  08/17/22 - QB Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU, 6-3, 235 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Brennan considered transferring with one year left. He needed to play so he could prove himself to NFL evaluators. His father, Owen, said interest came from Florida State, Pittsburgh, Nebraska, Southern Miss, Tulane and Wisconsin. Hours before Brennan made his choice, Kelly called him one day in December. Kelly never guaranteed Brennan a spot, but he seemed likely to win the job because of his experience. Then LSU signed Daniels two months later. Brennan said the staff communicated well when it added another quarterback, telling him Daniels offered a chance to raise the level of competition at the position. The coaches wanted to let the best player win out.

Brennan understood. Whenever he talked, he expressed confidence in himself to win the battle, even after Nussmeier emerged as a viable option during spring practice and turned the competition into a three-man race. "I'm a fighter," Brennan said at the Manning Passing Academy this summer. "I like to compete. I want it to be hard. I want it to be a challenge. I know I have one year left, but my whole career has played out for this exact moment." Brennan didn't do anything wrong. He patiently waited. He pushed his body through pain. He tried to win the job again. But that moment never came. - Baton Rouge Advocate

LSU quarterback Myles Brennan has decided to end his college football career after five seasons with the Tigers. The 23-year-old Brennan, who announced his decision on Monday, spent his first three years at LSU as a backup. He was named the starter in 2020, only to have that season cut short by an abdominal injury after three starts in which he passed for 1,112 yards and 11 touchdowns. Brennan then missed all of last season because of a non-football arm injury that occurred during a fishing outing at the end of August camp.

The former prized recruit out of St. Stanislaus High School in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, briefly entered the transfer portal last offseason before deciding to return to LSU in hopes of competing for a starting job once more. However, he fell out of the early running for that spot in recent days, behind redshirt freshman Garrett Nussmeier and Arizona State transfer Jaden Daniels. Brennan appeared in 20 career games for LSU, passing for 1,712 yards and 13 touchdowns. He appeared in eight games as Joe Burrow's backup during the Tigers' 2019, 15-0, national championship season - the winningest campaign in the 128-year history of the program. - AP College Football

LSU quarterback Myles Brennan is walking away from football, the team confirmed in a statement Monday. The sixth-year senior was set to return this fall after missing all of 2021 with an off-field arm injury. Brennan had entered his name in the transfer portal last year before new coach Brian Kelly convinced him to return to LSU. In last week's scrimmage, Brennan took only second-team snaps while Arizona State transfer Jayden Daniels took first-team snaps. Sophomore Garrett Nussmeier missed the scrimmage because of an ankle sprain, but Kelly said he would've taken some first-team snaps. "We are grateful to Myles for everything he has done for LSU Football," Kelly said in a statement. "Myles is a great leader who has made a tremendous impact on this program, and he has earned the respect of everyone here through his commitment and love for LSU." - The Athletic

During his three games as the LSU QB in 2020, Myles Brennan looked like a potential All-SEC performer. He completed 79 of 131 passes for 1,112 yards, 11 touchdowns and three interceptions. In limited playing time prior to that, he had 600 yards passing, two touchdowns and three interceptions. If Brennan can somehow pick up where he left off in 2020, he'll get plenty of snaps this season. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Not too long ago, freshman quarterback Walker Howard approached Myles Brennan and said he wanted to tell him something. "What's up?" Brennan asked. "When you were a freshman at LSU," Howard told him, "I was in seventh grade." "I didn't need to know that," Brennan said, laughing. "I know I'm old." That's the running joke with Brennan these days. Once a hyped freshman himself, he stuck around waiting for his chance until he became a sixth-year senior, making him one of the oldest players - and easily the oldest quarterback - on the roster. But aside from something Brennan jokes about with his younger teammates, his age means he doesn't have much time left in his college career.

