Mizzou cornerback Akalyeb Evans will enter the 2022 draft instead of returning to Mizzou for another season, he announced Thursday on social media. In 11 games this season, Evans made eight starts and finished with an interception, six breakups, two forc ed fumbles and 28 tackles. After accepting an invitation to the Senior Bowl, Evans sat out the home finale against Florida with a soft tissue injury then played just 12 snaps at Arkansas in MU's final regular-season game. - Post-Dispatch

Before transferring from Tulsa, the rangy 6-foot-2 cornerback had conversations with his family about turning pro but wanted to use his final year to compete against the best. He played in nine games last year and recorded 29 tackles, a forced fumble and three passes defended. "I knew I had three options: go to the NFL, go back to Tulsa and stay there for my last year, or transfer," he said. "I decided to come back just so I can grow as a person and grow into the young man that I know I will be and just develop as a player a little bit more." - Post-Dispatch

Slowly but surely, a trio of former Tulsa players and coaches found their new homes at Missouri. First it was secondary coach Aaron Fletcher, who came to Columbia the same week spring camp started this year. Then, through the transfer portal, two of Flet chers' former pupils reunited with him. Akayleb Evans committed to the Tigers in June, followed soon after by Allie Green. "They'll definitely be a tremendous help," Fletcher said. "... They're happy to be here. Coach (Eli) Drinkwitz has done a wonderful job with them. The team has done a wonderful job of welcoming those guys in. So it's been huge, it's been a blessing." Fletcher thought Green and Evans might've gone to the NFL before he left Tulsa, making a second chance to coach them even more special .Evans said he considered three options after the 2020 season ended - declaring for the NFL Draft, going back to Tulsa or transferring. Evans decided to remain in college, and he was a full participant in the Golden Hurricane's spring practice. Af ter the spring, Evans talked things over with his family and determined it was best to enter the transfer portal. "Even when I entered the portal, I wasn't 100% sure I was going to leave Tulsa," Evans said. "And I was upfront with that to the coaches the re." - Columbia Daily Tribune

An eventful offseason for the University of Tulsa is winding down, one that saw starting cornerbacks Akayleb Evans and Allie Green IV among those who hit the transfer portal. "I'm sure with some of the things that happened over the spring and summer here , people are out there thinking, 'What's going on? Why is this happening?'" seventh-year coach Philip Montgomery said. "This is just how it is (in the portal era). "You can have great relationships with all your players and all of that, but at some point in time they still may choose to do something else. And you can't do anything about it." Evans and Green, who spent four years at TU and started a combined 48 games while developing into NFL prospects, landed at Missouri. They followed former position c oach Aaron Fletcher, who left the Hurricane staff in December.TU signed an especially small class in December and February while expecting almost everyone to return amid the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA because of COVID-19. To add ress post-spring departures that included backups at cornerback and safety, Montgomery wound up getting an additional six players from the portal. "The portal's here to stay, so it's about learning how to try to adapt to it," Montgomery said. "It's going to open up some avenues and it's going to allow you to replace some things. The crowded pursuit of former Tulsa cornerback Akayleb Evans ended with a victory for Missouri on Friday night. Evans, a graduate transfer with two years of eligibility remaining, announced his commitment to the Tigers on Instagram. Evans previously named Notre Dame, Texas, Texas Tech, Missouri and Jackson State as his top five choices before making his decision. Notre Dame offered Evans a spot on its roster on May 17 and hosted him for a visit last week. But that wasn't enough for the Irish to land Evans and his 23 career starts. The 6-foot-2, 188-pound Evans played in 30 games with 73 tackles and 11 pass breakups across four seasons at Tulsa. He played in only three games as a junior in 2019 due to a shoulder injury, but started nine games for the Golden Hurricane last season. - Indianapolis Star/News

Over the course of 24 hours, Missouri football landed two commitments from the transfer portal who are both eligible to play starting this fall. First to commit was offensive lineman Connor Wood on Thursday, who played for two seasons at FCS-level Montan a State, including as an All-American honorable mention in 2019. Soon after Wood's commitment, Missouri head football coach Eli Drinkwitz posted two of his signature MU bat signal tweets, signaling another player was about to enter the Tigers' fold.
