As far as prestigious individual awards go, speedy kickoff returner Savon Scarver has won nearly every one of them during his record-setting career at Utah State. After all, Scarver was a consensus All-American as a sophomore for the Aggies in 2018, and the only way to accomplish that feat is to be recognized as a first-team All-American by three different official selectors (outlets). Additionally, the Las Vegas native garnered first-team all-Mountain West honors as a sophomore and junior, plus he rece ived the Jet Award in '18, which is given annually to the nation's most outstanding return specialist. The one major award that has eluded the former high school track & field state champion is Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Year. This i s Scarver's final chance for that accolade, but he is the favorite according to members of the media that cover the conference. The senior was selected as the league's preseason Special Teams Player of the Year, it was announced Thursday as part of the M ountain West's annual football media days. The two-day event concluded Thursday at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. - Herald Journal Tribune

Utah State and coach Gary Andersen are parting ways after a 0-3 start to the season for the Aggies. Andersen was in Year 2 of his second stint at Utah State. Co-defensive coordinator Frank Maile will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of t he season. Andersen, 56, went 26-24 at Utah State from 2009-12, leaving after an 11-2 season to take over at Wisconsin. Utah State went 7-6 last season in Andersen's return, a disappointing season with eventual first-round draft pick Jordan Love at quart erback. This season the Aggies have been on the short end of three lopsided games, most recently a 34-9 loss to Nevada on Thursday night. Andersen was hired back by Utah State after the 2018 season to replace Matt Wells. - AP College Football

Sen. Mitt Romney pushed his idea for how student-athletes could get paid for the use of their name, image and likeness on Tuesday - but college leaders at a Senate hearing didn't support his plan. Romney, R-Utah, during a Senate committee hearing Tuesday suggested Congress could increase the ability to compensate all members of a college football team. Furthermore, he suggested those with a very high earning potential, the type of athlete who could make it to the NFL, be capped at $50,000 per year. Afte r Romney finished, he posed that scenario directly to University of Wisconsin Chancellor Rebecca Blank. "I would oppose that type of thing, it becomes a pay-for-play system," Blank told Romney and the rest of the panel. "I have 860 student-athletes and I run those programs because I want those students to develop a set of skills that may not be developed in the classroom. I want them to learn self-discipline, self-confidence. This is about an educational process. The main benefit these students take awa y is their educational degree. It's not about coming here to earn money and to be an employee, so no, I wouldn't agree with you that I think that's a good idea." - Salt Lake Tribune

Savon Scarver has picked up where he left off as the nation's top kick returner. The Utah State junior ran back a kick 100 yards for a touchdown for the second time this season when he went the distance against Nevada on Saturday. He also had a 100 yarde r against Colorado State on Sept. 28. Scarver, who averaged 33.7 yards per return to lead the nation in 2018, is averaging a Football Bowl Subdivision-best 43.4 yards on eight returns this season. "He has unbelievable natural instincts," Aggies coach Gar y Andersen said. "He does a tremendous job of making things seem like not a big deal, but catching that ball when you're moving forward is such a part of being a great kickoff returner. He has 10 other guys that believe in him out on that field and know that if they get their block, there's a really good chance that some good things are going to happen. It becomes contagious."All five of Scarver's school-record five kick return touchdowns have come in his last 32 runbacks. "Every time he can catc h it, you better watch out," Andersen said. "The other guys deserve some credit also for making it so important for them to be at work every day in practice and knowing they have a big hitter behind them. It's awesome to watch him, it's like he's two gea rs ahead of everyone else on the field." The last two players to run back two kicks 100 yards in the same season were Tony Pollard of Memphis and Darius Phillips of Western Michigan in 2017. - AP College Football

Bri ght scored on runs of 67 and 9 yards - just 84 seconds apart - to make it 36-3 with 10:03 left in the game. Taua had 20 carries for 80 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter, for Nevada (4-3, 1-2). Utah State's two losses thi s year have both come on the road against Power 5 conference teams.