Brennan stretched his eligibility as far as possible. He has one season left, and the harsh reality of a three-man quarterback race with junior Jayden Daniels and redshirt freshman Garrett Nussmeier gives him no guarantee he will start this fall. Brennan understands the possibility. He still faces it head-on. Brennan never thought about leaving at the end of spring practice. Instead of finding assurances elsewhere, he stayed to win the job he always wanted. "I'm a fighter," Brennan said Friday at the Manning Passing Academy, where he was a counselor for the first time. "I like to compete. I want it to be hard. I want it to be a challenge. I know I have one year left, but my whole career has played out for this exact moment." - Baton Rouge Advocate

While multiple players departed the LSU football program following the departure of Ed Orgeron, new head coach Brian Kelly sees players who opted to return that have surprised him. While he didn't commit to a starting quarterback, former starter Myles Brennan has impressed. "I think Myles Brennan...is a guy that has been here a long time, suffered an injury, battled back, had a really good spring game. Each one of the quarterbacks, [Garrett] Nussmeier to obviously, Jayden Daniels and [Walker] Howard, I mean, they all have different skills, and so when we get to camp, we're going to have to really put the offense into what they can do, but Brennan's, another guy that I think did a nice job." - On3.com

Quarterback Myles Brennan announced Thursday he will return for a sixth season at LSU after entering the NCAA transfer portal earlier this year. Brennan submitted his name into the database in early November, which allowed other schools to contact him, but after a little more than six weeks, he ultimately decided to withdraw from the portal. The decision gave Brennan one more chance to become the Tigers' starting quarterback and bolstered LSU's depth at the position. He posted a scene on Twitter from "The Wolf of Wall Street" in which Leonardo DiCaprio's character shouts, "I'm not leaving!" "There's no place like home," Brennan wrote. "Let's ride tiger nation!" New LSU coach Brian Kelly called Brennan earlier this week, as first reported by Sports Illustrated, in the hopes of adding a veteran quarterback to the roster for his first year with the program.

Brennan mulled his decision for two days before the announcement. Nebraska had pursued him, among other schools. With Brennan back on the team, LSU now has three scholarship quarterbacks for the 2022 season. He rejoined rising sophomore Garrett Nussmeier and incoming five-star freshman Walker Howard, and his presence may let both underclassmen develop further before competing for the starting job. Brennan has one more year of eligibility. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Fifth-year senior quarterback Myles Brennan has decided to exit the transfer portal and return to LSU under new head coach Brian Kelly. Brennan announced his decision with a social media post on Thursday morning, about a week after 2021 LSU starting quarterback Max Johnson announced his intention to transfer out. Brennan started three games in 2020, throwing for 1,112 and 11 TDs against three interceptions, before a core injury ended his season. He entered August camp competing with Johnson to start this season, but a non-football injury took him out of contention and he wound up not playing a single snap during the regular season before announcing in November he intended to transfer. Brennan's return means that in his final year of college eligibility he'll be competing for snaps against current freshman Garrett Nussmeier and coveted recruit Walker Howard, who formally signed on Wednesday and will be a freshman next season. - AP College Football

Former LSU quarterback Myles Brennan is one of the top names on the college football transfer portal market this offseason. Brennan joined the Tigers after a storied career at St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis. He took the Rock-A-Chaws to two state title games and was named the Sun Herald Player of the Year three times. Brennan, 22, played in 18 games at LSU, throwing 13 touchdowns, but dealt with injuries in each of the last two years.

Brennan started the first three games on the 2020 season before missing the rest of the year with a torn abdominal muscle. He was set to battle Max Johnson for the starting job in 2021 but suffered an arm injury while out fishing. Outgoing Tiger coach Ed Orgeron confirmed on Nov. 1 Brennan would be entering his name into the transfer portal. While many players in the portal are open about who is recruiting them, Brennan has been quiet. He hasn't shared any offers he has received, leaving open many rumors about his next destination. Of the Brennan suitors out there, Rivals site Big Gold Nation has confirmed Southern Miss is recruiting the Mississippi native hard and hosted Brennan on campus on Tuesday. - Baton Rouge Advocate

As LSU quarterback Myles Brennan recovers from a broken left arm, coach Ed Orgeron said he was told Brennan can return "sometime this season," but the exact date hasn't been determined. "I don't want to say nothing prematurely," Orgeron said. "He's just getting over the pain." Brennan tripped and broke his humerus while preparing for a fishing trip five days before LSU opened preseason practice Aug. 6, his father said. Brennan quickly underwent surgery. LSU hasn't released a timeline for his recovery.

