Tyler Badie is making the most of his first season as Missouri's featured back. The senior from New Orleans is the only player in the country to run for at least 200 yards in four different games this season. His latest was Saturday, when he carried 34 times for 209 in a 31-28 win over South Carolina. Badie came into the year having never run for more than 79 yards in any of his 34 career games. He's gone over 200 against Central Michigan, North Texas, Vanderbilt and the Gamecocks. Interestingly, his highest rushing total in his six other games was 81 yards. His 123.9 yards per game ranks first in the Southeastern Conference and fourth nationally. Badie in his first three years at Missouri had primarily been a changeup from starter Larry Rountree, now a rookie with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Badie is among three SEC players since 2000 to record four 200-yard games in a season and is the first to do it nationally since Oklahoma State's Chuba Hubbard and Wisconsin's Jonathan Taylor in 2019. Badie has 1,239 rushing yards this season and needs 340 over the next two games and a possible bowl to break Devin West's single-season school record of 1,578 in 1998. Also turning in 200-yard rushing games this past week were UNLV's Charles Williams, who had 266 on 38 carries against Hawaii on Saturday and Central Michigan's Lew Nichols, who had 215 on 43 runs against Kent State on Wednesday. Nichols' 43 carries matched Duke's Mataeo Durant for most in a game this season. No one has had more attempts since 2017. - AP College Football

Tyler Badie rushed 34 times for 209 yards and a touchdown and Missouri held off South Carolina's fourth-quarter charge to defeat the Gamecocks 31-28 on Saturday. The Tigers (5-5, 2-4 Southeastern Conference) built a 17-point lead when Badie scored on a 19-yard run with 12:31 left in the game. That's when the opportunistic Gamecocks (5-5, 2-5 SEC) made things interesting by converting two Missouri turnovers into touchdowns and slicing the deficit to three points with 4:32 left. But they never saw the ball again, thanks to Badie, who rushed for 63 yards on the final drive.

The game turned late in the third quarter when blitzing safety Martez Manuel jarred the ball from South Carolina quarterback Jason Brown and defensive end Trajan Jeffcoat recovered in the end zone to give the Tigers a 10-point lead. Missouri's Connor Bazelak completed 15 of 23 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Mookie Cooper had three catches for 72 yards and a touchdown. Brown, who was making his second start of the year, completed 16 of 30 passes for 193 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Josh Vann had five catches for 62 yards and a touchdown. But the Gamecocks rushed for just 57 yards against a defense that entered the game allowing 270 yards per game on the ground. - Missouri/AP College Football

Tyler Badie set the offensive pace for the Missouri Tigers on Saturday afternoon with two rushing touchdowns and 294 total yards in a 37-28 Southeastern Conference win over Vanderbilt. Badie, who was leading the SEC with 143.6 all-purpose yards per game heading in, touched the ball 39 times - rushing for 254 yards on 31 carries and catching nine passes for 40 yards. "Tyler Badie is a great player," Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz said. "I have been saying it for a long time. He is the best player nobody is talking about. "He is really the engine that drives us. He has a big heart. He is a competitor. He wants to win. I want to win. This team wants to win." After allowing Missouri (4-4, 1-3) to take a 10-0 first-quarter lead, the Commodores rallied. An interception by Vanderbilt's Max Worship at the Commodores' 2-yard line set up a scoring drive, culminating with Mike Wright hitting Cam Johnson over the middle for a 7-yard TD.

The Commodores (2-7, 0-5), who have lost 18 straight SEC games, pulled ahead 14-10 in the second quarter on a 10-yard run by Patrick Smith. After a fake Vanderbilt field-goal attempt resulted in a 5-yard rushing loss by kicker Joseph Bulovas, Missouri took over with 15 seconds left in the first half. That was enough time for Connor Bazelak to fire a 45-yard scoring strike to Keke Chism, giving the Tigers a 17-14 lead at halftime. Missouri extended its lead to 24-14 on a 15-yard TD run by Badie with 5:28 left in the third quarter. Mike Wright connected with Gavin Schoenwald for a 4-yard TD - keyed by Wright's 70-yard run on first down - on the ensuing drive to pull the Commodores within three points heading into the final quarter. Wright also set up Vanderbilt's first TD with a 69-yard run. - Missouri/AP College Football

Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz called running back Tyler Badie the "least-talked-about great player in the country." Badie turned in another under-the-radar classic Saturday, rushing for a career-high 217 yards and scoring three touchdowns to lead the Tigers to a 48-35 victory over North Texas. "That sucker is gritty," Drinkwitz said. Badie averaged 12.8 yards per carry and had four runs of at least 30 yards. Late in the third quarter, North Texas defensive back DeShawn Gaddie stood up Badie and had him in a headlock before he somehow slipped free and ran for 42 yards. Even Badie struggled to explain that one. "I closed my eyes, and I wasn't down, so I just kept running," he said. Missouri (3-3) opened a 31-7 halftime lead, but North Texas (1-4) started hitting big pass plays to keep the score competitive.

Austin Aune completed 16 of 26 passes for 305 yards and four touchdowns. The Mean Green outgained the Tigers 493-474 but couldn't overcome three turnovers, including a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown by defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo. "We played hard and fought for each other, which is something we can build on," North Texas coach Seth Littrell said. "We played with emotion, but eventually we have to get out of our own way. We are taking turns making errors." Missouri quarterback Connor Bazelak completed 21 of 32 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns, including a 41-yard scoring pass to JJ Hester. Dawson Downing put the game away in the final four minutes with a 60-yard touchdown run. By that point, Badie was relaxing on the sideline, getting a well-earned break. He had a low profile entering the season because he backed up workhorse Larry Rountree the past three years. With Rountree moving on to the NFL's Los Angeles Chargers this year, Badie is getting his chance to shine. - Missouri/AP College Football

Tyler Badie's never had to be the dominating presence in Missouri's running back room before now. In his three-plus years in Columbia, there's always been a more experienced and older tailback in one of the seats next to him such as Larry Rountree and Damarea Crockett. Badie might not be the eldest among the running backs in 2021, with Dawson Downing entering his sixth season of college football, but he's expected to be the Tigers' primary running back for the first time. "I feel like titles are kind of overemphasized," Badie said. "I don't want to feel like I'm the guy. I just want to be a helpful person to the team. I feel like roles and titles get thrown around way too much and I feel like it's more of a team effort that helps the whole team win. That's the biggest thing for us." It's hard to ignore Badie's potential, however. In 2019, he was the first running back to lead the Tigers in pass receptions in a season since Brock Olivo accomplished the feat in 1995. Last season, Badie wasn't far off from headlining that category again with 28 catches, seven behind leader Keke Chism. He tied for the team lead in receiving touchdowns (2) alongside Tauskie Dove and Niko Hea. - Columbia Daily Tribune

Missouri is in a solid place to transition that production to the presumed No. 1 back, Tyler Badie, who played in a backup role the past three seasons, yet still saw consistent playing time. Badie was second on MU with 242 rushing yards and four touchdowns in 2020, with his skills also being used in the passing game, as well as kickoff returns. Badie, a senior, has a different skill set than Rountree, though they're a similar height and weight. Badie is 1 inch shorter and 10 pounds lighter. Rountree is the more physical runner of the two. He didn't mind plowing through a defender to get the extra yard. Badie prefers to run around you and tire defenders out. While Badie doesn't shy away from contact, he's got a lower center of gravity, making his speed a valuable asset. He's hard to tackle in open space, especially outside the tackles. Badie's overall production at Missouri has been solid. But rushing for 242 yards in 2020 falls short of the 437-yard and 457-yard marks he set in 2018 and 2019, respectively. - Columbia Daily Tribune

Missouri football coach Eli Drinkwitz has said for weeks that he needs to get Tyler Badie more involved in the offense. Throughout the season, it had been more of a to-do list item than an immediate, substantial plan. Mizzou finally made it happen Saturday against Vanderbilt. Badie caught seven passes for 102 yards and ran for 18 yards in Missouri's 41-0 rout. The junior running back usually is an aerial threat out of the backfield once or twice a game, complementing Larry Rountree's ground attack. But Saturday there was more balance for the Rountree-Badie tandem.

"We thought we were gonna be able to get (Badie) in some good matchups, and we were able to do so," Drinkwitz said. "I just think he does a really good job of creating matchup issues." Badie is the first Mizzou running back with 100 receiving yards in a game since Michael Jones tallied 118 in 1990. The last Mizzou receiver to reach triple digits in a game was Johnathon Johnson, last year against Mississippi. That was 12 games ago. - Post-Dispatch
