Iowa running back Tyler Goodson announced Friday he will declare for the 2022 NFL draft and won't play in the Citrus Bowl against Kentucky on Jan. 1. "Similar to a lot of young kids growing up, I have always dreamed of the opportunity to play in the National Football League and I am beyond grateful that the time is quickly approaching," Goodson tweeted. "I will forever consider myself a Hawkeye and look forward to making my family, friends and Hawkeye Nation proud at the next level." Goodson has led Iowa in rushing the past three seasons. He ran for 1,151 yards and six touchdowns in 2021 and 2,551 yards and 18 touchdowns in his career. "Tyler has been a valuable member of our program throughout his career, and we wish him nothing but success as he pursues his next phase in life and football," coach Kirk Ferentz said. "Tyler enjoys the game of football. His passion and energy are evident on a daily basis, and we are appreciative of his many contributions to our program. It has been a pleasure having Tyler and his family as part of our program." - AP College Football

Spencer Petras plunged 2 yards for a touchdown with 2:58 left to give 17th-ranked Iowa its first lead, and the Hawkeyes came back from a 15-point deficit in the third quarter to beat Nebraska 28-21 on Friday. Iowa won the border battle for the seventh straight year, but not before Jermari Harris intercepted Logan Smothers' pass at the Iowa 2 with 43 seconds to play. The Hawkeyes (10-2, 7-2) stayed alive in the Big Ten West race and now need Minnesota to beat Wisconsin on Saturday to go to the conference championship game next week in Indianapolis.

The loss was another gut punch to Nebraska (3-9, 1-8) in its worst season since 1957. The Cornhuskers, who won't go to a bowl for a fifth straight year, finished with losses in six straight games and eight of nine. Their nine losses were by a total of 56 points. Tyler Goodson ran for 156 yards on 23 carries to become Iowa's first 1,000-yard rusher since Akrum Wadley in 2017. Smothers, making his first start in place of the injured Adrian Martinez, threw for 199 yards and ran 24 times for 64 yards and two touchdowns. Iowa used a blocked punt returned for a touchdown, two field goals and a safety to wipe out a 21-6 deficit and tie it 21-21 with 7:21 left. - Iowa/AP College Football

Iowa is gearing up for its biggest home game since the 1980s, Cincinnati has its highest ranking in 12 years and Clemson is on the outside looking in at The Associated Press college football poll for the first time since 2014. Alabama and Georgia are the only constants during this topsy-turvy college football season. They held down the top two spots for a fifth straight week in the AP Top 25, which is presented by Regions Bank. Alabama received 53 of a possible 62 first-place votes Sunday, with Georgia picking up the rest.

After those two teams, the movement up and down and in and out of the Top 25 was about what would be expected after a week in which nine ranked teams lost, including four in the top 10. Through the first five weeks of the season, 34 ranked teams have lost, the most in poll history. Iowa leapfrogged Penn State to take the No. 3 spot after its 51-14 road win over previously unbeaten Maryland. The Hawkeyes have their highest ranking since 2015. Penn State beat Indiana 24-0 at home and remained No. 4. No. 5 Cincinnati, coming off a 24-13 road win over Notre Dame, has its best ranking since Brian Kelly's 2009 Bearcats were No. 4 in the first week of November. Oklahoma, Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan and BYU round out the top 10. - AP College Football

Tyler Goodson saw nothing in front of him but the end zone - and that was before he got the ball. "Pre-snap, I saw it," the Iowa running back said, smiling. The play that turned into a 46-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter of No. 5 Iowa's 30-7 victory over Kent State on Saturday, was set up perfectly, Goodson said, with the Golden Flashes heading away from him. All he had to do was get the pitch from quarterback Spencer Petras. "Which I almost dropped, by the way," Goodson said, still smiling. Goodson caught the pitch, then ran for the touchdown, the first of his three rushing scores.

The Hawkeyes (3-0) have won nine straight games. They have won 14 consecutive nonconference games, the second-longest current streak in the nation. Iowa's first two wins of the season, against ranked teams Indiana and Iowa State, were built on its defense, which forced seven turnovers in the two games. It was important to get a balanced offense, and the Hawkeyes did in this game - 206 rushing yards and 212 passing yards. "We still have a lot of things to work on," Ferentz said. "The execution is still not there. But yeah, there were some good things going on, kind of subtly. It was good to get Tyler going a little bit better." Goodson's first touchdown gave Iowa a 9-0 lead. "We liked that play going into the game, but I didn't know that was going to be a touchdown," Petras said. "That was a heck of a job by Tyler to use his speed to get to the end zone." Goodson added a 35-yard scoring run in the third quarter, then had a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to close the scoring. Goodson had just 154 rushing yards in Iowa's first two wins over Indiana and Iowa State. - Iowa/AP College Football

