The Miami Hurricanes are trying to replace a pair of record-setting wide receivers this preseason. Their best option at a replacement might be their tight end. Will Mallory is one of the best in the country at his position, and both Josh Gattis and Steph en Field believe the star tight end can become Tyler Van Dyke's No. 1 target in 2022. "Absolutely," said Gattis, the offensive coordinator. "Will Mallory is a special talent." Said Field, the tight ends coach: "The opportunity is really there, especially in coach Gattis' system." Last year, Mallory finished third on the team with 30 receptions and three touchdown catches, and fourth with 347 receiving yards and started every game for the first time in his career, taking over the top job after former tig ht end Brevin Jordan left for the NFL. - Miami Herald

2022 PRESEASON JOHN MACKEY AWARD WATCH LIST: WILL MALLORY, MIAMI,...A fifth-year senior out of Jacksonville, Fla., Mallory is already among the most distinguished players in the country at his position. The 6-foot-5, 245-pounder has 73 receptions for 1,0 06 yards and 11 touchdowns over his four seasons at The U. Mallory is coming off the finest year of his career in 2021, as he posted highs in catches (30), yards (347), starts (12) and longest reception (57), while matching his top mark in touchdowns (fo ur). Since the inauguration of the recognition in 2000, a Miami player has made the John Mackey Award finalist list six times and claimed one trophy. Miami returns the majority of its tight ends from last season. In addition to that, they have the most continuity, coaching-wise, as tight ends coach Stephen Field is the lone member of Manny Diaz's staff who Cristobal kept on his on-field staff. "Coach Field is my guy," tight end Will Mallory said on March 9. "He's been here the last three years and I wouldn't really want to be with anyone else. Him having a previous relationship with coach Cristobal, they work well together. They know how they operate . ... He's just a great coach and great person. I was really happy to have him here.Mallory, a fifth-year senior, led the group last year, racking up 347 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 30 receptions. "I want to be more effective in the run game and I want to be that pass-catcher that [quarterback Tyler Van Dyke] can trust all the time," Mallory said. "So that starts with me putting in the work to be able to do that, and I know I can." The always charismatic, always outspoken, mostly upbeat Brevin Jordan was the Hurricanes tight end you couldn't help noticing, whether on the field making NFL-type moves, on the sideline injured or in a Zoom teleconference prompting hearty laughs. Now, i t's Will Mallory's stage, and Jordan's 6-5, 245-pound talented close friend and former roommate, who missed the spring recovering from shoulder surgery, is back at full strength and determined to make a grand entrance."It's definitely different," Mallory, a 22-year-old fourth-year junior, told reporters last weekend at fall camp, when asked about the void left by Jordan, drafted in the fifth round by the Houston Texans. "Been living with Brevin - I've been with him since I got here. But being the main guy is exactly why I wanted to come here. "It's my shot, my turn, I'm ready for it. I've got a great group of guys behind me, too, that can contribute. I'm excited for the opportunity to step up for this team." Last season, while Jordan was catchin g 38 passes for 576 yards and seven touchdowns and dragging defenders along with him in eight games, Mallory was catching 22 passes for 329 yards and four touchdowns in 11 games. - Miami Herald

It hasn't been the easiest junior season for Will Mallory. Once again, he's stuck behind Brevin Jordan on the depth chart. His best play of the season - a 74-yard touchdown catch against the Louisville Cardinals in September - was wiped out because of a holding call. He got hurt in the Miami Hurricanes' blowout win against the Florida State Seminoles last month and entered Saturday with just three catches for 32 yards and a touchdown. He knew this would finally be his opportunity. Jordan was out because of an apparent right shoulder injury and Mallory became an important part of Miami's struggling passing attack. In one game, the tight end nearly topped all of his season marks to help the Hurricanes beat the Pittsburgh Panthers, 31-19. "When you've got a player like Brevin who's out for the week, someone's got to fill those big shoes because he's a heck of a player," Mallory said. "I haven't gotten as many passes or stuff this year, but I knew had to step up." Mallory finished with two catches for a t eam-high 51 yards and two touchdowns in his second start of the season at Hard Rock Stadium. - Miami Herald
