Jack Coan, Notre Dame, Player News

  11/27/21 - QB Jack CoanrSr/2022, Notre Dame, 6-3, 218 (DS#7 QB) + More +

Jack Coan threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score and No. 5 Notre Dame finished off the regular season with a 45-14 victory over Stanford on Saturday to keep its playoff hopes alive. The Fighting Irish (11-1, No. 6 CFP) won their final seven games following a home loss to Cincinnati but will likely need some help next week to get into the College Football Playoff for the third time in the past four seasons. Stanford (3-9) lost its seventh straight game to end the season following an upset of then-No. 3 Oregon for its longest losing streak and most losses in a season since a 1-11 campaign in 2006.

The Cardinal were outscored 173-46 over the final four games. This game wasn't competitive from the start as the Irish forced a three-and-out on the first possession and answered with a 74-yard drive capped by Coan's 16-yard TD pass to Braden Lenzy. Coan added another TD pass to George Takacs and the Irish built a 24-0 halftime lead. He finished 26 for 35 for 345 yards with the 1-yard TD run in the third quarter. Jonathan McGill intercepted Coan's pass on the first drive of the second half to set up a 13-yard drive capped by Austin Jones' 5-yard run. That ended Notre Dame's streak of not allowing a TD at 219:17 of game action since North Carolina scored in the fourth quarter on Oct. 30. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

  11/20/21 - QB Jack CoanrSr/2022, Notre Dame, 6-3, 218 (DS#7 QB) + More +

On a day when No. 6 Notre Dame did little wrong in a 55-0 shutout of beleaguered Georgia Tech on Saturday, coach Brian Kelly made a pitch for his team's postseason aspirations in the College Football Playoff. "It's an improving team that continues to do the little things the right way," Kelly said. Jack Coan threw for 285 yards and two touchdowns in a little more than a half and the Fighting Irish (CFP No. 8) had two defensive touchdowns for the second time this season in winning its sixth straight game since its 24-13 home loss to No. 3 Cincinnati Oct. 2. Coan, a grad transfer from Wisconsin, completed 15 of 20 passes. He had first-half touchdown strikes of 52 yards to Michael Mayer and 20 yards to Logan Diggs as the Irish took a 45-0 halftime.

Coan exited after one series in the third quarter and was replaced by true freshman Tyler Buchner, who ripped off a 68-yard run on his first play. With Coan directing the offense, and the Irish defense hounding Georgia Tech quarterback Jordan Yates all afternoon, Notre Dame improved to 10-1, reaching the 10-win level for the fifth straight season by outgaining coach Geoff Collins' Yellow Jackets (3-8) by a 514-224 yardage margin. "That's a really good football team," Collins said "We got out-reached, out-executed and out-physicalled throughout the game." The shutout was the first at Notre Dame for first-year defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman and first by the Irish since a 52-0 whitewash of South Florida on Sept. 19 of last season when the Irish reached the College Football Playoff for the second time in three seasons. The Irish have now gone three games without allowing a touchdown. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

  11/14/21 - QB Jack CoanrSr/2022, Notre Dame, 6-3, 218 (DS#7 QB) + More +

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said the No. 7 Fighting Irish had a "tough week" with more than a dozen players battling a flu bug that kept some of them out of the lineup Saturday night against Virginia. The ones able to play were more than enough. Jack Coan threw three touchdown passes and Notre Dame extended its regular-season winning streak against Atlantic Coast Conference schools to 23 games with a 28-3 victory. On a night when a 101-degree fever kept defensive end Myron Tagovalia-Amosa out of the lineup, Rylie Mills moved over from tackle and had three sacks. In their first game without star wide receiver Avery Davis, who tore an anterior cruciate ligament last week against Navy and is out for the year, Braden Lenzy and Kevin Austin both caught scoring passes. "They had a mindset with all that that this was the challenge they wanted," coach Brian Kelly said of his team.

