Former Boise State football defensive back Kekaula Kaniho was named the 2021-22 Mountain West Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference announced Thursday. Kaniho is the fourth Bronco in five years to be bestowed the league's highest honor, joinin g Boise State women's cross country and track & field standouts Kendra Noneman (2019-20) and Allie Ostrander (2018-19) and former Bronco football center Mason Hampton (2017-18).In addition to athletic achievement, recipients of the MW Scholar-Athl ete Award must have a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade-point average, demonstrate leadership and exhibit good character and community involvement over the course of their intercollegiate career. The award includes a $2,500 postgraduate scholarship. Kaniho gr aduated in May 2021 with a degree in health science and a 3.96 grade-point average. During the fall, he was enrolled in courses from Boise State's College of Innovation and Design and earned a 4.0-semester grade-point average. - Idaho Statesman

Boise State defensive back Kekaula Kaniho was named to the 2021 Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, Thursday. Kaniho has been extremely active in the Boise State community outside of football. During his four years on campus, he visited local middle and elementa ry schools and was a great role model to younger students. He discussed healthy lifestyles, good sportsmanship and the benefits that play can have for everyone. Boise State defensive back Kekaula Kaniho was named to the 2021 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Preseason Watch List, Monday. The Jim Thorpe Award is given annually to the best defensive back in college football based on performance on the field, athletic abilit y and character. Established in 1986, the award is named after history's greatest all-around athlete, Jim Thorpe. The preseason watch list is comprised of 40 of the nation's best defensive backs, representing 10 conferences and one independent. The list is compiled by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame based on previous performance and preseason All-America lists. Kaniho returns in 2021 for a fifth year with the Broncos. In his career, he has registered 165 tackles, including 22.5 tackles-for-loss (five s acks), five interceptions, 26 pass break-ups, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. - Lewiston Tribune

Boise State's Kekaula Kaniho, John Ojukwu, Khalil Shakir and Jake Stetz were named to the 2021 Preseason All-Mountain West Football Team, the conference announced, Thursday. Kaniho returns for a fifth year with the Broncos. In his career, he has register ed 165 tackles, including 22.5 TFL (five sacks), five interceptions, 26 pass breakups, three forced rumbles and three fumble recoveries. The defensive back has scored a touchdown on a punt return and an interception return in his career. He is two-time A ll-Mountain West performer, including a first-team honoree in 2019, and is on the Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List in 2021.
