Pitt senior cornerback Damarri Mathis vows never to box again - even as a conditioning exercise - after suffering a season-ending shoulder injury last year while working out at home. "No one ever heard that story?" coach Pat Narduzzi said during his post-practice news conference. "So, you know how kids are. You have those boxing things, you punch the hands (of a partner). It wasn't really in a ring or anything, but just sparring, I guess, and just working on your hand quickness and all that stuff in his front yard - not with (Pitt strength coach Michael Stacchiotti)." Apparently, Mathis missed the hands. "You talk to boxers. You can dislocate your shoulder from, must have missed the hand, I guess, I don't know," Narduzzi said. Mathis, who is fully recovered, said he never has boxed in a real match, and doesn't plan to take up the sport.

"Boxing, I'm done with that. None of that," he said. "Anything from now on that I do is only football-related. I'm sticking to that. Just conditioning." If not for the injury, Mathis might be in the NFL this season. From 2017-19, he played in 36 games, with 12 starts and three interceptions. "Pretty good corner," Narduzzi said. "We're just getting him back into great football shape. We're happy where he is. Again, it was an innocent mistake. He's working to get better. He's just not allowed to box anymore." - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

While chatting with reporters Tuesday on a video conference call, Damarri Mathis admitted he was hiding something. "I probably have a blank face right now," he said, "but I have a lot of enthusiasm. You're going to see that on Saturdays. I promise you that. I don't like talking that much. I want to show what I'm going to do." Pitt's senior cornerback said his face is hiding a lot of backed-up energy he hopes to unleash, perhaps as soon as Thursday, when the Panthers strap on pads for the first time in spring practice. Mathis, who started 10 games in 2019 and was ready to step up among the ACC's best cornerbacks last summer, sat out the entire season with a shoulder injury that occurred before the season. He said he is healed now. He had planned to join veteran teammates Damar Hamlin, Paris Ford and Jason Pinnock in 2020 to give Pitt an experienced secondary and, then, aim for the NFL. - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Pitt senior cornerback Damarri Mathis will miss the 2020 season due to a non-football related injury. Mathis (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) played in all 13 games last season, starting 10 contests at corner. He totaled 23 tackles, two TFLs, 11 pass breakups and two interceptions on the year. One of the Panthers' most experienced defensive backs, Mathis has been an active contributor since his true freshman season in 2017. He has played in 36 contests over the past three years, making 12 starts. "We are certainly disappointed for Damarri," Coach Pat Narduzzi said. "Fortunately, he still has a redshirt season available in addition to the eligibility relief the NCAA will provide this year." - Pitt Football

  08/26/20 - CB Damarri MathisrSr/2022, Pittsburgh, 5-11, 198 (DS#12 CB) + More +

Mathis, a projected senior starter, will miss the upcoming season due to a "non-football related injury," the program announced Tuesday afternoon. A 10-game starter in 2019, Mathis was expected to lead a thin cornerback group alongside veteran Jason Pinnock. Now, the position is shrouded in doubt with the season opener less than three weeks away. Mathis will remain a senior should he return to Pitt in 2021. The NCAA approved an eligibility freeze because of how COVID-19 has (and still can) affect fall sports. Without the rule change, Mathis would have to burn his remaining redshirt to play in 2021. But whether or not Mathis plays in 2021 - he'll turn 22 before the season starts - is an issue for another day. In the short-term, the Panthers need to find out how to cope without one of the ACC's best cover corners. Mathis, who has played in 36 games over the last three years, logged two interceptions and 11 pass breakups in 2019, which ranked second on the team. - Pittsburgh Post Gazette