Coan connected with Michael Mayer from 6 yards, Lenzy from 4 yards and Austin from 15 yards for the Fighting Irish (9-1, No. 9 CFP), who also stretched their road winning streak against teams from the ACC to 11 games. "Going into the week, when you lose a leader like AD, just someone who has put up a lot of good numbers, been a great player for us, it was definitely harped on to be more focused in what we do," Lenzy said. Virginia (6-4) played without quarterback Brennan Armstrong, who leads the nation in total offense with an average of 425.3 yards but did not dress after sustaining a rib injury in a loss to No. 14 BYU two weeks ago. The Cavaliers play at Pittsburgh next Saturday, with the winner gaining an upper hand in the ACC's Coastal Division race, and Mendenhall said he had no update on whether Armstrong would be available with another week. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

After getting an earful from Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly, Jack Coan delivered the big blow - a 70-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Austin at the end of the first half - and the No. 8 Fighting Irish shut down Navy's triple-option attack in a 34-6 victory Saturday. "Coach was screaming at me because it was open the play before," said Coan, a grad transfer from Wisconsin who completed 23 of 29 passes for 269 yards. "He told me to throw it there, so that's exactly what I did. I followed his plan. When you can get the ball to a guy like Kevin Austin, he can take it the distance every time." The touchdown play ended a 5-play, 95-yard scoring drive that took one minute to complete and it provided a 17-3 halftime lead for the Irish (8-1, No. 10 CFP).

It was one of six receptions for Austin, who totaled 139 yards for the game. "It's a difficult game to prepare for," Kelly said after Notre Dame's fourth straight victory of the season after its 24-13 loss Oct. 2 to No. 2 (CFP No. 6) Cincinnati, a team that Navy battled to a 27-20 home loss Oct. 23. "I'm extremely proud how the team prepared all week and the way they executed. We were detailed and focused." Kyren Williams ran for 95 yards and two scores as the Irish offense totaled 430 yards. Williams, who had a career-high 199 yards last week in a 44-34 shootout victory over North Carolina, scored on runs of 1 and 20 yards. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

Jonathan Doerer kicked a 48-yard field goal with 17 seconds remaining, capping a dramatic rally to give No. 14 Notre Dame a 32-29 victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday night. The Fighting Irish (5-1) tied it at 29 on Jack Coan's 4-yard pass to Avery Davis and a two-point conversion completion to Kevin Austin with 2:26 left. After forcing the Hokies to punt, Coan drove them 45 yards in seven plays, and Doerer split the uprights, sparing the Fighting Irish a second straight loss.

The Hokies (3-2) had taken command with an interception return for a touchdown by Jermaine Waller and another touchdown drive started by an interception and finished with a 19-yard run by Braxton Burmeister with 3:55 to play, but Coan returned after playing just the first quarter to lead the comeback. Freshman Tyler Buchner ran for a touchdown and threw for another for Notre Dame (4-2) after replacing Coan to start the second quarter, but his two second half interceptions both turned into Virginia Tech touchdowns. Kyren Williams ran for 81 yards and one touchdown and caught an 8-yard pass from Buchner for another score the Irish. Raheem Blackshear also ran for a touchdown for the Hokies and John Parker Romo kicked three field goals. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

Jack Coan has played in only two games for No. 8 Notre Dame, yet he already has a place in Fighting Irish lore by leading them to a come-from-behind 32-29 victory over Toledo on Saturday despite dislocating a finger. The grad transfer from Wisconsin, after having the finger on his throwing hand popped back into place by a trainer, hit Michael Mayer with the game-winning 18-yard touchdown pass with 1:09 remaining for the third lead change in a wild fourth quarter. The comeback by Brian Kelly's Irish (2-0) preserved Notre Dame's home winning streak at 25 games. "I thought Jack was poised in the pocket and decisive with his throws," Kelly said. "During a break (at 1:13), our assistant trainer Mike Bean went out there and performed a pull-the-finger thing. He got it back in place. Jack stepped up and felt he could keep going. On that last drive he was outstanding." Coan, who threw for 366 yards and four touchdowns in Notre Dame's season-opening 41-38 overtime victory at Florida State last Sunday, shared playing time with true freshman Tyler Buchner.

