert Hill gone, the Rochester, Mich ., native is the logical choice to line up opposite of Ambry Thomas in the backfield. "He played all year last year," Brown correctly pointed out, referring to Thomas' 13 appearances and one start as a redshirt freshman. "Was in the rotation the entire y ear. When Lavert got hurt and did not play (against Illinois), he played the whole game." In total, Gray notched 20 tackles (1 1/2 for a loss) and five pass breakups while taking on many different roles. He played mostly corner, but Brown asked Gray to t ake on more responsibility at nickel and at safety, especially late in the season with Brad Hawkins injured. - Ann Arbor News