Orgeron said Wednesday night the fifth-year senior may start throwing in a month and will wear pads again as soon as possible, but Orgeron doesn't want Brennan to rush his recovery. His arm will have to withstand hits. "I'm not in a hurry," Orgeron said. "I'm not going to rush him. I want him to be ready. I was told he can come back sometime this season, as early as mid-season, as late as the open date (Oct. 30), or Alabama (the week after), somewhere around there. None of that's definite, now." - Baton Rouge Advocate

LSU quarterback Myles Brennan broke his left arm Sunday night as he prepared for a fishing trip in Grand Isle during his final week off before preseason practice, his father Owen said Wednesday afternoon during an interview with WWL-FM, 105.3. An avid fisherman during his spare time, Brennan was holding his equipment, and his flip-flop got caught on a loose board, his father said. Brennan tripped and fell on his left arm, unable to brace himself with his hands full.

The fifth-year senior thought he bruised his arm, but the next morning, he realized the injury was more significant. Brennan then drove himself to Baton Rouge, where doctors discovered a compound fracture in the middle of his humerus, Brennan's father said. "He could have been anywhere, anytime, and this accident could have happened," Owen Brennan said. "It was just an absolute freak accident. He was not doing anything that he was not supposed to be doing. Sometimes that's even harder to take." LSU hadn't disclosed how Brennan hurt his arm. The injury required surgery, which Brennan had Tuesday morning. Brennan would have competed with sophomore Max Johnson throughout preseason practice to start the season opener Sept. 4 against UCLA. Coach Ed Orgeron named Johnson the starter after Brennan's injury. - Baton Rouge Advocate

And just like that, LSU's quarterback battle became a vigil. The thunderclap news Monday that quarterback Myles Brennan suffered what coach Ed Orgeron ominously referred to as a "severe injury" to his left arm turned the thoughts and expectations about the coming football season on their collective earhole. A 50-50 fencing duel across August between Brennan and Max Johnson to become LSU's starting quarterback? Not happening. A chapter of plays in new offensive coordinator Jake Peetz's playbook, designed to feature Johnson's RPO threat? May have to be edited out or toned down, at least for now. At the moment, LSU's only other scholarship quarterback is the never-taken-a-snap-in-college freshman Garrett Nussmeier.

Hopes of returning to the glory days of 2019 (everyone is hoping for that, one way or another) and a dark-horse run at the College Football Playoff? Could still happen, but now marinating in a gumbo pot of anxiety. But it could just as easily have been Brennan. Beyond an Xs-and-Os standpoint, I expected Brennan would get the nod, all else being equal. The worry that had to gnaw at Orgeron was that if he picked Johnson as his No. 1 QB, Brennan might bolt to another school. Even on the eve of the season. It would have been, for lack of a better term, more politically prudent for Orgeron to pick the senior Brennan and make the sophomore Johnson wait his turn, just as long as he didn't vastly outperform the veteran in camp. Now, Brennan has to wait again. And you have to wonder if his turn at bat will ever come back around. - Baton Rouge Advocate

LSU quarterback Myles Brennan, a fifth-year senior competing to regain the starting job he lost to injury a season ago, now needs surgery to repair what coach Ed Orgeron called a severe left arm injury. Brennan's "timeline is yet to be determined," Orgeron said Monday. "Myles has done everything we have asked of him this summer and was in the fight to be the starting quarterback at LSU." Brennan's injury to his non-throwing arm means sophomore Max Johnson, who went 2-0 as a starter late last season, will enter the start of fall camp Friday with the inside track to start LSU's season opener Sept. 4 at UCLA. Orgeron had said he wouldn't announce a starter until the week of the UCLA game, but left little doubt it would be either Brennan or Johnson. Brennan played in just LSU's first three games in 2020, including much of his third game with the abdomen injury that forced him to miss the rest of the season. - AP College Football