Coan finished with 239 yards and two touchdowns but was sacked six times, threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown and fumbled the ball on another possession. "Hats off to Toledo - Jason and his staff did a terrific job," Kelly said of Jason Candle, coach of the Rockets (1-1). "From our perspective, we're happy with the win, but I can't even begin with the work we have to do to get better." Coan's second TD pass to Mayer came after Toledo freshman QB Dequan Finn scooted 26 yards on a bootleg run to put Toledo ahead 29-24 with 1:35 remaining. Finn split playing time with sophomore Carter Bradley, who threw for 213 yards. The winning drive took just 26 seconds to go 75 yards on three plays and was aided by two Toledo penalties. Buchner rushed for 68 yards on seven carries and was 3-for-3 passing for 78 yards, including a 55-yard TD pass to Chris Tyree that gave the Irish a 24-16 lead with 10:57 to play. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

  08/14/21 - QB Jack CoanrSr/2022, Notre Dame, 6-3, 218 (DS#7 QB) + More +

Wisconsin transfer Jack Coan is Notre Dame's starting quarterback. Fighting Irish coach Brian Kelly announced the choice Saturday in a Twitter post after suggesting for the last week that a decision would be coming soon. Notre Dame opens Sept. 5 at Florida State. Coan started for Wisconsin in 2019, leading the Badgers to the Big Ten title game. He completed 70% of his passes and threw for 2,727 yards and 18 touchdowns two seasons ago. Coan broke his foot before last season's abbreviated Big Ten schedule began in late October and did not play, losing the starting job to former blue-chip recruit Graham Mertz. Coan transferred in the offseason to Notre Dame, where the Irish were looking to replace long-time starter Ian Book, who was drafted in the fourth round by New Orleans. - AP College Football

The Wisconsin grad transfer won't be able to escape comparisons to the starting quarterback who came before him at Notre Dame, Ian Book, or the freshman quarterback who has been pitched as the next big thing for the Irish, Tyler Buchner. Fair or not, Coan's Notre Dame legacy will be measured by how he bridges the gap between those two quarterbacks. Coan can fortify his own path if he brings something to the Notre Dame offense that Book didn't as the winningest quarterback in program history. Coan had moments as a Wisconsin starter in 2019 that showed he could make plays with his arm and be a steady hand in winning games. Can he be decisive in the Irish offense, make the right decisions in the red zone and help stretch the field? If Coan can't meet those needs, the Notre Dame fan base will once again be pining to see what's next behind Coan whether Kelly's ready to make that decision or not. - Indianapolis Star/News

Rees said Wisconsin grad transfer Jack Coan and sophomore Drew Pyne have both been taking the majority of their reps with Notre Dame's No. 1 offense as they split the work evenly. The 6-3, 220-pound Coan has impressed Rees with his combination of arm strength and accuracy. "The thing that's shown up over and over is his ability to stay calm in the pocket and see things downfield, stay in there, deliver some critical throws, whether it be a third-down situation or an opportunity for a play-action shot," Rees said. "He's done a really nice job there." - Indianapolis Star/News

Former Wisconsin quarterback Jack Coan says he's transferring to Notre Dame. Coan posted a tweet Monday night that included the Notre Dame logo along with the message, "Extremely thankful for the opportunity. Let's get to work! @NDFootball." Wisconsin disclosed two weeks ago that Coan had entered the transfer portal. Notre Dame and Wisconsin are scheduled to face each other on Sept. 25 at Chicago's Soldier Field.

Notre Dame's 2021 roster was lacking a proven quarterback. The Fighting Irish need to replace three-year starter Ian Book, whose college career ended Friday with a 31-14 loss to Alabama in a College Football Playoff semifinal. Coan made 18 starts for Wisconsin from 2018-19 but injured his right foot in preseason practice this year and underwent surgery. The 6-foot-3 senior from Sayville, New York, suited up for Wisconsin's final three regular-season games but didn't play.   Jack Coan has played his final game for Wisconsin. Coan, a senior who suffered a right foot injury during camp and has not played this season, has entered the NCAA's transfer portal. Coan passed for 2,727 yards, with 18 touchdowns and only five interceptions, in 14 games last season and was slated to be the starter in 2020 until suffering the injury on Oct. 3. He underwent surgery Oct. 7 and was in uniform for the first time Dec. 5 against Indiana. He did not play in UW's 14-6 loss to the Hoosiers or in the 28-7 loss to Iowa on Dec. 12. UW turned to Chase Wolf on Saturday against Minnesota after starter Graham Mertz left in the third quarter after suffering an apparent head injury. Coan's final game at UW was the 2020 Rose Bowl. He completed 23 of 35 attempts for 186 yards, with one touchdown and one interception, in a 28-27 loss to Oregon. Coan has started 18 games and played in 25 for UW. - Journal Sentinel

