Former OU defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey was the third player off the board on the final day of the draft, selected in Round 4 by the Cleveland Browns with the 108th overall pick. And when time came for Winfrey to acquaint himself with his new home, on a Zoom call with local Cleveland media, the two-time All-Big 12 tackle brought the energy as he answered questions while pacing around his Illinois home. "This is me - 100 percent concentrated. No smoke," Winfrey told reporters. "This is how I wake up. Juiced up. To be honest, I just woke up at 10:40 a.m. It is 11:30 a.m. and I am juiced. No coffee needed." After two seasons with the Sooners in Norman, Winfrey shot up draft boards with an eye-catching Senior Bowl showing in February. But he slid in Rounds 2 and 3 Friday night and entered Saturday undrafted before the Browns came calling early on Day 3. By the time Winfrey spoke with reporters Saturday afternoon, he wasn't sweating that. "I expected to go early. But to be honest, I needed this," Winfrey said. "This was a wake-up call and this gave me all of the fuel and all of the fire I needed to come into the league and dominate. So I wouldn't change a thing." - Tulsa World

2021 ALL-BIG 12 SECOND TEAM (COACHES): DL Perrion Winfrey, Oklahoma,...Winfrey, a senior from Maywood, Ill., has been a force on the defensive line this season. He has started all 12 games and ranks third on the team with his 11.0 tackles for loss and 5. 5 sacks and has notched two QB hurries and forced a fumble. Nearly half of his total tackles this season (11 of 23) have been for lost yardage. The forced fumble behind the line of scrimmage resulted in a safety last week against Oklahoma State. - Oklaho ma Football

Perrion Winfrey is a big fan of horror movies. So for the Big 12 Championship Game last season - and for individual photos leading into this season - the OU defensive lineman wore thigh pads that showed through a silhouette of a pair of classic horror ch aracters. On the right - Michael Myers from the Halloween franchise. On the left - Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th. It was a frightening addition to an already intimidating look for the 6-foot-4, 292-pound Winfrey. "I love the theme of scary movies," Winfrey said. "Honestly, I feel like any advantage I can have over my opponent is one up and honestly, I feel like my appearance is (intimidating) to people and they fear myself just by appearance. "So I honestly did it just as an appearance thing." Win frey's game had plenty of bite last year, especially near the end.But this season, Winfrey hopes to strike much more fear in the hearts of opponents. "He needs to be a dude. He needs to play how he looks," Sooners defensive line coach Calvin Thibo deaux said. "He's a guy who can do it and do it at a high level. We're expecting big things from him. I think if he plays the way he's capable of, he's an NFL guy. That's what we expect from him." Plenty of people expect that from Winfrey, who is a popul ar pick to be a first-round NFL Draft selection next spring after the improvement he showed last season - when he finished with 19 tackles, six for loss, and three pass breakups. - Daily Oklahoman

While most on this list are looking for a breakthrough to become major contributors, Winfrey is looking to take the next step and go from a solid piece of the defense into a destructive force. Winfrey's build, at 6-foot-4, 292 pounds, strength, and agili ty give him the opportunity to make a significant step forward and become the Sooners' best defensive lineman in quite some time, and potentially work his way not only into the first round of next year's NFL Draft but possibly high in the first round. - Daily Oklahoman

A flurry of NFL draft declarations hit Oklahoma as it wrapped its 2020 season and followed it into the offseason. Perhaps Perrion Winfrey, the first-year Sooner defensive lineman, could have joined the likes of defensive end Ronnie Perkins and defensive backs Tre Brown and Tre Norwood in taking a crack at the pros. Winfrey, a second-team All-Big 12 selection, had a knack for getting in the backfield. He accumulated 19 tackles, six tackles for loss and three pass breakups in his debut OU season. He also blocked a field-goal attempt against Texas during the third of four overtime periods in the 2020 Red River Showdown.Winfrey, a 6-foot-3 defensive tackle starter, decided it wasn't quite time to leave school. "Honestly, I didn't explore it all too much," Winfrey said. "I wanted to stay another year, and perfect my craft even more." The move ought to serve Winfrey well a year from now. His position coach, Calvin Thibodeaux, certainly sees a gifted player, who could benefit from more time to develop both physically and mentally. Winfrey, who was listed at 297 pounds last season, said he's focused on his weight and improving his flexibility, which he felt hindered his ability at times to finish plays in the backfield. - Norman Transcript

OU is finding leaders in the trenches, including one that just arrived to Norman in January. OU defensive line coach Calvin Thibodeaux said senior LaRon Stokes has been a "quiet leader" and a reliable presence through fall camp. Stokes started 10 games l ast season for the Sooners, picking up 15 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss. The other leader in the unit is newcomer Perrion Winfrey. "Perrion Winfrey, when everything's on, he can do it," Thibodeaux said during a Wednesday Zoom video conference with med ia. "He can do it at a really high level." Winfrey, who was the 2020 class' No. 1-rated junior college prospect by 247Sports.com and ESPN, enrolled at OU during the spring via Iowa Western Community College. He chose the Sooners over offers from the like s of Alabama, LSU and Texas. The junior defensive lineman posted promising numbers at the junior-college level over the past two years, including 55 tackles, 23 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. - Norman Transcript