Imagine a day, years from now, in which an athlete suffers an injury that tore abdominal muscles and ligaments and required surgery. The athlete visits the doctor's office, sits on the examination chair, and the doctor walks up and says, "you're gonna need Myles Brennan surgery." That hypothetical was almost possible. A brand new surgery was almost named after LSU's quarterback, whose season-ending abdominal injury against Missouri last season was so rare that it confounded every specialist he saw. Ed Orgeron's 2021: Winning expectations, 'sense of urgency' and AD's warnings to stay out of politics

Brennan said copies of his MRIs were sent to NFL and MLB franchises, golf and tennis trainers. None of them had ever seen an injury like it before. In an interview with reporters Thursday, Brennan said the doctor he visited in Baton Rouge told him that he had two options: 1) let the injury heal on its own, or 2) undergo a surgery that would be the first of its kind. "Personally, I've never done surgery on this," Brennan said the doctor told him. "So, we'd be naming the surgery after you if you wanted to." - Baton Rouge Advocate

If Myles Brennan is healthy Saturday, he has LSU's starting quarterback spot locked down - but if there's any measure of doubt, he's staying on the sidelines while his team plays Auburn. "If Myles is healthy, he's our first team quarterback," LSU coach Ed Orgeron said. "But I'm not putting him in if he's not 100 percent." Brennan tore his abdomen muscle when Missouri safety Tyree Gillespie collided hard with his shoulder in the first quarter of the LSU-Missouri game on Oct. 10. He played through the pain that day but did not return to practice once it was over. Even before the game against Florida was postponed, Brennan was not set to start. When LSU faced South Carolina on Oct. 24, freshman TJ Finley took the field instead of Brennan. Finley completed 17 of 21 pass attempts for 265 yards and also rushed for 24 yards. "I was so proud, so pleased with TJ's poise," Orgeron said. "He looked like a veteran out there." Despite his good game, if Brennan is ready, Finley will move to backup quarterback. This week will be all about evaluating Brennan while prepping Finley and freshman quarterback Max Johnson for the possibility Brennan isn't ready. - Montgomery Advertiser

Brennan stepped into his throws Saturday night, completing 23 of 37 passes for 337 yards and four touchdowns, a stat line that might have looked more impressive if not for several dropped passes. Brennan didn't play a perfect game. In the second quarter, he sailed a pass behind his intended target. Vanderbilt picked off the throw, setting up the Commodores' only touchdown. Brennan also missed a few throws, including one to Kirklin in the end zone early in the third quarter. LSU settled for a field goal on the drive. "Obviously, that interception was not a good decision," Orgeron said. "There was two or three times he could've made better decisions, but he threw some good balls."

Brennan responded on LSU's next possession after the interception. With LSU on its own 49-yard line, Brennan faked a handoff to running back John Emery. He dropped three steps as the play developed. Vanderbilt created pressure on Brennan's blind side. An outside linebacker sprinted around Emery, but as he reached Brenan's feet, the quarterback stepped into a throw, whipping a pass 22 yards downfield. The ball smacked into the hands of wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr., who ran past four defenders for a 51-yard score. "Myles delivered," Orgeron said. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Myles Brennan threw for 337 yards and four touchdowns and No. 20 LSU bounced back to beat Vanderbilt 41-7 on Saturday night. The defending national champs never trailed after losing their season opener last week to Mississippi State. LSU also extended its winning streak over the Commodores to nine in a series it leads 24-7-1. The Tigers outgained Vanderbilt 498-266, and the defense came up with two interceptions and a pair of sacks. Terrace Marshall Jr. finished with two TDs on two catches, and Jontre Kirklin had 65 yards receiving and two TD catches, the second a toe-tapper at the back of the end zone off a flea flicker. John Emery ran for 103 yards and a TD.