Wisconsin could have all its quarterbacks available Saturday for duty for the first time this season. According to a source, Jack Coan, who suffered a right foot injury on Oct. 3 and underwent surgery four days later, has returned to practice and has been cleared to play if needed. UW's scheduled game last week against Minnesota was called off because of rising coronavirus numbers in the Gophers' program. The extra practice time was beneficial for Coan, who last played in the 2020 Rose Bowl against Oregon. Head coach Paul Chryst said recently Coan was progressing toward his return. "He means a ton to this team," Chryst said. - Journal Sentinel

Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said Monday it is too early to tell how much time quarterback Jack Coan might miss after the senior injured his foot in practice Saturday. "He's going to see a specialist," Chryst said. "We'll know more in the coming days on that one there. We'll find out what all that means." The 16th-ranked Badgers open the season Oct. 24 by hosting Illinois. Chryst said the injury occurred when Coan was dropping back and that it didn't involve any contact. Redshirt freshman Graham Mertz has been receiving the first-team reps that Coan didn't take. Coan has made 18 career starts and started all 14 games for Wisconsin last year as the Badgers went 10-4 with losses in the Big Ten championship game and Rose Bowl. He had a school-record 236 completions for 2,727 yards with 18 touchdowns and five interceptions last season.   Wisconsin quarterback Jack Coan is dealing with a foot injury as the Badgers prepare for the start of their coronavirus pandemic-delayed season. Athletic department spokesman Brian Mason confirmed that Coan injured his foot in practice Saturday and didn't practice Sunday. Mason didn't have any update on the severity of Coan's injury beyond that. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel first reported Coan's injury and said the senior from Sayville, New York, is out indefinitely. The 16th-ranked Badgers open their season Oct. 24 by hosting Illinois. Coan has made 18 career starts and started all 14 games for Wisconsin last year as the Badgers went 10-4 with losses in the Big Ten championship game and Rose Bowl.   Coan was effective in 2019 in his first full season as a starter, but he also wasn't the focal point of the offense with Jonathan Taylor in the backfield. With Taylor gone, the Badgers could rely on Coan's arm more in 2020. He completed 69.6 percent of his passes last year - good for third in program history - while throwing for 2,727 yards, 18 touchdowns and five interceptions for the Big Ten West champion Badgers. The former three-star prospect isn't the most athletic quarterback, but at 6-foot-3, he can be an effective short-yardage runner near the goal line, rushing for four scores in 2019. But while Coan is the incumbent starter, redshirt freshman Graham Mertz could push him for playing time this season. - Ann Arbor News

There was no formal announcement on Sunday when Jack Coan was named starter at quarterback for 19th-ranked Wisconsin, which opens the season Friday at South Florida. The news came as no surprise, since Coan took the first-team reps in fall camp, ahead of Chase Wolf and highly touted freshman Graham Mertz. The two were co-listed as backups on the depth chart, with Danny Vanden Boom rounding out the group. "There was never really the talk or anything, it's just when the ones go out, I go out," Coan said. "Ever since I got here, I view myself as the starter and put myself in the starter shoes, so I don't think that anything is going to change."

Coan is the only quarterback with significant experience following the departure of three-year starter Alex Hornibrook, who transferred to Florida State in March. Coan, a junior, played in five games last year, starting the last four when Hornibrook was out with a concussion, and threw for 515 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. He led the Badgers to a 35-3 victory over Miami in the Pinstripe Bowl. - AP College Football
