K.D. Nixon, Southern California, Player News

For the past several years, Nixon and quarterback Sam Noyer were key players and leaders for the Colorado Buffaloes. Now, they will be trying to beat the Buffs, and their new teams are happy to have them on board. Nixon transferred to USC last winter, while Noyer, who started all six games for CU in 2020, transferred to Oregon State in June. Both are in their final season of eligibility. Nixon ranks 19th in CU history in career catches (99) and receiving yards (1,221). He added five catches for 39 yards in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Dec. 26, his final game as a Buff. (CU doesn't count bowl stats in career totals).

At USC, he joins a receiver group that is led by Drake London and Bru McCoy. Nixon is the only senior receiver on the team. "He brings that veteran leadership," Helton said. "Obviously he had a great experience at Colorado, very productive. That coaching staff did an amazing job with that kid, teaching him what it is to be a college football player, what it means to be a leader, and he's brought that veteran leadership to a group that's a little bit young." Helton is excited about Nixon's potential in the offense but also said the 5-foot-8, 190-pound speedster is practicing with others on kick and punt returns. "You can see (Nixon's explosiveness) on the field already in our offseason workout drills, what he brings to the table; the overall strength that he has at the position," Helton said. "Really is going to be a dynamic player for us. "We're so glad to have him. He's gonna be a productive member of our football team and I really appreciate his leadership." - Daily Camera

Former Colorado receiver KD Nixon has found a new home - and he will get a chance to beat the Buffaloes next fall. On Friday afternoon, Nixon announced that he has committed to Southern California as a graduate transfer. Nixon entered his name in the NCAA transfer portal earlier this month after four seasons with the Buffaloes. The 5-foot-8, 190-pound Nixon ranks 19th in CU history in career catches (99) and receiving yards (1,221), while adding seven touchdowns. He also had five catches for 39 yards in the Valero Alamo Bowl last month, numbers that CU doesn't count in its career totals. - Daily Camera

Colorado receiver KD Nixon is looking to play his final year of college football elsewhere. Nixon has entered the NCAA transfer portal and could play at another school as a graduate transfer next fall. Although he was a senior this season, all players have been granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA because of the coronavirus pandemic. Entering the portal doesn't necessarily mean Nixon will leave CU, but it allows him to explore opportunities at other schools. Nixon, who has earned his bachelor's degree, ranks 19th in CU history in career catches (99) and receiving yards (1,221), while adding seven touchdowns. He also had five catches for 39 yards in the Valero Alamo Bowl last month, numbers that CU doesn't count in its career totals. - Daily Camera

Speaking to a crowd in Boulder's Central Park on Friday morning, KD Nixon walked over to a police officer and shook his hand. "I couldn't do that growing up. I was scared to do that," said Nixon, a young black man who grew up in DeSoto, Texas, and came to the University of Colorado to play football three years ago. Nixon and dozens of other CU athletes, coaches, administrators and community members gathered on Friday for Buffs March. An estimate of more than 500 people, including police officers, took part in the roughly mile-long walk to support the Black Lives Matter movement and protest against racial injustice in the wake of the death of George Floyd.

On May 25, Floyd, a black man from Minneapolis, died after being restrained by police. Floyd pleaded with officers that he couldn't breathe as they held him to the ground and one officer, Derek Chauvin, pressed his knee into Floyd's neck for 8 minutes, 46 seconds. Those who participated in Friday's Buffs March, took a knee for 8:46, remaining silent throughout with fists raised, at the end of the walk. "It's a blessing," Nixon said of seeing so many people take part in the protest. "This is authentic. This ain't nobody trying to, you know, bring racism against people. No, this is everyone versus police brutality. This is everyone standing together saying, 'Let's be stronger." - Daily Camera

Three years ago, KD Nixon and Laviska Shenault came to Boulder with visions of dominating together and they've posted some big numbers. During the past two seasons with the Colorado Buffaloes, the duo from DeSoto, Texas, has combined for 229 catches, 2,876 yards and 17 touchdowns. It's also been rare to see one on campus without the other. That will change this year, however, with Shenault in the NFL and Nixon playing his senior season at CU. This will be a much different unit without Shenault and Tony Brown, who each had 56 catches to lead CU last season. Shenault was a second round choice of the Jacksonville Jaguars last week, while Brown signed a free agent deal with the Cleveland Browns.

Nixon, meanwhile, is eager to fill their shoes and lead the Buffs' receiving corps. "Our No. 1 goal was always to be the best receivers in the nation, both of us," Nixon said this winter of he and Shenault. "Also our goal was to take care of our family (by reaching the NFL). He's at an advantage right now and he's leading the way." They've shifted their goals a bit this year. "He takes off in the NFL and I take off in college," Nixon said. "I'd be the best receiver in college football, he'd be the best receiver in the NFL. That's just our goals. We're not slowing down just because we're not together. No, let's take it up another notch." Nixon, without question, wants to take his game up a notch. After a very good sophomore season in 2018 (52 catches for 636 yards), he didn't produce as he had hoped last year. The 5-foot-8, 185-pound Nixon, who is the Buffs' lone senior receiver this year, had just 35 catches for 465 yards in 2019. Only 170 of those yards came in the last eight games. - Daily Camera

Colorado junior wide receiver K.D. Nixon has announced that he will forego his final season of eligibility and declare for the 2020 NFL Draft. Nixon was presented with CU's Eddie Crowder Award at Sunday's end of season banquet for outstanding team leadership and finishes his career in the top 25 in CU history in receptions and receiving yards, mostly amassed in his sophomore and junior seasons. "K.D. Nixon has been a tremendous, productive and versatile Colorado Buffalo," CU coach Mel Tucker said. "He's a solid contributor that we'd love to have back for his final year, but I'm excited about his professional football future. We're thankful for his hard-working attitude, his leadership on and off the field and how he's embraced our relentless culture. I look forward to seeing him excel as an NFL player. Once a Buff, always a Buff."

Nixon played in 35 career games and started 20 and ends his CU career with 90 receptions for 1,118 yards and seven touchdowns. He ranks 25th in CU history in both receptions and receiving yards. He also had 16 rushes for 30 yards and one touchdown, 43 kickoff returns for 770 yards and three punt returns for nine yards. In all, he amassed 1,148 yards from scrimmage, 1,927 all-purpose yards and nine touchdowns. He completed his only career passing attempt, a 38-yard touchdown to Dimitri Stanley. As a freshman, he also amassed 22 special teams points, second-most on the team and led the team with seven forced fair catches and seven times was first downfield. - Colorado Football