Vanderbilt (0-2) had its chances with freshman Ken Seals making his home debut. When Randall Haynie picked off an overthrown pass from Brennan, Seals hit tight end Ben Bresnahan with an 8-yard TD pass to pull the Commodores to 14-7 in the second quarter. They never scored again. Freshman Donovan Kaufman, a Louisiana native, returned a kickoff 58 yards, and the Commodores had first-and-goal at the 9. Seals' pass to Chris Pierce on third-and-goal at the 4 was a bit high, and Pierson Cooke pulled a 22-yard field goal wide left. Todd Harris Jr. picked off Seals' pass at the goal line early in the fourth quarter. - LSU/AP College Football

Quarterback Myles Brennan set an LSU record for completions (27), attempts (46) and yards passing (345) by a first-time starter, but he finished with an uneven performance, struggling to spark LSU's offense. Brennan's ability to do those things will make him a better quarterback and improve LSU's offense. - Baton Rouge Advocate

With all that LSU has lost, plus the lost time in the offseason, the efficiency and chemistry of the passing attack with new quarterback Myles Brennan and his new wide receivers simply isn't there yet. "He's learning the offense," Orgeron said of Brennan. "I think the spring kind of hurt for him not being with us, or us not practicing with his receivers, but I think he did a good job of catching up during COVID and catching up in the summertime. He was very accurate with the football in all three scrimmages. The only thing that we don't know, and I do believe that he's going to do very well, is how he's going to do in the fire. The only way to know that is put him in the fire. "I think that takes time for him and his receivers to get the timing down and hopefully he can improve in that throughout the year." No Joe Burrow, no Ja'Marr Chase, no Justin Jefferson, even no Clyde Edwards-Helaire, the running back who often got split out wide to the boundary in LSU's five-receiver sets. That obviously changes things immensely. - Baton Rouge Advocate

LSU is the first defending national champion to start the following season outisde the top five since Auburn in 2011 (post-Cam Newton, the Tigers were ranked No. 23 in the preseason poll). LSU lost a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback and No. 1 overall NFL draft pick, too, in Joe Burrow. Myles Brennan is the new QB for the Tigers, who had 14 players selected in the last draft, including five in the first round. There is plenty of talent coming back with All-America receiver Ja'Marr Chase, cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., and nose tackle Tyler Shelvin.   LSU football had its second Heisman winner in school history last season in Joe Burrow, but another Tiger will be in contention to make it back-to-back years for the program. Burrow's presumed successor, Myles Brennan, currently has the third best betting odds to win college football's most prestige individual award, according to BetOnline.ag. Brennan's odds as of Thursday were 14/1, meaning a bet of $1 would net $14 in profit. Those odds falls behind Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence at 2/1 and Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler at 9/1. Miami's D'Eriq King and Texas' Sam Ehlinger both have 14/1 odds. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Myles Brennan had to get creative - and pick up a chainsaw - during quarantine this offseason, but in the end LSU's quarterback hit his mark: 220 pounds on the scale. The junior quarterback detailed the hard work it's taken to bulk up after arrived on campus as a stringy 6-4, 175-pound freshman in a wide-ranging interview on the program's Hey Fightin' podcast this week. He even got the nickname the "Slim Reaper," a nickname that gained popularity to describe NBA star Kevin Durant.