Tyler Goodson ran for 87 of his 111 yards in the second half and Zach VanValkenburg recovered Adrian Martinez's late fumble to secure Iowa's 26-20 win over Nebraska on Saturday. The Hawkeyes (4-2, 4-2 Big Ten) extended their win streak to four games and have beaten the Cornhuskers (1-4, 1-4) six years in a row. Iowa was looking to add to its six-point lead when Keith Duncan's 51-yard field-goal attempt bounced off the cross bar with 2:02 left. The Cornhuskers then drove from their 32 to the Iowa 39 before Martinez fumbled under pressure. Iowa ran out the last 1:18.

Tied 13-13 at halftime, Nebraska took its first lead on its opening drive of the third quarter. Utilizing a quick tempo, the Huskers capped an eight-play, 70-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown run by Rahmir Johnson. Iowa answered with a 14-play, 66-yard drive. Mekhi Sargen punctuated the drive with a touchdown, and Duncan followed with field goals of 48 and 37 yards. Spencer Petras completed 18 of 30 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown, with one interception. Martinez, back as the starter after two games, was 18 of 20 for 174 yards. He also ran for 28 yards and a score. - Iowa/AP College Football

Tyler Goodson rushed for a career-high 142 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, and Iowa's defense clamped down hard on Minnesota for a 35-7 victory on Friday night that gave the Hawkeyes possession of the Floyd of Rosedale trophy for the sixth season. Jack Koerner and Riley Moss each picked off Tanner Morgan for the Gophers quarterback's first two-interception game in two years, and Zach VanValkenburg had three of the team's four sacks.

Iowa's defense has a streak of 11 straight games with at least one interception. The Hawkeyes (2-2) had to wait to hoist the 98-pound bronze pig until they reached the locker room out of respect to the virus protocols required to get the season going, but their 16th win in the last 20 games against their border-state rival to the north was just as sweet. Minnesota's Mohamed Ibrahim rushed for 144 yards on 33 attempts, but the junior tailback who entered the evening with the highest rushing average in the FBS didn't come close to controlling the game like the last two weeks. - AP College Football

Tyler Goodson ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns as Iowa throttled Michigan State 49-7 on Saturday. Goodson led a balanced Iowa offense that racked up a season-high point total. The sophomore's outing included a career-long 71-yard scamper, which set the Hawkeyes (1-2, 1-2 Big Ten) up for their sixth touchdown of the day. Goodson scored on a 3-yard run early in the first to spark Iowa's scoring. Quarterback Spencer Petras found wideout Brandon Smith to give Iowa a 14-0 with 4:31 left in the first quarter.

Another touchdown run by Goodson put Iowa ahead 21-0 in the second, but the Hawkeye defense and special teams stepped to the plate. Punt returner Charlie Jones took a kick 54 yards to the end zone. Minutes later, cornerback Riley Moss picked off Spartan quarterback Rocky Lombardi, returning the interception 54 yards for the score. It was a shaky outing for Michigan State's junior quarterback. Lombardi completed 17 of his 37 throws for 227 yards and three interceptions, just one game removed from a 323-yard, three-touchdown performance against No. 23 Michigan. - AP College Football

Earlier this week, Samson Evans became the third scholarship running back in the last nine months to voluntarily leave the Iowa football program. The decision, though, should be viewed as a sign of the top-end strength in Derrick Foster's room - not any dysfunction within it. While Foster correctly acknowledges the Hawkeyes' run-game production fell short of internal expectations in 2019 (90th in FBS at 3.95 yards per carry), there's no doubt the room is in its best shape in three seasons, buoyed by the emergence of Tyler Goodson.

And Hawkeye fans should be comforted to hear that during the COVID-19 pandemic, Goodson has been bulking up in suburban Atlanta while working out with a personal trainer and Mercer-bound younger brother Taylor. Foster, in an interview with the Register for Wednesday's Hawk Central radio show on KXnO in Des Moines, reported that Goodson's body weight is in the "198 to 200 pounds" range on his 5-foot-10 frame. He was between 190 and 195 last season as a true freshman. It's an incremental gain designed to improve Goodson's durability. "We felt like he had that frame to be able to do that and not lose any step, any speed," Foster said. "He's still got great quickness and great feet." - Iowa City Press-Citizen