"It was very difficult from then to now. My body just isn't made to have a wide frame," Brennan said. "I ate more food than anybody can imagine, and the strength staff was on me every single day since I got here. I was in here at 6 o'clock eating in front of the strength coaches, drinking protein shakes in front of them at 6 o'clock before class." Brennan recalls one such early-morning feast when he put down four breakfast sandwiches and four protein shakes before running off to class. But before he could get there he was forced to take a detour to a bathroom because he couldn't keep all the food down. "I didn't tell anybody," Brennan said laughing, "because I would've had to restart." - Baton Rouge Advocate

Myles Brennan On Burrow Questions/Comparisons..."I have the utmost respect for Joe and what he did here. But when I get asked those questions I try and tell myself, 'he's gone. He's no longer here. He's no longer going to be playing for LSU." "It's time for me to step into that role and I can talk about what he did, but talking about even last year's team and what we did last year and talking about Joe is not going to help us in the future. It's not going to do any good for us reflecting on what we did last year. Joe is going to get all the credit he deserves in interviews and things like that, but at the same time, it's my time and I fully understand that. And I'm going to do everything in my power to take full advantage of that." Despite offensive losses, Steve Ensminger says LSU isn't changing: "We found what fits us" - Baton Rouge Advocate

Regardless of when or how the season starts, though, LSU will feature a new quarterback starting under center after Heisman Trophy-winner Joe Burrow was drafted No. 1 overall to the Cincinnati Bengals. The most likely candidate for the job is rising junior Myles Brennan, whom Linehan said he's come away impressed with during limited meetings before coronavirus concerns cut off any in-person workouts or coaching sessions. Brennan's significant time on the field mopping up the end of LSU's many blowout wins also offers more tape than most new coaches would have to survey the on-field abilities of a backup in line for his first starting opportunity.

"You see he's ready to take the reins....He recognizes what we're doing and he's really a bright kid, picks up stuff right away, the new things," Linehan said of Brennan. "He's got a really good grasp of concepts and I'm really impressed with how he throws it. So I'm excited to see what Myles can do." As Burrow's backup, Brennan saw time in eight of LSU's 15 games in 2019, completing 24 of 40 passes -- mostly to fellow backups -- for 353 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Behind Brennan are a handful of highly touted young arms, including 4-star recruits Peter Parrish and Max Johnson, and 3-star recruit TJ Finley -- all entering their freshman or redshirt freshman seasons. - Baton Rouge Advocate

With Burrow, wide receiver Justin Jefferson and starting tailback Clyde Edwards-Helaire all taken in the first round of last week's NFL draft among eight departed 2019 starters, the offensive task before LSU looks daunting. But that hasn't stopped Ensminger from throwing down a challenge to his offensive players. "I challenged out offense last year with the goal of being No. 1 in the country," he said. "I challenged this group to break every record we set last year. I don't know if we can achieve it, but we're going to go after it." What Ensminger doesn't want is for new starting quarterback Myles Brennan to try to be what Burrow was.

"I've told him, 'You don't have to be Joe Burrow. Just be the best Myles Brennan you can be and it will be good enough, I promise you," he said. Ensminger said he has seen a lot of growth in Brennan as Burrow's understudy. "I think it's his composure, competitiveness and his study of football," he said. "I know he can throw the ball. In the three (spring) practices we had he was patient in the pocket and had a great demeanor, checking to plays and sliding the center to put us in the right protection. I look forward to him keeping it going." - Baton Rouge Advocate

LSU coach Ed Orgeron has often praised Myles Brennan for his work behind the scenes as a backup quarterback to Joe Burrow in the past two seasons. Orgeron has called Brennan a "championship quarterback," a player he trusted to lead the Tigers after a record-breaking 2019 season that included Burrow winning the school's second Heisman Trophy. The fifth-year head coach repeated his confidence during a news conference Wednesday, previewing LSU's spring football practice, which begins on Saturday. "I expect Myles to explode," Orgeron said, "and I expect him to do all the things that he needs to do to be a great quarterback."

"Unless somebody beats him out," Orgeron said, the 6-foot-4, 207-pound junior will take all the first-team reps in the practices leading up to LSU's spring game at A.W. Mumford Stadium on April 18. Such a development is unlikely, since there isn't a quarterback on the roster who has taken a snap in a college football game. Incoming freshmen TJ Finley and Max Johnson will take second-team snaps, Orgeron said, and will compete with redshirt freshman Peter Parrish for the backup spot. - Baton Rouge Advocate
